They aren't exclusive until they ship. So far we haven't missed much.
And you'll never see a Donkey Kong game on XBox

Yeah, so far the only Rare game on Xbox has been Grab by the Ghoulies, which I must say, sucks big time. Hopefully this won't be a preview of what's in store for Perfect Dark Zero.

Well, Nintendo has their reasons. I'm guessing one reason is they make their games too slow. Nintendo just had their reasons that they didn't need them. I don't care much though, as the cube has lots of great games. I used to be mad that Rare was put up for sale and bought but now im sure that other games on the cube wont match rares games like Perfect Dark Zero VS Metroid Prime, Cameo: Elements of Power VS Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles(?), Banjo Threeie VS (umm...you think of one lol). Their only XBox game, Grabbed By the Ghoulies, didn't do well.

Its Kameo, not Cameo
and the next Banjo game isnt going to be called Banjo Sqeaul, there is no official name yet (lolol)
and Nintendo can make a Donkey Kong, they dont need Rare to do that.

ARG! What is up with people thinking Rare owns the rights to the Donkey Kong label!? It's so irritating!

There was also that nasty fine for price fixing in Europe. I believe Rare's sale kept Nintendo from having a quarter in the red as well.

Heh. I gotta check out that Banjo Squeal game when it comes out. It sounds hilarious. The others sound like they either suck or won't be on Xbox.

People think that they got the Star Fox lisence too.
Hur hur hur.
Anyway, about every single original Rare employee that was there originally is gone. The Rare magic just might not be there anymore...

Exactly. But, then again, it was Rare's first game, and I'm sure by the time they release another Xbox game, it'll be better because they'll know how to use the Xbox's hardware. But yeah, the games Cube has now instead of Rare's seem to be better. Especially Final Fantasy.

Probably because of that idiotic Grabbed by the ghoulies commercial in which it states proudly "From the makers of Donkey kong country!"

Sadly, GbtG's doom came from diluted gameplay, which isn't something that could be excused for because of the sale... Even I, a Rare fanatic, have to say that Rare is heading towards the "graphics over gameplay" path that I feared would occur...

Nintendo got alot of cash for a development house that had been on a downward spiral for quite a while. I cant say I am glad that they are gone, but I am not devistated either.

Nintendo bought Square?
Title: RE:Why was RARE sold to microsoft?
Post by: Bill Aurion on December 02, 2003, 05:20:04 PM
The money to get games from Square came from the Q fund, which was completely out of former Ninty pres Yamauchi's pocket...Some of the money from the Rare deal was put into that fine Ninty got in Europe, as well as funded(I'm sure) the development of some Ninty-exclusive titles...

Ah ah ah!...*waves finger at Mario*
The Square deal isn't a one-game shot...I'm absolutely positive on that...

Do you mean artifacts? I think collecting the artifacts was fun. You could get them in any order, at your own pace.

ill answer this question with a question... here it goes... would u want a developer who takes too much time and money and their games doesn't guarntee that it would make the money back??? more money input for a less money output, is it wise to gamble???

people think Rare owns DK because MS is advertising GBTG as the game made by the same folks as DKC. It says it in the commercial. They couldn't say Perfect Dark, Banjo Kazooie, Conker, Battle Toads, or Killer Instinct; they just had to say Donkey Kong which they don't even own.
Title: RE: Why was RARE sold to microsoft?

It was kind of to rub it in. (Which I think ended up backfiring.) The reason why Xbox owners were happy to get Rare was Perfect Dark. They thought they were getting a company that made "mature" games. What they didn't realize that 90% of the games they make have a very friendly feel to them.

Actually people have been thinking that Rare owns Donkey Kong and Star Fox way before that commercial.

yeah i dont really care that much about RARE being sold to MS cause i think the cube is just as good, The game only game i really wanted to see on the cube was a Banjo game as i loved Banjo-kazooie and Banjo-tooie on the N64.

Rare was sold because 1. Inefficieny. I know this is rich coming from Nintendo, but Rare was gradually getting slower and slower at releasing their games, considering their size and talent. There was a huge gap between Conker and SFA, which were the last two projects from Rare, and I think Nintendo had had enough. 2. Talent. Rare wasn't quite the team it was during its peak (Goldeneye/BK days) as most of the team had moved on to other projects and companies.
Overall, I think it was a smart move. Compare the output of Retro Studios and Silicon Knights, which are both second parties of Nintendo, to that of Rare now that it has moved to the Microsoft Game Developers place, and its evident that Nintendo won in the short term. But the real winner won't be obvious until the next generation of consoles is released- around this time I think Rare will be alot more efficient with its funding and support from MS, so it will be interesting.

Well Rare were golden in my eyes they single handedly save are 64 from complete annihilation in US and Eourpe for that and the brilliant gameplay experiences that nintendo never filled (mature games) i thank them for that.
They got a great name too. Rare. ; your dame right
GBTG that bagobon that fell off the face of the earth-ha

Funny that you mention their mature titles, because my two favorite games from Rare aren't the "mature" ones...Banjo Kazooie and Donkey Kong Country are 2 of the best games ever made, imo...

Killer Instinct on the SNES and PD 64 are my fav Rare games, but I don't like'm cos their deemed "Muture" "bloody" or "violent" i just made that reference because those were the gaps that they were filling to make 64 more successful, i like them cos i found them the most enjoyable, linking a 19hit combo with chief-Thunder's ultra ohh the bliss, theres nothing like it.
Mostly all of Rares games are Nintendo classics anyway.

Mario how can you say that? I am still kind of surprised that Square even made FFTA for GBA, I mean they could have made it for PSone and release it just the same as they did with Final Fantasy Origins. At least we got it.

not quite. the graphics were good. it was the gameplay that was lagging. and you can't blame that on the change of hardware. same goes for starfox adventures, as long as we're on the subject.

Rare was sold because they did not provide a launch game for the Gamecube and Conler sold very poorly
If they would have made a game for launch that people would have wanted then Rare would still be with nintendo in my opinion.
all the company has made in the past 3 years is conker, star fox, and grabbed which were all okay games but not stellar(Conker is the best of the bunch)

I was also very impressed with Retro Studio's, their first game being Metroid Prime, and it lives up to the hype. Silikon Knights may not have gotten the props it deserves for Eternal Darkness, but there time will come. Probably when they release Metal Gear Solid. That game looks like its really shaping up to be a sweet game. Conker was a cool game, but it wasnt anything new. If it had been released early on in the N64's lifespan, I think it would have had a much bigger impact. Rare was really good at making gorgeous games, but havent made a really awsome game in years.

I find that halariously funny since while metroid prime was in developement people were saying give it to Rare. Retro studios sucks, they don't know what their dooing. Its funny how people's view changes so easily.
