Title: GameCube on a 16:9 Screen?
Post by: SLIVER on December 06, 2003, 03:14:34 AM
How would a Gamecube look on a widescreen t.v. with the reguler cables?
Would the Image be disorted? Blurry? \
Would it Stretch the image making it messed up?

it looks fine, i played most of metroid prime streched to fit 16:9 format and you don't even notice it, having said that games with a wide screen option (f-zero gx, soul calibur 2) look much better like that, but forced 16:9 looks fine.

I have a 51 inch widescreen, and have my cube hooked up via s-video cable, and it looks real good. You will get the best picture using 4x3 mode for games that dont have a widescreen option, however I dont recommend this due to burn in issues.
My TV has four differant types of stretch mode and I am sure most newer models do as well, so try the differant modes and pick the one that is the most appealing to YOUR eyes. In all honesty, they all look good, and any stretching usually only occurs at the edges.
Good luck.

"Having sex when your 90 is like shooting pool with a piece of rope"

Umm...I think thats too much information buddy.  Old people+and bendy ropes=NOT GOOD.

I know this isn't going to answer your question, but if you have what ammounts to atleast an EDTV why don't you shell out the extra 30 dollars and get the component cable?

Ook, how can you stand stretching for a widescreen? The one in our car is technically widescreen (althouh its only like 7 inches) and when I play some dvds that are 4:3 only it is painfully clear.

that's how, it's barely noticeable that everything is slightly fatter, a 7inch car screen isn't really compareable to a full sized  widescreen television.

But I would think on a smaller screen the distortion should be less noticable on a smaller screen.

If you have any choice, don't go with a widescreen TV. Those are the most annoying waste of money I have ever seen. 4:3 screens in the same price region have a larger picture (unless you distort it on the 16:9) and are more useful for 90% of the things the device will display (100% in my case). Games are surely playable, but the result is less than pretty.

in less that 5 years, all cable broadcast will be in 16x9.

With the new sets and their many types of stretch features games look as good if not better in widescreen.

Or you could use the wide screen function that comes with most games.  That works nicely too.

I did a whole report a few years back about hdtvs and how they would be the standard by 2006, but until prices and people can actually start buying the things I don't see adoption happening that soon.

Prices are still a bitch.  I have been hunkering down waiting for 720P and maybe even 1080P to poke their heads out the door, but not much has been shown in a while.  What is really starting to get to me is that the only thing released are the 'cheaper to produce' flat panels that have been several thousand dollars more than a regular HDTV... well good if it's cheap to produce, how about cheap to buy?
