Title: The Hobbit! (Ask a question, get an answer)
Post by: Jonnyboy117 on November 06, 2003, 11:22:50 AM
The Hobbit is here, and I'm playing it now for our review next week. We'll do it just like True Crime. If you want to know something about the game, ask away and I'll answer what I can. But please read my impressions first and don't ask stuff that is answered in there.

I just read your impressions and you said that platforming is a big part of the game. Does that mean that there are lots of jumping puzzles? I hate jumping puzzles.

Not sure what you mean by jumping puzzles. Can you give an example from another game?

What the heck? So you don't like Mario games?

Sorry I wasn't clear. I was talking about the sort of jumping puzzles in Half-Life and Jedi Knight 2. The games where you have to repeatedly jump across pits and gaps. Such as in Half-Life, where the floor is missing in an area, and you have to jump from box to box to cross the gap. In Jedi Knight 2, there is a point where you have to jump on a mine cart to progress, and it's extremely frustrating, because it's easy to miss the jump. Finally, in Splinter Cell, on the oil-rig level, you have to jump to a certain pipe, and it's too easy to fall in the ocean. I'm not talking about jumping in Mario, where the controls are precise and the jumping isn't frustrating. I'm talking about games where you have to do extremely precise jumping, and the jumps are poorly designed.

Is exploration an important part of the game? Are there many secret areas and sidequests?

Okay, well the platforming isn't really like that. There are various platforms worked into the environments, and you have to cross them sometimes to get to the next area. It's not that hard, at least the required stuff. There are some optional areas that are very difficult to reach.

Yep and yep. The game likes to tell you to do something but not give you any indication of where to go to do it, so you have to just set out and explore the environment. And there are tons of secret areas (most quite small), as I said in my impressions. Some of the combat tactics and really good items are hidden as well. There are also sidequests in every mission, which will earn you extra courage points (experience) and money.

How come they didnt do "The hobbit" as one of the movies that hit the cinema, since it dealt with Lord of the Rings?

Thanks Sorry that I missed part of your impressions, I was half asleep when I read them.

The Hobbit is a separate story entirely and isn't nearly as large of a scale. Only Bilbo's interaction with Gollum and with the ring are really important to The Lord of the Rings, and are summed up various times. I wouldn't be surprised if they wanted to make a film though.

The dwarves and Gandalf are usually standing around at the beginning and/or end of levels, and you can walk up and talk to them individually. They all have unique voice acting. Gandalf actually sounds a lot like Ian McKellen, though of course it's not.
I have also seen one short sequence in which I got to fight some goblins alongside Gandalf. Needless to say, he kicked a lot more hiney than I did. It was extremely cool looking.
I'm sure the wood elves are in the game, but I'm not to that chapter yet. I have seen one elf (hard to say if it was high or wood) that was injured in the troll cave, and I retrieved a healing draught for her in return for a quest item.

I originally trashed this game when it was announced, because they said it was exclusive to GC because its skewed to the younger crowd. I assume that isnt the case ? It sounds good so far.

Ok, lots of questions for you:
1. What has been the best level so far?
2. Is Mirkwood cool?
3. What has been the most fun moment you've had so far?
4. Is it really a "kiddy" game like so many have said?
5. Can you compare it to the PC demo? You sound as though you are having a good time with it but a lot of people have been bashing the game based on the PC demo. Is it just better on GC?
Thanks!

1. I like the look and music of Hobbiton a lot. For level design, well, the one I just got done with ("Riddles in the Dark", located under the Misty Mountains) was ridiculously large and complex. These levels are seriously much bigger than Banjo-Tooie levels, and that is saying a LOT.
2. Just got into it. But so far it looks pretty cool.
3. Probably jumping around Hobbiton and just getting a feel for it. It's a very pleasant level. The coolest moment was the first time I put on the One Ring. Movies coming!
4. No, the game does not seem geared towards children. The puzzles are very simple, but the game as a whole can be quite difficult. There is some truly nasty platforming, and I mean that in a good way (mostly). I mean, the story is somewhat juvenile, but it's based on the book, which Tokien wrote for children in the first place. But I wouldn't call it a "kiddie" game, no.
5. Haven't played the PC demo, sorry. I think the GC game is pretty good, maybe very good.

I believe it does, but I haven't tried it yet on my HDTV. I'll get back to you on it.
By the way everyone, check the Hobbit movies thread for a new video I just posted. It shows off Bilbo's movement, weapons, attacks, and even the One Ring. And unlike the previous video it has sound. Wait until you hear the sound of putting on the Ring! Also look for the change in colors in the environment with and without the Ring.

FYI, my review will be posted later today. It's very good. The Smaug levels are so hard and so satisfying for those who make it that far. That was what I really wanted to see before starting the review.

Did you ever watch The hobbit as a kid?
quite creepy, especially for the time period it came out.
I know many people wondered why they skipped that one in the movie series as it does seem very incomplete without it.
But hey at least they made a game from it, does it follow the story Is it a new story completely?
