Title: Soul Calibur 2
Post by: mjbd on August 27, 2003, 05:47:29 PM
Everyone busy with their copy of Sould Calibur 2?  I picked up my copy today.  According to IGN, X-box has the best version, but some on.  We have Link, and Link could kick the crap out of Spawn anyday of the week.  Anyway, this game has alot to offer, when people say deep gameplay, they mean deep.  There are so many move to learn.  This is my first Soul Calibur, so I am a newbie.  Its kinda easy to find yourself helplessly pressing buttons, but I like to go to practice mode, so I can actually learn to use the fighter to the best of his/my ability.  So far, I am very pleased with it.  Although, on the visual side, I wouldnt say its blowing every other fighter away, the graphics are good, but arent leaps and bounds better than whats already out there.  Personally, I think Dead or Alive 3 looks just as pretty.  But we all know its gameplay that matters, everything else is just gravey.  If anyone can pull themselves away from the tv for a minute, les u sknow what you think.

What I want to know is why a lot of people are saying Link's not all he's cracked up to be. I own Soul Calibur, and I've unlocked quite literally everything in it, so I've got a fairly broad knowledge of the characters, and I slipped right into Link from the get go- his attacks are easily memorized and executed and very powerful, albeit not as fast as some of the other characters. He even has his very own cheap combo.

Your lucky you got your copy of SC2 already. I have to wait until Friday or possibly Monday, which gives me time to play more F-Zero GX. Anyway, what IGN would be referring to as the xbox version being the best is probably in terms of graphics but there shouldn't be much difference between all three versions.

Thet said the XBox version has slightly better graphics, but honestly I think that's just the higher resolution- all 3 games were built from the ground up for all 3 systems and they all look identical, in my opinion. So it really comes down to extras, and IGN even admitted obviously Namco paid the most attention to the Gamecube version, going as far as to remix several old Zelda tunes.

I'm not so sure the Xbox version has better graphics. Here's a quote from IGN's review:

"And the GameCube build runs smoothest of the three, according to our own head-to-head, and also features crisp progressive scan support and even a 16x9 widescreen function."

I've seen both versions in action and the Cube version looks EVERY bit as good as the Xbox version to me.

Ahhhh yes, just got my copy today.  Now to get down to business.  The reason why people say Link isn't any good is because a lot of his attacks are slow and are guard impact bait, not to mention the lag after a lot of his whiffed attacks just leaves him open to anything.  However, while I don't think I'd be using him in any tournaments any time soon, he still isn't bad.  I will say this about him though, from what I've experienced Link seems to real good at scoring Ring Outs.  About the X-Box version looking better, I guess anything will look better at 720p wouldn't it?  Otherwise, on a TV that and the Cube version look about the same.  I'd even go as far and say that the cube version may actually be a little sharper.  I'll say this though, this has got to be the best arcade to home port of a fighting game I've ever seen... WOW.

*insert usual rant about having to wait an extra one - six months for mentioned game here*

by the sounds of things, we have found this generation's 'Street Fighter 2'

Given that the Xbox has the weakest controller, I would say that the PS2 or GCN version would simply own the Xbox version.  Especially given that the graphics are pretty much the same across the platforms.  Pick the special character and controller that you like the best and go with it.

Yeah, I remember hearing some people say playing SC2 with a GC controller sucks, but I absolutely have no problems with it...especially since you can fully customize the controller. Oh, and Link is pretty wicked...and I don't really use his projectiles very much, either. So far he's my favorite character overall, with Cassandra right behind him (although I haven't played/unlocked everyone yet...three more to go).

I also read a quick comparison of the games in some magazine I happened to pick up in the store (can't remember the name of it...), and they broke it down into three groups:

Exclusive Character. They said that Link was hands down the best exclusive character of all three platforms.

Technological Prowess. They ranked XBox the highest on this one, although they said the only thing it had over the GC version was slightly faster load times.

Control. They gave this to the PS2, saying that the control is tighter.

Not sure if it was set up so everyone kinda comes out the winner, but I'm totally happy with my game!

I say thee, nay, the XBox controller is a little better suited to SC2 than the GC one, but all you doods should have arcade sticks anyway. And also, the PS2's graphics are visibly worse-off than the GC & XBox's.

First things first..........WOW

Second, i have xbox and cube and i chose GCN cause of Link, & load times.  Graphics are a second fiddle in my book and all versions look almost the same (except ps2 version).  Hmmm Link, Spawn or Tekken guy.......Link, lol spawn is alright but holy fuckin hell even if i was a big spawn fan i would seriously think about gettin GCN version just cause of link.  By the way ps2 controller gets owned by arcade stick so ps2 loses matter what.  And GCN controller so far i have found no problems with.

Third, omg i wish i could quit my job and sit and play this game 24/7

darknight: That just means he's a bit harder to master than some of the other characters- if you know what you're donig with him, he can be every bit as good a character as anyone else. I guess people are just lazy and don't want to formulate strategies.

Ty, you're kidding, right? At least I can reach all the buttons on the GC controller when I want to, or not accidently hit guard instead of vertical slash, or something. I can't use the XBox controller for ANYTHING, much less fighters.

Actually loading times are actually faster on the xbox but it's like a whooping 4 seconds, woot.

As for resolution performance, xbox does both 480P and 720P (both 16:9 & 4:3).  The only time the framerates drop a bit is in the higher resolution which the GC doesn't support.

For controllers, GC was rated the lowest.  A.) Directional pad--it's too small so either you're force to use the analog stick or just deal with the pad.

Though most reviwers played on the xbox "s" controller which works a bit better than the standard one (mostly because the buttons are in the standard square design instead of that diamond shape one).  PS2 controller is the best of the three.   But reality is you can use a PS2 controller on a GC (they have converted cables for it) or even the xbox's.

I've chosen the xbox version, why?  702P and 5.1 DD .  Can care less about any of the exclusive characters since they really don't seem to fit in the style of SC.  Ranged weapons?  ).

I have NEVER understood this argument.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with the GCN D-Pad, and The analog stick actually works better in Soul Calibur II anyways, so what's the deal?

I had no problem with the D-pad, but I preffered the Analog stick.  Link is not a problem to play with.  I used him to play the arcade mode and beat it.  The GCN controller is not an issue with this game.  Reviewers going at the games just have a bias to the GCN and will use the controller as a reason to rate it lower.  At least as far as I am concerned, they do.  The Buttons are just fine, change then so that B, A, and X are your attacks and you have a clear line and not have to reach up and over to get another attack level like you have to with the PS2 and Xbox controller.

I wonder though, is the right analog stick in the PS2 and Xbox version used the same was as in the GCN version, like a quick use of some moves?

I agree that the Cubes controller is fine for this game.  I have had little trouble.  I do prefer the analog over the D-pad, but I have never had a problem with the D-pad on my GCN controller.  Its small, so maybe if you have big hands, it could be a problem.  I run my Cube on my 53inch toshiba using S-video.  My TV isnt even high definition and the picture and really clear.  Its a fairly new TV, so its basically the best of the old technology, and cant imagine a if Icould run it in progressive scan.  Plus, how many people own a HDTV that supports 720p?  You have to give it to Namco though, two near perfect versions of Sould Caliubr, and a pretty good one on PS2.  All developed at the same time.   NICE!

Yeah, I dunno...I think most people think of the PS2 controller as the "standard", so anything different is evil...ya think? Personally, I think the GC controller is much better than the PS2 because the comfort level is far above the dualshock. If I can't get a good hold on the controller, I can't do crap with the game.

I've been playing the SCII demo for a long time and I really like the controls. They seem very intuitive to me. Y for vertical attack- it is above the A button. A for horizontal attacks- it is the main button. X for kicks- off to the side because it's not as important as the other 2 attacks buttons (to me at least). The only problem I could see is if you used the B button for block, which is what people always complain about. I just use the L or R buttons, and it's actually better since you don't have to take your finger off of the attack buttons.

I agree wholeheartedly!  Even though I have a Playcube and PS1 Dual Shock pad, I still prefer using the GC pad.  The buttons just feel more natural for the game and IMO the D-Pad is much better.    Diagonals respond so much better with it. Maybe the average reviewer has big thumbs or something, I dunno.  About SC2 X-Box at 720p, it ain't full screen.  While it does look good and sharp, the fact it ain't covering the whole screen bugs me.  At 480p that and the Cube version look nearly indistinguishable anyway.

Ha! Xbox the weakest; well it matters...the fat one or the small one. Personally I think the X-box controller (the small one) is far superior to either the PS2 or GC (eps. Gamecube...OH GOD I HATE THAT CONTROLLER!). Anyway the arcade beats them all.

What hell was Nintendo thinking when they made this controller...

I don't see why anyone's using the D-pad, anyway- SC2 is a 3D analog fighter. It was made for analog sticks, not D-pads.

And if you ARE using the D-pad, the XBox's crazy waved D-pad certainly isn't any better than the smaller, normal D-pad on the Gamecube.

Uh, the game was 8 way digital joystick in the arcade.  It's no different here.

I always use the D-pad.  The GCN's analog stick is way too sensitive and D-pad just feels more precise.

I like using the d-pad, but after awhile it starts to really sting. >_<

Just to add...Talim = the best damn fighting character ever created ^_^
