Title: Same button combos
Post by: Lokno on August 10, 2003, 09:02:31 PM
Same button combos are when you're pressing the same button, but getting a different move each time, sometimes very different. This was the basic idea of the Starfox Adventure combat system, you can find it in GTA: VC and it even appears in Zelda: Wind Waker. I hate it. It takes the skill out of a game. You don't have to think about it, just mash. Starfox system is just silly, with only one-on-one fights with only one button. It just plays itself, same as Enter the Matrix. But those aside, Vice City and Wind Waker have the exact same single button combo concept where, while you hit the attack button to hit one enemy, you start to do different moves that attack all around you. It's these random moves that allow the player to ignore enemies around them, and even to jump into a group mashing attack and become victorious without a scratch.
I ask you, why dumb down your combat system? It takes the accomplishment out of the game when you don't have to think about the moves. I say NO to single button combos! NO!

In the legend of zelda- Wind Waker, you'll find that most of the buttons are allready used, and so all that is left is the A-button for the sword. However, it is in no way a dumbed-down combat system. If you just mash the one button, you will not only miss out on the fun, but a couple of hearts per brawl, to boot. You'll notice that after the 3-4 combo is over, you do one last swing and have to wait for a few seconds to recover. However, if you use L-targeting to do side-jumps, rolls, backflips, etc., you will likely never get hit. So, although the one-button combo is present, it's just a horrible beginners combat technique.

Those are some good points, the only button left over is the A button. And yeah, after you get off a combo, you definately get a lengthy pause before you can attack again. Long enough for the enemy to get in one hit. So yeah you could go into battle as a button-smashing maniac. Is it smart? no. is it easy to get killed in zelda? not really. So it's easy to just go into a group of enemies with the sword blazin'. If Nintendo made (dunno what words I am lookin for here) the damage you take from enemies more severe and in turn, upped the difficulty, then players would be wiser to use a strategic approach during combat. Something to hopefully look forward to in the next game maybe.

But if you make a more complex game you might drive away fans and people may not liking it thats the only problem.
