Title: Sony to kill nintendo marketing idea
Post by: Pikkcuber on October 12, 2003, 12:08:47 PM
Nintendos gamecube has been selling pretty good and a good holiday season ahead when sony could come in and crash the party. I read that sony is seriously thinking of cutting the PS2 down to 99$. This would kill nintnedos marketing scheme when a more poular counsel is at the same low price. What do you guys think?

"Even if PS2 drops to 100, Nintendo would still likely benefit more since most people looking to get a second console will already have a PS2." ~Bloodworth

Besides Dan's excellent point, dropping the price of the PS2 again, especially some $80, will only lose Sony even more money. Nintendo can afford such a move since the Gamecube was so cheap tp produce anyway.

yea they would have to be stupid to lower the price that much because the PS2 is still selling well, and that would be a big hitting in hardware losses when they can maintain and not lose as much money

I don't think a Sony price drop would do much because the largest user base is alread PS2. Sony doesn't need to move any more consoles and will no doubt be focusing much more on selling PS2 hardware. But personally I'd love to own a PS2, so I wouldn't mind seeing a lower priced one.

I would like to see a Sony pricedrop just to totally own Microsoft this holiday season. What could Microsoft possible do to combat that? I see Sony as more of a competitor to Microsoft and not so much a threat to Nintendo. Its all good.

and i want a ps2, so personally i wouldn't mind if ps2 dropped in price, aslong as cube maintains strong sales, and by all logic it should.

sony wont do that. they are losing enough money on the ps2 and cutting the price by nearly half would pretty much mean no profits. i got a ps2 on the first day for 900 australian dollars and feel sooo cheated. its not even worth 99 australian dollars. GEEEZ i have 60 games for it and the only ones i really loved was harvest moon, soul caliber2 and burnout 2. all of which are on gamecube. i bought my ps2 for MGS and final fantasy and both are now on cube.

900AUSD???? Man did you get burned. I have a question, what really made you get a console on launch day even though you knew it was grosely over-priced.

I highly doubt that the PS2 will be lowered in price. Like was said before, most are looking to get a second console, next to their PS2. So it would be pointless for Sony to do something like that right now.

everyone seems to be saying that everyone already owns a ps2, and is now only looking for a second console. why is it then, before the price cut the ps2 was outselling the gamecube and xbox combined? i really dont buy it, and i think a price cut would drive sonys sales extremely high.
i dont think the problem would be sony though, it would be microsoft. if sony did cut the price of the ps2 to $99, microsoft would have no choice but to follow. i'm doubtful that sony will cut the price as well, but i think it would have a bigger impact on the gamecube then some people are admiting.

I don't think MS would cut the price of the Xbox, because that would cut alot into even MS's wallet. I think the xbox would just slowly die away at it's current price.

Exactly, the PS2 sold so much then, anyone that would buy one would already have it. . . GC has relatively few consoles sold, so a price drop seems much more welcoming there.

i was too hyped and had just given my playstation to my lil cuz and the ps2 was 750 . plus i wanted a game, memory card and an extra control. i loved it but then gamecube came along and i hated it. gamecube sucks cause metal gear and final fantasy isnt on it, then i bought one cause it was cheap and am a MASSIVE fanboy to nintendo.

how is it possible that just one month before the price cut the ps2 was easily outselling the other consoles when everyone that wants one, has one? it makes absolutely no sense to me, and the only thing a price drop would do is make more people want one. sony may lose money on the price cut, but they would put both nintendo and microsoft in a VERY bad position by doing so.

Price cut is unlikely. I think this rumour was started because of a few over excitied employees seeing flyers for a cut. I've learned recently that it a rather common practice to have flyers made in antcipation of a drop.
But besides that point, Sony really isn't doing that hot outside of the Playstation. An 80$ seems rather unwise when they could use all the profits they can get.

true. it will hurt Microsoft the most, and Nintendo about half as much. the PS2 won't have to drop $80 dollars for the price cut, they've been selling the PS2 for months now at $200 with the network adapter ($40) and ATV offroad 2 ($40), making the system being sold at $120. so in reality it would only be a $20 price drop.

I think a Sony price drop that matches the cube will hit Microsoft extremely hard and Nintendo and i agree with Cap, alot of people still want a PS2(Cube heads, i know i do) you seem to forget that more than 30million ps1s were sold in U.S.A, ps2 at the moment is 18-19million i'm sure they should come close to matching that figure.
