Title: Massive Blackout
Post by: Berny on August 14, 2003, 02:08:07 PM
For those of you who haven't either heard everywhere from Toronto to NY is under a massive blackout. Looks like they won't be playing their Cubes not to mention able to keep their food cold, air conditioners working, subways functional, etc. etc. I hope this isn't Al Quaeda's idea of "terrorism". If they are responsible, they've been reduced to practical jokers.

State officials said the outage was likely a natural occurrence. They said the Niagara-Mohawk power grid, which provides power for New York and stretches into Canada, was overloaded.
Bloomberg said there was "absolutely no indication" of terrorism.

Nice double post there, Bill. I hope you didn't think I was jumping to the conclusion it was terrorism. As for anyone that says I did, I'll throw a large, preferably jagged stone at you and hide the bomb shelter under my house (aka, the little niche under my stairs.)

Glad I don't live there. . . I wouldn't be on the 'puter for one thing, and I wouldn't be going to play Mario Sunshine soon.

No, I wasn't taking a shot at you Berny. I just took that out of an article at CNN.

Supposedly, a huge lightning bolt hit the niagra falls power network causing it to fail. But what I want to know is...WHAT caused the lightning bolt...I wonder if it was just by coincidence or the terrorists have created a weather control system!
I live in Northern CT, we didn't have any power outages, just a weird 2 sec shutdown. Everything is getting REAL weird around here. And to all the people that live in NY, may you live through the light of darkness.

Now they say it could have been a fire at the plant. Won't they just make up their minds? >_<

For the people who've been affected: How long did you go without power?

I was out for 21 - 22 hours... thank god my GBA SP was just recharged before the blackout. I still tried to "ration" the GBA SP power, though (trying to make it last until the power came back on).

Want to know something really freaky? I was playing Luigi's Mansion on the second day I had it, and I was at the part where the power went out. Well, shortly after that happened, the power actually went out. It's pretty weird, but it pissed me off more than anything. It took me an hour to realize where I had to go (fight that dude to get the key to the basement), and then I had to do it all over again. . .
I think a squirrel fell into the transformer on that occassion. . . poor squirrel. . .

Ha, I win. I live just outside of Detroit and our power went out at roughly 4:25, and it came back on at 4:15. Quite a long 23 hours and 50 minutes it was.
There is now a theory that the problem originated in Cleveland. The current may have somehow reveresed, thus heading East rather then West, and caused the Lake Erie Loop to back up.

For everyone here, what's the longest you've gone without power? Back when I was living in Poulsbo, WA in 1990, there was a major winter storm and our power was out for 3 days. The whole family had to move into the recreation room where the only Fireplace was. Thank god I had a gameboy back then or I would have gone nuts!

Good lord, Grey Ninja, you were livin' like a hillbilly! I lived for 6 months in a cabin with no power, phone or running water. It was the LONGEST 6 months of my life.

When my dad used to live in Canada (in northern Alberta), they had to take day trips down to Edmonton when they wanted food or clothes.

Wassup kiddies, glad to know I wasn't alone.
I was just reading an article on how Dead Phoenix got cancelled (Nooooo...) And the power just went. First I thought it was a fluke, but after being filled in that this was no oridinary blackout, I prepared for the worst. At least the water was still running, so it wasn't impossible...
I lived on a diet of untoasted bread and my dad whipped out the propane grilled and had some pork. At night, my GBA SP came in handy as a makeshift flashlight as well as source of entertainment. I did a bit of reading during the daylight hours and some walking, though the humidity was almost unbeareable.
I'm in the Metro Detroit area (As I stated probably a dozen times) and I believe it was around 34-36 hours till the lights came back on. I heard that the politicians were first playing the blame game (U.S accused Canada and Vice Versa) But George Dubya called Jean Chretin (Canada's Prime Minister) To apologize. I also heard some theory about a Nuclear plant in Lansing (Michigan's capital) went haywire, causing the mayhem.
Thankfully, Chaos and Anarachy was averted. I expected to lock my doors and sleep with a baseball bat, but the people in general stayed calm. Guess people can be rational too....

Berny: They stocked up, man. You don't buy one day's worth of food, you bought enough to last you a looong while.
