Title: Master and Coomander...
Post by: Oldskool on November 30, 2003, 12:10:05 AM
Wow, this was one heck of a suprise. I was going excepting "Pirates of the Carribean" with Russel Crowe. (Not a good combo in my mind) What I got was a gripping navel epic. Brillient acting, excellent diologe, (I can't believe Americans thought the movie was bad because of the dialects.) jaw-droppingly brutal navel battles (and a incredible storm that puts The Perfect Storm to shame), all makes an excellent movie. Wow. Soembody deserves an Oscar for this.
(Sorry about my spelling, I am tired this morning)

Oh, good. I almost thought this was about that "renaming Master and Slave IDE devices"-issue.

Master and commander is getting great reviews in the U.S. , so i dont know who is complaining . I'm seeing it next weekend.
You want some truly brutal accents, watch 'Lock, stock and two smoking barrels'. To make matters worse, its mixed poorly. I like the movie though.

i liked it, but the ending was disapointing....and it seemed to be missing something....i dont know what. it was ok, but not great in my opinion.

Yeah, one of my few complaints about the movie is that the ending SREAMS "Oh, a sequal is coming".
I haven't seen any major reviews complaining about the accents, but I have seen people on message boards saying "Why are they playing baseball on the island" (It is cricket!!!) and "This movie had bad accents, it sucked", you just feel like going up and telling these people to learn about other cultures. (Especially if there gonna be the "World's policeman", and they can't find Iraq on the map.)

well the ending seemed like it was going to go in another direction but then stopped? Was the doctor the real captain? I got confused and then it ended. Good movie though...with good humor.
And the dialect a problem? Na me and me mates spoke in quite a different sort when we left jokingly.

The ending was a big let down. Felt like syphon filter all over.

I haven't seen this as of yet, having been on a family vacation with young folk. But Elf is much better than I expected it to be, if that helps. . .

I'm going to see Master and COmmander - I have no idea why ANYONE would complain about ANY movie because of the accents in it. We are forced to watch american movies all the time () so why can't some americans watch a movie from some other place now? I don't know if Master and Commander is a Hollywood film, but Peter Weir is an Aussie guy and Russ is an Aussie, so it's an 'Aussie' movie to me
Lock Stock is a great movie, but I think Snatch is a killer. Brad Pitt, Jason Statham and Vinnie Jones are total hoots (as are the black dudes) .

I like both Lock, stock. and Snatch. But all i was saying about accents was i couldn't understand them, literally. I wasnt saying they should somehow conform to my New Jersey dialect.

The open ending might not mean a sequel. The movie is based off a book, so it might just be right from the book. (I don't know because I haven't read it). Anyways, I thought the movie was great. Best cannonball combat ever. Yay realism!!

Really, I haven't heard ANY complaints about accents. Honestly, the more British accents the better - can't get enough of 'em! Wish I had one.. alas.

I've heard that (since Master and Commander is a 20 book series) they are making 19 more of them!

HOLY CRAP.......19 more.....!
James Bond anyone I doubt it would be THAT popular to warrent 19 sequels

Well, it would allow them to expound on the somewhat abrupt ending. I'm all for that.

Snatch is an awesome movie. Very cool indeed.
If they made 19 more movies. . . I'd see only the fifteenth, but utterly confused, and mainly just spend my time eating popcorn. And Junior Mints.

Oh. Dear. Lord. JUNIOR MINTS! I love those things with a passion surpassed only by that of Nintendo and Lord of the Rings. *eats a whole friggin box of jr. mints, plays Nintendo, and reads LOTR* *is happy*

I haven't seen Master and Comander, but I have seen elf and it is pretty good...it would have been better if they released it closer to Christmas.

Hmm, I didn't mention seeing Looney Tunes, it seems. That was even better than Elf, in my opinion. Quite good.

Loony Toons??! Loony Tunes?! How can Loony Tunes be better than anything? It looked pretty stupid to me on the commercials. Was it pretty good? Or ReAlLy bad?

Looney Toons was better than I expected it to be (and I didn't expect it to be too bad). . . classic Looney Toon humor, plus some extra stuff. I enjoyed it; whether you would is another matter.

I was just wondering because it looked stupid that's all. *shrugs*
Edit: It might be good, it just looks like it would be stupid from watching the commercials.

Not to spoil anyone's party here. But I didn't enjoy it that much.
I thought the accents were a bit strong, especially if they plan to market to the American audience. Also, I found myself not really getting into any of the characters, except, obviously Capt. Aubrey and Dr. Maturin. None of the characters really pulled the sympathy out of me like other movies. (I'll just say this up front, I was expecting a Gladiator-esque movie on the seas.)

Now I'm even more confused! I have no idea whether I should watch it or not.
