Title: Mario Kart 16 Players!
Post by: RickPowers on September 17, 2003, 08:44:11 AM
Mario Kart was just demoed at the Gamers' Summit with 16-player cooperative play!

The news from Europe about Mario Kart being 16 players was correct.  Nintendo has just demoed Mario Kart: Double Dash with co-operative play.  One player drives the kart, while the other controls the items and sliding (as well as attacking other players to steal items).  Eight GameCubes can be connected for LAN play, and with co-operative play, this means up to 16 people can play (there is an eight kart limit).

Co-op play is a blast, since a lot of yelling back and forth is required to coordinate attacks.  Players can switch who is driving/attacking by pressing the Z-Button simultaneously.

Another battle mode was unveiled as well, called "Shine Thief".  It's basically capture the flag, where you need to hit the guy carrying the shine.  Whoever manages to stay away for a solid minute with the shine wins.  Bob-Omb Blast was shown as well, and is still the best battle mode in the game.

PGC will have more news from the Gamers' Summit later today.  Check back with us soon!

I already have a Mario Kart LAN party setup. Only two GCs so far, but hey. We're ready.

this is excellent news.  it really is a shame i'll never get to take advantage of the 16 player co-op ... or even anything more than 4.

It's going to be a battle just to find the Broadband Adapters.

I've pre-ordered Mario Kart though in expectation

Don't you mean 4 Gamecubes? Having 8 Gamecubes linked together would allow for 32 players and 16 carts. 4 Gamecubes would provide 16 players and 8 carts, which matches the limit.

No ... I meant what I said.  Two players per Cube, because there is an eight kart limit.  You simply misinterpreted what I posted.  Each pair in a kart gets their own screen.  But if you only have four Cubes, you could indeed have two karts on each cube split-screen and still have 16 players (four players per Cube).

Well that's an extremely weird set up. I misnterpreted it because I naturally assumed there would be 4 players per system with a split screen. I seriously doubt anyone's going to get the full potential out of this, then, since you have to have 8 systems. It's rare enough you find 4 systems and TVs, much less 8. Why would Nintendo do that?

Mouse - apparently the same reason Nintendo wants you to find four GBA's and connector-cord-thingies for FF:CC.

Durr...  Nintendo's gonna start making TV's to combat Sony and will include G-Ports like RCA's Xbox V-Ports.

Er..Mouse he just said you could have 16 players with only four Cubes.  It just allows you to hook up 8 if you have that option so everyone can have their own screens.

mouse_clicker:  Take a second look at Rick's quote.  He's saying that you can have eight TVs with two players each *or* four TVs with four players each.  Both options give you a total of sixteen players.  If you have the necessary amount of TVs (which admittedly most people won't), each tandem will have their own screen, if not, split screen is still an option.

Well if Mario Kart will work through Gamespy then we can take full advantage of 16 players and only need 1 gamecube.

it is easy to misinterperate robots because THEY ARE CRAZY AND SECRETLY WANT TO KILL YOU.

p.s. mario kart -- is for s***!!!

p.p.s. Can you choose to only have one person per kart?

No...That would kind of defeat the purpose of the game...It's too bad that I don't even have my GC here at school nor 15 friends that like Mario Kart  I can, however, do an 8 player lan if I'm lucky enough...

DEFEAT PURPOSE? what if me or a friend want a car by himself?  we would have to swim across the ocean and ask soviet russia for game options back that's what!

Haha, I thought you meant "1 character" per kart.  Yes you don't have to be in the same kart as a friend

It's times like this that I wish I had more video game playing/Mario Kart liking friends. Oh well, of course I'll still buy the game.

You can always have only one PLAYER per kart.  However, there will always be two CHARACTERS per kart.

Co-Op wouldn't work very well over the Internet, since communication between both players would be critical when trying to switch who's driving, when you need items thrown back to the other player, etc.  Trust me, it would be very difficult.

Bloodworth: Yeah, I realised my (second) mistake after it was already being posted and I didn't feel like going through the process of editing it, so I just left it alone. I know what Rick meant now.
