Title: New EGM scores are in...
Post by: Bill Aurion on October 16, 2003, 05:31:20 PM
Here are some of the scores from the latest EGM(I took out some of the GC games and the LotR GBA game)

--------------------------------------------------------------------
GameCube:
Mario Kart: Double Dash - 10, 10, 9.5 *GOLD* *GAME OF THE MONTH*
RS3- 7.0, 7.0, 7.5
Beyond Good and Evil- 8.5, 9.0, 8.0 *SILVER*
TMNT- 5.5, 6.0. 7.0
XIII- 6.5, 6.5, 6.5
I-Ninja 8.0, 6.0, 6.5
Prince of Persia- 9.5, 9.0., 9.5 *GOLD*
SSX3- 9.0, 9.0, 9.0 *GOLD*

Gameboy Adance:
Fire Emblem- 7.5, 8.0, 8.5 *SILVER*

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Go Mario Kart!  Fire Emblem also did very well....Rebel Strike, on the other hand...It's nice to see BG&E get a good score.  I'm disappointed that Rebel Strike and I-Ninja did less than adequate, but Mario Kart will make up for it

=\ On another note I'll probably end up renting it first, i don't always rely on reviews to know if I'll like a game or not.  MK : DD I have already preordered and I'm glad I did.  Now I just have to save up for this game, and all the rest of the goodies coming out next year.

Becasue it's a below average game.

But I too had high hopes for XIII also.  Spoot.

this may have nothing to do with the gamecube but i was dissapointed a little by the scores of castlevania on the ps2- that was one game i was really looking foward to- it got 7.5 straight accross the board- not bad, but i expected better, especially after all the praise they gave that game

but on a good note- mario kart looks like it will kick ass- i cant wait to see it in action- and prince of persia looks good as expected- and beyond good and evil i cant wait for!
i-ninja still will prove to be a good game i would assume- i will probably get it just for the free pacman vs. with it

And here are the comments...

"I don't care if you're 12 or 42, the day you get MK: DD will feel like Christmas morning- pure exhilarating glee will envelop your soul, demanding that you keep playing "just one more game" into the wee hours of the morning. It's that good."

"I can't say enough good things about Double Dash!!-it's an instant purchase, undoubtedly one of the most fun gaming experiences you'll have this year, next year, and the year after that."

You don't see this kind of praise everyday!

A 5 is an average in EGM. They explain the rating system at the beginning in every issue. Well, they used too, anyway.

I already have MK DD and ROTK preordered, I'm glad they got good scores. Little disappointed with RS III, but of course I'll still be getting it. From what I've heard all they don't like about it are the on foot sections, which account for a very small percentage of the game. I'm VERY excited about Super Mario Bros. 3 coming out this month for GBA (IMO best game ever made), and SSX 3. I've also been thinking of getting Prince of Persia, which looks awesome to me, but for some reason not many people here seem interested...

I can't believe RS 3 did that badly... with the whole RS2 cooperative mode, the bonus demos, 1982 arcade game, and unlockable arcade games in it, and the multiplayer vs modes, the graphics, sound, authenticity, etcetcetc....... I'm not even a Star Wars fan, I didn't dig RS2, but I'm still at a loss for words.
I guess if MKDD, SSX3, and Prince of Persia didn't all release at the same time, RS 3 would've scored 8.5 atleast.

I'm getting Prince of Persia.

Hrm... I never was very excited by RS3, but I was surprised by the score.  Really, I don't see why RS2 needed a sequel - it pretty much covered all the important battles of the movie, and I really don't care about on-foot missions.  Perhaps if it had Jedi Knight style controls on-foot, I'd be interested.  Mmm... Jedi Knight.

Anyway, I'm surprised by the Mario Kart scores.  I liked Mario Kart 64, but I never thought of it as a perfect 10 - more like an 8.  Maybe I'll have to look into the sequel if it's really that much better.  I'm especially surprised that it beat out Prince of Persia, considering how IGN has been hyping it.

If PoP did better than MK, I would be incredibly pissed...PoP deserves no such honor
Title: RE:New EGM scores are in...
Post by: Djunknown on October 16, 2003, 09:12:11 PM
That's a little harsh. I'd say that while Double Dash had some big shoes to fill, this version of Prince of Persia is a long time coming; it was a steller platformer back in the day that almost got lost in legend, always talked about, but never to be seen again.

I didn't catch this month's EGM, after buying 2 issues because of the Soul Calibur 2 content, it was just too smart-assed to me. They diss their readers in the mail section, and for some reason, the staff comes off as obnoxious, I can't put my finger on why I feel this way.

Regardless, its nice to get a heads up on the upcoming games; I gotta start putting some dough aside for when the time comes to relish in gaming goodness.

[off topic] Hey Bill, I don't see you on GI's board. What gives? [/off topic]

Perhaps I was a little harsh the other day, but I have never liked PoP.  It was always a "trial and error" game and it's left a bad taste in my mouth ever since...

[offtopic]I really only joined to burn time while PGC was down, and there were a few people that were really starting to piss me off...[/offtopic]

I'm surprised by the RS3 scores but it will still be a purchase from me. I've been big fan since the first Rogue Squadron and RS3 looks like it will return to the wide variety of levels and the more mild difficulty curve of the first game. I can't wait!

Mario Kart suprises me as well. After E3 you would've thought that everyone believed EAD was offically over the the hill. Hopefully this and Pikmin 2 will remind people that EAD can still own the entire industry.

All I gotta say about Mario is everyone better start searching for a Broadband Adaptor because playing that game through Gamespy Tunnel is going to rule

Also I think that Rebel Strike is going to be good no matter what people say because it has way more replay value and a bgger variety of mission types(i hear the walker missions rule)

With that score is Mario Kart the highest rated Cube game by EGM?

Such a high score suggests that it's an amazing title but I've never really regarded the Mario Kart series as highly as most do (I prefer the high speeds of F-Zero).  I imagine that for me it will still be a really fun party game but I'm not expecting it to be the top game on the Cube, favourable reviews aside.

IanSane:  As stated above, the Wind Waker received the same scores as Double Dash.  Also, Metroid Prime got straight tens.  I forget what Super Smash Bros. got, although I would assume that it was pretty much in that range as well.

Metroid Prime got 10 10 10
something it deserved according to me, it was one of the very flew platinum games, ever.

I wasn't sure if I was going to get Double Dash, having already bought 2 racing games this year (quite a bit for me) Another one is a little bit too much. (Burnout 2 and F-Zero GX)

Not like its going to stop me though, I need to see more reviews though.
thats why I love www.gamerankings.com
O.. why wasn't "Metal Arms: Glitch to the system" in that EGM? Its looking *REALLY* good.

I don't trust EGM's opinions at all.  But they are funny, and they have Hsu and Chan, so I get the magazine.

Or I got it.  I may have to resubscribe.  Haven't been getting it of late.

Oh-ho!  But cash won't get you overnight shipping from EBgames.com!
Nor will it convince Capcom to send you a pre-ordered game a week before its street date!

I stopped trusting EGM's reviews when they gave Pod Racer a Gold, and game of the month, while World Driver Championship got something like 6's and 7's. Some of their reviews aren't even done entirely by EGM staffers, but by editors from their sister mags. It's not a good idea to have people from Xbox Nation (I think that's one of them) reviewing Nintendo games. EGM even claimed that the e-reader extras in SMA4:SMB3 were already on the game, and that you just unlocked them. Can anyone confirm this, because it just sounds like they were trying to make Nintendo look bad.

I know it makes me look crazy to call them biased with these latest scores, but their tone towards Nintendo in the rest of the magazine is always very pessimistic, while they never, EVER criticize Sony. They may criticize some of their games, but never anything in general about the PSX or PS2.

Urkel: I always thought that e-reader worked by already having the required information and just comparing the data it gets with a checksum, then granting access to the feature. I'm not sure what the e-reader even IS, but if it's a barcode scanner like I think there's no way one could cram multiple kilobytes into that code.

It's like a barcode scanner, except instead of scanning bars, it scans tiny dots. I think it can hold something like 2.2 kilobytes of compressed data on a whole card. While the e-reader has been used to unlock features and items that are already in the game like in Animal Crossing, it's mainly used for new content that only exists on the card.

I don't even really care all that much, it's just that EGM is implying that Nintendo is screwing us over by having the e-reader stuff to unlock levels that are supposedly already on the cartridge. It would kind of defeat the purpose of the e-reader if none of it was used to download new and original content. Can anyone with SMB3 and an e-reader confirm this? In other words, once you scan a card for a new level, does it unlock something that you can access whenever you want without ever having to scan that card again, or is that level data only on the card?

I know alot of people dont care for IGN, but I usally agree with most of their scores, and if anything, they are even a little tough on games.  IGN doesnt review a game until they get the final version, not a month early version.  The last month of development is crunch time, and developers work like mad to polish a game before release.  I wouldnt be suprised if the final version of RS3 gets a much higher score from people reviewing the final version.  From the way it sounds, game informer reviewed the version that was at E3.

I stopped caring about the reviews in EGM after the whole XBox vs. GCN thing they did.  Why after so many years of saying that you should get the system that best suits you, the system with the games you want to play, did they all of a sudden find that there was no problem in saying which system is better?  EGM to me is a hypocritical magazine and I don't make my purchases based on thier reviews

Yeah, you really show your hatred by giving a game near perfect marks.  If that is the case, then they must have really "loved" the last Tomb Raider game. Since they "hate" Nintendo, they must "love" Sony and Microsoft.
