Title: Nintendo to release 40gb hard drive for gcn
Post by: MagicToenail on October 16, 2003, 10:47:54 AM
i dont know how accurate this is, but i just read on gamecube cafe that nintendo plans on making this announcement soon. I for one wish that it could be true, im sick of buying so many memory cards. Maybe PGC will come up with an answer shortly, probabaly a rumor though.

This sounds interesting. But what games announced will use it? Maybe N has a few secret games on tap.

Technically it's a Zip drive...but it hasn't even been confirmed yet. I wonder what it would be used for? Hmmmmm...

"But what games announced will use it?"
More than likely, if it's actually released, it will serve only as a "Big Ass Memory Card". I can't see Nintendo pulling an "Expansion Pak" at this point in the game. Plus, if they made a game that used the hard drive, they would have to make the game also accessable for people who don't own it, unless, of course, they included it in a big game (like the EP for Donkey Kong 64 or Majora's Mask)
But I think this is just a rumor though. Probably rumblings of what's to come on Nintendo's next system.

Maybe this was their new hardware anouncement, or was that announcement scheduled for 2004. I cant remember, but im not believing it until it comes directly from nintendo.

We're in luck. The M3G@70N is now 40GB big.

This really concerns me because it reminds me of the Expansion Pak deal. I can almost guarantee that if they do release this there will be certain games that won't work unless you have it.

Isn't 40 gigs a bit excessive. I'm not sure but are harddrives expensive, and arent they even more expensive when squeezed down so small so that is fits in the only unused port under the gamecube(which isn't very big). Well if it is so expensive I wouldn't expect to see something 40 gigs i would think more like 10 GBs

Hard drives aren't that expensive- I got a 120 GB hard drive for $90. Comparitively, a 40GB would be about $30.

So basically it would around the price of an expansion pak. Not bad...
The more I think about it, the more the answer points to games like Stage Debut(which looks quirky, but fun, a la AC)

Rewritable. Mass-storage. Compact. Sounds less like a GCN add-on and more like the storage medium for N5 if you ask me.

Post by: cml on October 16, 2003, 04:09:48 PM
I really do hope they put a harddrive in the N5, because dealing with memory cards out and out sucks on so many levels, especially for developers, but this is 'bean counting' Nintendo we are talking about, and common sense and practicality is often forgotten in Kyoto.
Having said that, there is absolutely 0 chance that this will prove true for GameCube.
Chris.

More out of the rumor mill...This zip drive would be the answer to complaints about the limited size of Ninty's standard memory cards...Though I wouldn't be surprised if it could be used to store large amounts of data in future games(like I said, Stage Debut could be one)

The best answer to that would be to release a Memory card that is at least the same size as your competition. This zip drive talk is nothing short of pure nonsense.
Chris.

Ah ah ah! *waves finger*
Let's not get too hasty now. If this even exists, we have no idea what this thing will be used for. So don't be calling it nonsense until we get more info

There was a Zip drive for the N64, at the very end of its life. It fit into the cartridge slot and didn't have a pass through port, so I'm not sure how it worked, but it at least shows Nintendo has a relationsip with Zip.

I'm not being hasty. And I'm not calling "the zip drive" nonsense either. I am saying the idea that one exists is pure nonsense.

I thought Iwata said Nintendo were going to make an announcement about a new gaming device or something at next E3?. And the impression I got was that it would not be a successor to the GBA or GCN, but something different.
He's not going to announce a useless zip drive. What would be the advantage of that for Nintendo? For developers? For retailers? For gamers?
Chris.

Haha, I seriously doubt it. What Nintendo game on earth could use of 40gb? The discs themselves only hold 1.5 GB. The only reason computers need that kind of space is so people can download tons of pirated music and porn.

Zip drives dont hold that much information. No where near 40Gb.

Isn't it a tad late in GCs life cycle to release such a thing? Maybe if it was compatible with GC and the N5....hmmmm. Is that possible? It would be a clever way to keep the N5s price down. I'm not a techie, but i think Grey Ninja is. So Ninja, could they do that?
Title: RE: Nintendo to release 40gb hard drive for gcn
Post by: Grey Ninja on October 18, 2003, 10:21:45 AM
Not likely Omen. The only ports that the GCN has left are a smaller one on the side, and the memory card slots. I am not sure what the bandwidth is like on the memory card reader, but I am thinking it's pretty low. The last remaining port on the underside is a little small for putting a hard drive in I think, and I once again think it's a little slow to be reading a hard drive.
But the big thing here is that adding a hard drive would really serve no point. There's nothing special about a hard drive. The GCN memory cards are plenty big enough, in spite of all the whining about them, and if Nintendo really needed the extra space for caching large amounts of data, (such as Earthbound DD), there's always the SD card reader.

if its simply an alternative to memory cards, i have no problem with this. if its for use with specific games only, i do have a problem with this.
nintendo themselves commented recently on how their own memory cards werent big enough for the save requirements of most sports games though, so i think that would be the main reason for it. with the sales of sports games on the other consoles, and the sales of sports games on gamecube i dont think its a bad idea.

Well, there goes my great idea
I do find a memory card 251 to be plenty without sports games. I have 2 251's, one for Madden and one for my other 15 games, and it does the job perfectly.

something this large will indeed lead to people making "backups" of games. Its possible with xbox already, I run a small linux distro on mine specifically made for xbox in order to backup games.

I'd say a HD would connect to the Hi-Speed Port. Of course, Serial 2 sounds like an option too, but it would slow down the data transfer. They could always make the HD external (i.e. not at all attached to the Cube, connected via cable) like the C64 did with any kind of drive.

Um...i think IBM has already developed a microdrive for the cube, but I don't think Nintendo had plans to release it, due to cost and applications that would take advantage of it.
But maybe they want to release it after all...maybe Nintendo is developing a game that can use it, or they got the cost down to make a profit off of it.
I remember reading it on this site (PlanetGamecube), but I can't find info on it at all...there's no search function either so searching past articles here is next to impossible. Old News about IBM Micro Drive

The Microdrive for GameCube is actually a rumor long since squashed. Despite what that website says, I think PGC reported it properly as a rumor.

40 Gbs is a bit much, I think. A low-end basic computer these days usually will have a 40 Gb harddrive. This is way too much for just game saves. Even for some "new special feature" on games, I doubt the HD would be that big. It doesn't really sound like something Nintendo would do anyway.

Ya know, i was thinking about the Gamecube yesterday and i started wondering why Xbox is so popular...and then i thought of the idea of a hard drive for the gamecube.....thing about it....the gamecube has so many possibilities....from the hard drive, to the gameboy player, to a modem adapter.....i think it'd be awesome if they made a dvd player for it or even a link cable.....wouldnt that be cool?? all the multiplayer games could now be played on separate TV's on separate systems?? it would make them a lot easier cuz you wouldnt have to look at a little box....you'd have the whole screen....but anyways...i think the harddrive would be a good idea

Kleck: You know Nintendo has the lan games coming out. That allows for one person per TV.
Right now, cause its Nintendo, a HD add on is the least of their concerns. They already stated that the Gamecube is a gaming console, NOTHING MORE. So all these rumors and what not about a HD should be put to rest already. There really is no need for the hard drive as you can see it hasnt helped the xbox too much (except for saving). I remember hearing how fast the xbox loading times would be because of the hard drive and almost 99% of the multi platform games load the fastest on Gamecube.

The only problem with the HDD is that for people with a GB Player connected, they'd need to take it off. I am assuming this of cource, i don't know exactly since i dont have a GB Player. But I guess Nintendo could have a port on the bottom so the GB Player could connect to the bottom of the HDD, i dunno, sumtin like:
