Title: The Lecter Variation
Post by: Gibdo Master on October 11, 2003, 09:47:28 PM
I don't know how much interest anyone here will have in this but apparently a fourth movie is going to be made in the Hannibal Lecter series. This time around though it will be a prequel chronicling the life of a young Hannibal Lecter. You can read a news article about it by clicking here. Like the report says they will need actors to play Hannibal at age 12, 16, 20 and 25 so it seems unlikely that Sir Anthony Hopkins will be in the movie. Kind of makes you wonder what the point is then since Anthony is what really made the character a pop icon. Worse still it's rumored that Macaulay Culkin will be playing Dr. Lecter at one of those ages.

Even if the movie turns out to be crap Thomas Harris will be writing The Lecter Variation novel so that's some comfort to me. I find this funny though since Harris swore that Hannibal would be the last book he wrote in the series. Oh and if you are wondering what's up with the title it's a reference to The Goldberg Variation which Lecter is quite fond of.

Meh, I don't really see too much promise in it.  What made Lector so interesting in the others was that he was such a powerful manipulater and when you make him 12, you are going to lose a great deal of his ability, even if he is still a genius.

I have yet to see Silence of the Lambs. . . read the book, though. . . it was good.

The only way I think it would be interesting is if a good proportion of the movie showed his pre-Silence murders. However my understanding of the series's time line is that Lecter didn't kill his first (known) victim until he was in his mid twenties. With the age range they are aiming for according to the article we probably won't get to see that.
