Title: Free Hobbit Movie(s)! Help test the media server.
Post by: Jonnyboy117 on November 07, 2003, 02:07:53 AM
Okay, let's try this again. This time, the video quality is loads better than with that Mario Kart vid, but the file size is also larger. (About 25MB.) I think I can reduce that more with some tweaking, but part of the reason is that the video is just lengthy. The only other issue with this one is that there's no sound. It has nothing to do with DivX, I just had something set wrong during capturing. There are subtitles though, and you can get an idea of the picture quality. So, here's the link:
As before, please let me know how the download goes and how the movie plays for you. I am still experimenting with the encoding bitrate. The second movie (which has sound; I fixed that issue) is at a much lower bitrate. Accordingly, the video doesn't look as good, and the file is much smaller. I think next time I will up the bitrate to somewhere in the middle of these two vids, and try compressing the sound.
Also, I realize that some of you have had problems connecting to the server. This was determined to be a DNS problem. Some changes were made, but due to the nature of DNS, it will take a while for the fixes to propogate out across the Internet. If it worked, everyone should be able to download the movies by Sunday night or Monday. Let me know if you still have trouble on Monday.

Blargh, the link isn't working for me, and I don't know why. The file IS on the media server, but it doesn't seem to be accessible for some reason. I'll keep working on it today. If anyone is able to download it, let me know.

Compared to the Mario Kart vid when you first posted that, this one is going a lot faster. Thanx!!

Blasted machines and their lack of file serving potency!

I tried today twice(noon and now evening) and it still doesn't want to download. I've tried when I'm logged in and when logged out but nothing came to my harddrive, except an error on the screen("A connection with the server could not be established").

I nabbed it first try at about 160k/s
Could this have something to do with how many connections it is allowing at one time? Say so many people are dling it at once, it will then just appear invisible to others? Just a thought.

I seriously doubt it Pale Zero. There aren't THAT many forum readers here. And no, it don't work for me either.

I think Wario needs to give our media server a good SMACK!

It could indeed be a DNS error. I'll look into that further.
And there is no maximum number of users, only a maximum bandwidth. So the more people downloading at once, the slower each download will be. But you shouldn't be turned away just because of high traffic.

I downloaded the video(took about 10 minutes). I do have one suggestion though. I dont know what program you are using to encode the video but I use a very nice program that lets you have completely control over size, bitrate, and bit/(pixels*frame). It is nice because you can adjust resolution to match the size of the video you want and still get a good ratio to make the video look good. Its called Gordian Knot, if your interested.

I use VirtualDub for encoding in DivX and encoding in general. And i use my calculator to take care of size vs. quality calculations.

Sounds like a fun game. I'm downloading the movie now it's going slow though; only 3kb/s. Oh well, I bet it's worth it

It downloaded slower than the first one, like at an average of 8Kb/sec. As for the quality of the vid it is not very good. I could see during the whole playback some pixelated and blurry areas, mainly the ground(probably because of its colour).

I just learned that our media server is not dedicated, so its bandwidth is being shared with a few other websites at our hosting facility. So your download might be slow because people are loading up the server on one of those other sites, even though hardly anyone is downloading PGC's files. There's not much I can do about the problem right now, but the good news is that it's probably not anything technically wrong with the server or your connection. If the download is going very slow, just try again later and it may be better. It may be dramatically better, even.

Damn these machines!
They'll take over mankind one day, and we'll be forced to lay our fate in the hands of some guy named "Keanu"!
