Title: Whoa!
Post by: Grey Ninja on November 04, 2003, 07:49:29 PM
I don't know if you guys remember, but I made a quick page a while back to illustrate a big difference in the way IE and Firebird behaves.  Just for curiousity's sake, I checked out the hits on the page (which unsurprisingly far exceeded my main page... thank god.)  But I found an interesting thing.  Someone had google searched their way into my site.  Rather surprised by that, I tried the same keywords as that person, and I found that my site was the #1 ranked site in google....

Yeah, I know this is totally lame, but I am both sort of proud, and sort of morbidly amused.  Proud because there are 3 words to find a site made by me, and morbidly amused because it took me all of 30 seconds to code the page and it's really crappy.  Maybe I should actually make it good and stuff.  I am a little lazy for that though.  In the meantime, I might just add text.

I google myself occasionally, only to find to my chagrin that every review index ever only wants to quote what I think of Star Wars: Buckethead or whatever it was

Cool.  I just did a google search for "Ian Sane" and my "find a user" results on this forum was the #1 ranked site.  My real name however brings up profiles on various people that aren't me including some business experts, a drag racer, and a fisherman.

I just did a search for my "Berto2K".  First up was also PGC.  Followed by:

- my game collection on IGN
- GI forums profile
- one of my posts on Cube-Europe about my Mario Kart capture
- a comment on resellerratings.com
- a GI post about wario ware scores
- cube-europe post about fzero ax
- a quote of one of my posts on cubezone.nl back during the rare/nintendo licenses debacle
- another resellerratings comment
- and finally my user profile on IGN.

All that fit into just 2 pages of results.  Hmmm, I must post more in more places.

I find i sometimes make the main page for odd combinations of things that were on my site when google caches it.  On top of my site i have this random slogan generator that people can submit things to and it picks one on every page load.  A while ago, when I added avatar support to my site, google cached the avatar news story along with a "buzz lightyear - space ranger" slogan.  That month I got a crap load of hits from people looking for buzz lightyear avatars.  =P  Since then my friends have added all sorts of creepy things to the slogans to see what happens.  One of the most entertaining is "Hot, sexy, naked, pale girls"....  Nothing has turned up from that one yet.  =P
