Title: uh oh, I like VF4e better than SC2
Post by: S-U-P-E-R on August 27, 2003, 07:36:36 PM
Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution just came out like a few days or a week ago, instantly as a greatest hit title at 20 bucks, since it's pretty much VF4 with two new guys, BUT;
It has the Quest mode which is mountains more fun than VF4's Kumite mode or SC2's whatsitcalled mode. You travel to different arcades where different kinds of opponents hang out, build up a reputation and enter in various sorts of tournaments. It has the cool custom appearance stuff (and then a lot more) as seen in VF4's Kumite, and has some pretty signifigant AI variations 'n stuff. I hear some of the AI profiles have been based certain prominent real-life players...
Aside from building ranks like in Kumite mode, you get prize money and stuff. And there's little side-quests for additional prizes. It's pretty cool, doods.

Whaaaaat? VF4Evo is already bargain priced over that way of the world? It launched here for full price, and the original release is the same damn price. ;___;
Bitching aside, I did quite enjoy the original VF4 on PS2 when I hired it, like.. Last.. Year, or something. Graphics were pretty ass like, but it was quite refreshing to play a VF again after so many "SUPER MEGA FIREBALL DRAGON RAGE ATOM BOMB STRUT FIGHTER INSTICNT KOMBAT" games.
Have the graphics been touched up for Evolution? The jaggies made my eyes sad in VF4.
*Is to bloody lazy to go read a review*

Belh, I couldn't stand VF4. I rented it once at Blockbuster and returned it the next day. The graphics and everything were great, but it seemed so weighted- I just couldn't get into it. Soul Calibur, on the other hand, I slipped right into and have been there ever since.

VF4 would have been an instant purchase for me if only the character designs were better. I already have SCII and I like it a lot better, DOA is still king in my opinion(Iknowalotofpeopledisagreewiththat).

Loved VF4 myself, especially the AI (the adept to your moves ).
The only downer was the design. The took away the "rolling environment" from VF3--namely all the stages are flat. Guess it was just to hard for them to do correctly (if anyone played VF3 they'll understand).

i think the problem with many people and virtua fighter is that the game requires actual skill to do stuff in it- in soul calibur to beat the single player things, you need just a knowledge of the good combos and you can usually button mash away- in VF4 though- it is a different story- as you progress through the game's single player you become better, and that is what hampers the multiplayer- if you dont have an opponant as good as you, then you will basically whup their ass everytime- in soul calibur, button mashing can get you through, but i always use combos, throws, and guards- another thing in VF4 that most cant get used to is that the game has only 3 buttons you use- punch, kick, and guard- but those translate into thousands of moves and combos- virtua fighter has a steep learning curve so you have to learn things to be good, but soul calibur is a jump right in fighting game- for a single player game, nothing beats VF4 but for multiplayer, soul calibur is by far the best

Yeah, I think it looks a little better.
^^ what rpg lover said, pretty much, except ooo errr is VF4 fun when you and your friend or both fairly expert. Yeah, VF has never really been too beginner friendly, but Quest mode should teach you the stuff you need to know. What I'm saying here is that VF4e is a fun game and everybody should buy it. Give it a chance, guys.

yeah rpglover hit the nail on the head. i'll add to that the fact that the VF series doesn't have the flash of Namco's games, neither in moves nor art direction, save for Goh and Brad.

I have only ever played 1 good 3D fighting game. And thats SC2. Period. MKDA, VF, DOA, they all stink. The movement is way to slow and stiff, I guess is how I'd explain it. But SC2 is the only 3D fighter to feel like a 2D fighter.

And OMF:BG is the only 3D fighter to feel like a true 3D game.

You should all give a try to the original SoulCalibur game (on Dreamcast, and the NAOMI arcades). IMO it plays better than the sequel.

What that was meant to say is that SC is/was the best fighting game ever IMHO 'fcourse...

I think Soul Calibur is the best fighting game ever, but I enjoy Soul Calibur 2 more.

I hate fighting games. I like Soul Calibur II. Ironic, isn't it?

I'm not going to spout which ones better, I've seen flamewars erupt in other sites . I've played VF4 in the arcades, and while it throws me a bone the first few fights, I get whupped and have to dish out more quarters often. SC and SC2 on the other hand, I went quite a while before needing to the machine.
From what other reviews have said, VF4e's single player edges out SC2's quest mode. It sounds great on paper, wish I could try out. I personally liked SC1's mission mode better than SC2, but that's my quirky tastes.
The bottom line is, if you like it, play it! Don't be ashamed by saying you like X game better than Y game. You might get a couple WTF's, but whatever. As long as you like it.
