Title: What version of Soul Calibur II is the best?

What version of Soul Calibur II is the best?

You heard me. I'm partial to Link, but more interested in the almighty framerate and controls.

I've seen the crew here is both honest and up front, so I'm trusting what I read here more and more. We can love our GC's without hyping them.

The GC version is first, in my opinion.  It's not fanboyism, either.

Link isn't all that great, really...once you get over the "cool" factor, you realize he's nothing special.

So yeah, go with the 'Cube version if you have it.  Best out of all of them, though they all have their own strengths.

The GC and Xbox versions' framerates are better then the PS2's...

After that, it all depends on your favorite exclusive character and which controller you are most comfortable with...

If you're uncomfortable with the Cube controller, do yourself a favor and get one of Hori's digital pads... they're EXCELLENT with this game.

This is one of the few games where i prefer using the GCN controller, it just feels so right. I would definately recommend the GCN version over the Xbox and PS2 versions. The PS2 version is the worst, and has a terrible exclusive character. The Xbox version has Spawn, meh, and pretty much looks the same as the GCN version. I like the GCN version the best because i am more comfortable with the controls, the framerate is steady, and Link kicks ass.

All three systems are basicaly the same, graphics wise. If you simply must have the best frame rate, go with Xbox or something. I spose it pushes 0.00003 more frames a second. Plus you get the out of place Spawn character. *Thumbs up*

just go with what ever controll you feel more comfy with, personally i have the GCN version (as i do with most multiplatform games) but going by IGN's comparison they are pretty much equal, their final coment was 'pick the one with the easiest controll for you'

He's still not all that great.  He's cheap, that's for sure - only ranged attacks, uber-powerful moves that are almost un-blockable...

I use Raphael the most.  He's awesome, especially with the Queen's sword.

Link is annoying. I played against a total newbie. I totally owned him until he used Link. Then it was just 2:1 (ratio) for me. Link has projectile attacks, those shouldnt have been in the game (since no other character has any). If you play with friends for some time Link will be banned pretty soon.
If you want range, try learning Ivy. She's the second most annoying character in the game. For me, Cervantes worked out the best, but Nightmare comes close.
BTW, if you want to play the "evil" characters, leave the speech English, their japanese voices sound awful.

The GC controls are no problem, you should reconfigure them, though. I used B - B, A - K, X - A, Y - A+B. L&R should be guard. The worst aspects of the controls are the guard button and 8-way run. The former should have been replaced with pressing back/nothing and the latter with the shoulder buttons controlling sidesteps. It's really annoying when you want to dodge and your character ducks because you didn't release guard fast enough.

What I really would like to see would be Link vs. Spawn. (Screw that Teckken guy!)

solution, smash your gcn into an xbox repeatedly untill the friction causes them to fuse togeather, then place both the gcn version and xbox version of soul calibur 2 in the microwave, cook on medium-low for 43 seconds, insert violently into the gamecube-xbox hybrid and enjoy.

I would have to go with the X-Box. The controller (the S controller) is so great for the game, kinda reminds of the Dreamcast controller (which I love). Since I don't care for any of the extra characters for any of the system its not a deciding factor.

You're um... posting on a Gamecube message board section of a gamecube website.... what do you think the answer would be?

having purchased the gamecube version and playing it nearly nonstop for about two weeks straight, i became very comfortable with the Cube controller... it's easier to do A+B, A+K, and even B+K (for me)

i've played the ps2 version, as well, but the controls suck (in my opinion)

There are a couple places on the PS2 version that chop, HARD.  The differences between the GC and Xbox vers (other than exclusive character) are pretty negligable. If you have both of those, though, consider whether or not it'd be handy to have the save data portable (scratch that if you have a memory card for Xbox but I don't think a whole lotta people do). I prefer the XBox controller to GC for SC2, but I prefer my XArcade (that I use on all three systems) to anything, olol.

It might just be my TV, but with standard video connections, the GC one looks just a smidge 'blurrier' (the bad kind) on the character select screen. I don't know if you can really see it during matches, but I kinda doubt it.

Um, you CAN setup autoguard in all Soul Edge console games (which is the same as the Tekken "press back or neutral guard" setup).  Just hit start, go to options, and it's right there...

As for the controls, I prefer the default Dreamcast setup or Arcade, so the closest was DC for GCN, and works beautifully:

A button= Guard
B button= A
Y button= B
X button= K
L trigger= Guard
R trigger= Guard

And you can use the C-stick for your choice of button combos (A+B, A+K, B+K, A+B+K and C-up, C-left, C-right, and C-down respectively).  The only problem is (like any console version) you'll HAVE TO reach from guard to another button together to grab.  B and A are easiest to press natively, while Y and X are hardest to combine with A.  But this is why L and R are guard, also.

And to stay on-topic, SCII GCN is the best version, IMO.  720p and Spawn isn't enough to save it from almost sterile graphics (too clean).

A lot of people say the Gamecube version is the best, I’m guessing it's true.

I have found this forum to be full of relatively honest fans of GameCubes.

This is great news as I love Link, my kids love SC and have a GC ... and Hori's digital can perhaps save me on the controls.

Thanks everyone!
