Title: Gamecube only $99 after September?
Post by: joshnickerson on August 15, 2003, 06:06:52 PM
Just read in IGN's Mailbag that the Gamecube will indeed drop to $99 after next month. Which would make sense, since Nintendo has stated it wants to burn off it's current inventory... So where does that leave the GBA SP? Will it drop as well, since it wouldn't look right to have a portable system the same price as a full fledged console? And, will this price drop still include the free game?

Unless Ninty also drops the price of the GBA:SP, I doubt it.

Hopefully Sony and Microsoft will follow suit, so I can finally enjoy the other consoles too. I don't know if I agree with the decision to drop that low though.

You don't drop the price of a hot item (GBA SP) just to make a cold item (GC) look better. Even if Nintendo does drop the GC price to $99 (though $120 seems a lot more plausible), the GBA SP pricepoint won't be moved. They have to get at least one x-mas holiday out of the system at full price.

I think dropping the price of the GCN is a great idea. First and foremostly because Nintendo can do it comfortably without taking the kind of huge losses MS is taking on account of its price cuts. With MS desperately losing millions to sell consoles, the least Nintendo can do is stop being so stingy and be willing to risk cutting into its HUGE profits just a little bit. Nintendo already has a great line-up this Fall. With a price-cut and a heavy advertising push in addition, the GCN could gain back a lot of momentum.
As for the GBA SP. I wouldn't worry about it. The thing is so popular people would buy it if it costed more than the GCN.

Well Nintendo needs to play it right... Depending on how they do the Price cut, it can either be seen as a sign of desperation, or a smart buisness move.

well if they did lower the price of sp that would be good. I think they should have never launched sp...it hurts their future handhelds business a bit.

I don't really think so, they got a need boot in the handheld market which was going stagnet. And they can always release another one when the time is right. (Along side the PSP, which more than likely not see the light of day until 2005.)

The problem with lowering the GC to the price of an SP is that the huge sales of the SP will lower because the GC is the same price.

ThePerm was being sarcastic, I'm pretty sure.

I would guess that they wouldn't lower it to $99, since that would make Nintendo appear to be afraid. It is already known that they wish to get rid of present stock, but a $99 tag and the paused production looks too much like the Dreamcast to vultures.
