Title: Profile Update Help Please
Post by: Ms.Pikmin on August 04, 2003, 12:59:08 PM
I am having a problem with my profile.   I just want to change it to allow for private messages.  When I choose to allow and then click to update profile, I get an error message.  Am I doing something wrong or is there another problem?

I hope this is an okay place to ask this as I've sent a few emails but haven't had a response.

I'd need to know what the error message is, and what browser you're using.  I just did a test on my profile, and I'm not having a problem, so it may be something specific to your setup.

Thanks Rick.  Big doofus is me.  I switched over to Netscape and now all is well.

You tried Firebird yet Ms. Pikmin?  Netscape and Mozilla Firebird are both based on the same code (Gecko), but Netscape is a whole lot slower, and I find that it's more buggy.  If you don't like Firebird for whatever reason, then I would advise going for Mozilla.  It's slower than Firebird, but it's more bug free.

I have downloaded Firebird but for some reason I cannot get it going.  I am a total dumb@$$ when it comes to computers so a friend is helping me figure out what is up.  Yeah, I agree Netscape stinks, but I only have IE and Netscape working at this time.

I'm having the same problem as Ms. Pikmin. I'm using IE 5.1 and the error message is this:
ODBC Error Code = 22005 (Error in assignment)

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Invalid character value for cast specification

The error occurred while processing an element with a general identifier of (CFQUERY), occupying document position (220:14) to (220:104).
I'm no technical wiz and cannot make heads or tails of this. If you could help that would be great.

Is there anything else you need to know? For instance, would the fact that I'm running on Mac OS8.6 effect this?

Ms. Pikmin is on a Mac as well.  This will probably fix the problem.

Well, I don't use enough about a Mac to know the difference, so I will just keep my mouth shut now...  I would try a different browser though.

Berny, as grey Ninja said, I do have a Mac.  For some reason on IE it was giving me that exact same error message you described above.  I also have Netscape on my computer so I just went to my profile while on Netscape and changed what I needed to and am back to using IE after that.  This is a lame solution but I as I said above I really am pretty stupid about computer stuff.

That's just crazy enough to work. Thanks for the heads–up. I'm off to NETSCAPE LAND!

Eh, I don't get an error.  It's just not working.  I've been clicking for five minutes to no avail.  Well, off to click some more.

Oh my gosh. Thank you so much, GN. Mozilla works great. The perfect answer to all profile problems. Thanks again.

No problem.    I'm glad that you don't have to use either IE or Netscape, as both of them are seriously lacking.

Okay guys, yes it's been over a month since I was given the link to download Firebird but I just did it and now have a new problem.

I'm on a Mac and when I did the download it went to my desktop.  The problem is that when I try to open it, it only gives me option of opening in Quicktime Player or Stuffit Expander.  Neither option is working.

Does anyone know what I need to do?

Well, I don't know how helpful I can be, as I am a PC user, and I don't plan on switching to, or even using a Macintosh in the foreseeable future if I can at all avoid it, but here goes.

It's in a .dmg.gz format.  The .gz is a compressed format, and stuffit should be able to decompress it for you.  Inside is a .dmg file.  I have never seen a .dmg file before, but I checked on it, and I have found that it seems to be a disk image... why you would need to load a disk image to use a browser is beyond me, but hey, Macs aren't meant to work in a logical manner.

I found this that might help you out some though.  It's for OS9, but maybe you can figure out what they are talking about.  They seem to be talking about a whole lot of Mac specific stuff.  You seem to need something called Disk Copy, which I am guessing is bundled with your OS.

8.6?!?!  Why?  I am on 10.2 and it rocks!  Mac OS v. 8 was the version I had the most trouble with.  We've been Apple people since the Apple II SE, but when OS 8 hit, we switched to PC.  Only recently have we gone back to Mac with OS X.
