Title: GAMECUBE IS TEH KIDDIEE!!!!!
Post by: Grey Ninja on November 16, 2003, 08:39:48 AM
I just bought a GameBoy Player yesterday. I already had a GBA, but the temptation of playing GBA games on a big screen was just too great. But there's a thought that's been constantly nagging me as I have bought more and more games for both consoles. I am 22 years old, and I have been playing video games since I got my NES at 7 years old. I've practically made them my life.
The thing is that GameCube seems to have many of the games that I played in my childhood, and the best of the games from previous consoles such as N64, and Dreamcast. I have NES games via the GBA, Animal Crossing, and the occasional bonus disc. I have SNES games from the GBA, and most of the best is accounted for. The thing is that GameCube seems to be oriented completely toward the older nostalgic gamer. GameCube not only has lots of new games to keep me amused, but it also has the best of the old stuff. I mean, if I seriously went out and bought all the games I wanted on GameCube and GBA, I would have no money left, but I would no longer have any sort of need for my NES, SNES, or N64. As it is, I no longer have any desire for a Dreamcast, and I haven't touched my N64 in ages.
Does anyone else see this as I do? I mean, I bought the GBA player because I knew I would want it sooner or later to play some of the classic games, such as Breath of Fire 2, Phantasy Star Collection, Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga (ok, maybe that's not so classic. ), and I know that sooner or later I will feel compelled to buy this. I mean, to me the GameCube has done the impossible and surpassed even the almighty SNES in terms of quality. I once commented on the possibility of this happening, but given my fondness for the SNES, I never thought it would actually happen.
You might be wondering about my thread title? Well, I just wanted to attract the audience I was going for. If any mods disagree with it, I would be happy to change it.

I agree entirely, man. Yesterday I was bored and decided to bust out Wind Waker, since I had started a new game back in August but haven't made much progress on it. I completely forgot how much fun the game is! I mean, I've beaten the game once already, and I've played through Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask innumerous times, but I was completely blown away at the amount of fun I was having just chopping up Deku Babas. A lot of people claim Nintendo is just rehashing everything from their older days, but I think it's more that Nintendo knows what makes a good game. I guess people who aren't Nintendo fans are used to sorting through all the crap to find the rare gem of a game, whereas with Nintendo, almost every game is that (not so) rare gem. Nintendo knows what the NES and SNES eras the golden age of videogames, and you constantly see that knowledge cropping up in their games. I don't know if anybody else felt the same way I did, but I was thoroughly confused when Nintendo said they were getting back to the basics, getting back to what made games fun. How can you "get back" to something you never left in the first place? Nintendo takes a lot of flack for not conforming to the industry, but I wouldn't conform, either, when what I'd be conforming to is largely made up of hype, image, and crap. I know this is entirely on subject, but it's something I wanted to say.

Ya I agree, I love the classics but i like them even more on the cube. I grew up playing them on the nes and super nes. But I also like the new ones like Metroid prime and Wind Waker.

Mouse_clicker, it is so weird that you said that. Just today I decided to play WW again. I just wanted to beat Gannon again, but I will start another file soon. As for nastalgic gaming, Super Mario World was one of my favorite games when I was younger and I love playing it again. Jeez, now I want to do it again. I think I'm getting an SP today so that'll be cool. I missed out on ALTTP on the SNES so I liked that. I want a port of the Star Fox SNES. It looks cool.
I've never seen that controller before, GN. It makes me want a GB Player even more now.

Hey yah, I want that controller as well. If you get it let us know if you like it.
That is, if I don't get it first.
I agree about the GC being the best Nin system yet, it just has so much flexibility. And there are so many different types of games available to be played on it, with the addition of the GPB of course
BTW, anyone else have that controller here?

Hell yeah. I think all the nostalgia kicks ninty is on is definately pointing to the next console being backwards compatible. To me it looks like they are trying to create the ultimate library of games. Finally they must be realizing what the great game library is doing for the gba. Also, the gameboy player points to my (and others) theory on the convergence of the two units in the next generation. I for one would be glad to pay 300ish dollars every 5 years for a system upgrade and the potential of some better games, knowing that there is a massive library of *great* games there in my living room, and at all thsoe stores. =)
As for gameboy player, my christmas list to my parents consists of 3 great imports... the Q gameboy player, that hori controller, and warioware GC.... I hope they pull through for me. =)

Yeah, I definitely know what you mean. Nice title, too.
I'm considering buying a Gameboy player. . . I want to play Metroid Fusion and Fire Emblem (as well as several old SNES games, since I never had the pleasure of owning one, though I have played it extensively), but I don't have a GBA, nor do I currently have any intention to get one. Ah, well. We'll see.

Fire emblem is great but a big rule of thumb is never let your character get in less than 10hp range. But cube is the best it overshadows my ps2, and the cube reminds me of the good old days on the SNES and im working on to restore my NES so i can really have the good old days. Screw the negetive and kiddy cube remarks and let nintendo reinvent the good old days in terms of fun.

Speaking of nostalgia on the Gamecube, a while back someone on the board pointed out that when the second Zelda bonus disc is released, every Zelda game ever released by Nintendo will be playable on the Gamecube with a little help from the Gameboy Player. Now's a great time to be a Zelda fan.

Wow, this happened to me just a few days ago aswell. I had erased my old file when I discovered that I can't complete the Nintendo gallery after I had missed Tetra in my game+, so I started again a few months ago. The temple of the gods, which I had previously found boring, easy and uninspired I suddenly found to be atmospheric with puzzles I actually had to think about. Maybe it's because I'm playing through the game without doing the boring bits like finding all those darn fish, because I know I will only have to get them all again when I begin the game+ for the second time. Wow, I really wanted to get that of my chest.
As for the nostalgia, I missed out the 16 bit generation, so I'm having to play through those games currently. I doubt anything will ever match the sudden impulses I occasionally have to play Majora's Mask. Yet in a bought of drunken idiocy, I sold my N64 I will get that Zelda bonus disc, one way or another.

Rgh, stupid board messed up my message. Abbreviated version:
I started playing WW again a little while back. I mainly did the puzzle in the cabana (you get nothing for lighting all the lights, but it was fun to do, especially with my friend. . . "There ya go". . . hilarious"), but I also did some treasure chart stuff, and the fight on Shark Island. That is a great game.

By the end of the Gamecube's lifespan, it just might even have a better overall lineup than the SNES, imo...Not to mention the addition of the GBP...
Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Star Fox, Metal Gear, Tales, SSB, F-Zero, and countless other old and original franchises will bring me back to playing my GC for years to come... ^_^

*looks at what everyone so far has said* *nods head*
Actually, this whole thing was brought to my attention back when the GC was released and people started the whole "kiddie" garbage. The GC has all of the classics, the things adults grew up with. It was the GC that had both the young and old audience, while the Xbox had the retarded teens. Oh yeah.....my WW disc broke just when I had started my new file. Godammit.

I think its tied already. Wind Waker is better than Link to the Past which is second for favorite Zelda game on My "The List". I haven't played too many SNES games but it is a great machine. Lemme think. I played Mega Man X, Super Mario World 1 & 2... Mario Paint. Ok apparently I played even less games than I thought. NO WAIT! How could I forget Mario Kart?! Jeez!
Speaking of Mario Kart, I'm extatic because Gamestop called me today and said that because I'm so special and preordered it, I get to get it tomorrow instead of waiting til tuesday! SCORE! Good news for me, bad news for my grades. I hope I can find the time for homeword. Heh.

i'm so over mario kart, that was SO last week </onlychancetostickittoNTSCpeopleforgettingagamefirst>
agreement ++ on the topic, but i still use all my original systems, i only own mario advance 1 (aka mario 2) and i never play that, i have the super mario allstars version that and i don't like the GCN control for OoT / MQ (despite being ready to fight to get it ) put chronotrigger on GCN via any means possible, and it will rocket to #1 favorite, at the moment it's sitting at #2 behind SNES and ahead of GBA
edit: oh yeah, when i first saw the thread title, i figured you had account suicided

Crap. Once again, Ninty's advertising has made me want YET ANOTHER of their games. I should stop clicking on all these ads people are posting.... I'm already nearly BROKE.
EDIT: I should prolly mention that the above post shows how stupid I REALLY am. I was responding to PIAC's sig.

I think GameCube is pretty good, but I'm not going as far as saying it's as good as the SNES. I still think the SNES will never be topped. Not only did the SNES have awesome first-party games, but it had loads of good third-party games. In fact, I have many SNES games to get, such as Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Kirby's Superstar, Adventures of Batman and Robin, Mario Kart, and so many other games. I really wish Nintendo still went all out in making new franchises. That's the why GameCube could be so much better. The SNES launched with F-Zero, Nintendo made Star Fox, Mario Kart, they came up with Yoshi's first game Yoshi's island, Super Mario RPG, and Yoshi's Safari. They also supercharged their other franchises with superb games like Super Mario World, Super Metroid, and Link to the Past. Too bad there will never be another Golden Age of videogames.

Yes, it's just lovely. Now if only Nintendo would concentrate on creating NEW franchises instead of rehashing old ones.

I'm a sucker for nostalgia but I don't own any GBA ports. If I want to play some classics I'll turn on my SNES (I still have it hooked up) and play Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Donkey Kong Country and A Link to the Past the way they were designed to play. Plus you can't play Super Metroid any other way. Besides Nintendo ruins the GBA ports by making them easier and adding all sorts of crappy voice samples. I don't mind them adding stuff like multiplayer or new levels but they shouldn't mess with the original game content. If you don't have another option than the GBA is the way to go but the SNES versions are often superior.
So I pretty much just use my Gamecube and GBA for new games. The GBA is rather disappointing in that regard but the new stuff (Metroid Fusion, FFTA, Advance Wars) is REALLY good so that makes up for the lack of new stuff somewhat. I still want to see a new 2D Mario and since they just ported the last original Mario title they finally are going to have to make a new one. The Cube is pretty sufficient for new games though I do find that EAD's Cube output has been disappointing compared to their N64 lineup. However there's enough amazing games that the Cube is a steal at it's current price and of all the games I've bought so far Star Fox Adventures is that only one I didn't really like. In retrospect though it wasn't worth paying for the console at launch when all the really good stuff was released after the first price cut.
I think the Cube and the GBA have not lived up to their full potential but they're still systems worth owning. If I could only have one console I would go with a Gamecube with a GB Player. It's a good introduction console for new gamers since it has games from a lot of different platforms.

Incidentally, i happen to be playing Final Fantasy 3 for the first time. Its great. I've played 1 , 2 ,6 and 7, and so far, this ranks right up there with 2.
The SNES has so many games i never had a chance to play, that i could probably live with it being my only console. Right now i'd put the GC tied for 2nd with the trusty old NES, and slightly ahead of the 64. I dont have the GBA yet, but just might have to get the GBP soon.
