One simple number to blame for this: 20500.

The United States is joining Canada in the group of North American countries who will see price increases due to "market conditions", or tariffs.

Nintendo of America issued a statement today that a "price update" would go into effect on Sunday, August 3 for Switch hardware, certain Switch accessories (called out twice), Amiibo, and the Alarmo clock. Nintendo Switch Online membership and game prices, as well as all Switch 2-related pricing, will remain as is.

A similar adjustment has gone into effect in Canada today, with the following changes:

So I was fearing Switch 2-style $100 CAD games so "only" 5 bucks isn't so bad.  Still it looks so ridiculous on the eShop to see first party Nintendo games that are years old now charging $85.  Ignore the price increases for new games, why the hell are games from 2017 having a price increase?  Nintendo should have lower prices for their older games to begin with and having this increase just emphasizes how ridiculous that is.

So did Switch 2 MSRP not change?

With the prices of consoles everywhere else going up due to inflation, I guess it was a matter of time before they couldn't hold out in the US any longer. But it still leaves a bad taste for an old console to go up in price. The least they could do is raise the price $50 but then give back $50 in eshop credit.

No. This is specifically for Switch 1 pricing.

Despite Switch 2 currently cleaning up, it would be a colossally terrible idea to raise prices less than two months after launch. Even that pre-launch accessories price hike was pushing it. Nintendo is still in the user acquisition phase with people balking at the price yet buying the console anyway. I suspect it will push back a Switch 2 price increase for as long as possible though one is inevitable. I predict sometime in 2027.

I'd be interested in snagging a Switch OLED Model down the line just to have one with the Mariko chip that can be overclocked. That will have to wait until it's on clearance pricing. I have a launch Fusée Gelée Switch so I can mod that for now. I should replace the battery anyway.
