Title: The What if Thread.
Post by: ThePerm on August 02, 2003, 08:25:54 PM
This is what me and Piac like to call the What if Thread.....What if. The purpose of this thread is to create a situation that never happend in the Industry and try to imagine how the industry would be now had the fictional change in history had happened. Its perfectly possible for us to be able to make up stuff about what would happen. Eventually we'll move on to a new made up industry situation on the next page...
ok heres the situation Piac came up with and is a damned good Situation
Imagine if the Sega Master Sytem had done quite well. Imagine if it had captured enough market share from the NES that the NEs became the minority system. Now this was before Sega had games like Sonic and soem other games.
My theory is that Golden Axe would be the top franchise. Atari would have made a comeback and it would be Atari vs Sega right now and also there would be some other ocmpany we'll call them Rockvision.

well i think that atari would become the 'playstation' of the generation, alot of middle to low quality games with a few hits (much like the atari games of old) sega would have an enormously loyal fanbase, sonic and pals would be the most recogniseable figures in the industry, and Phantasy Star would be the alternate Final Fantasy, nintendo, having copped a hideing from sega during the nes/master system days, relinquished back to just doing handhelds, to moderate success. Rare became a big hit on the PC releasing Perfect Dark (no goldeneye) which has numerous mods and other games built from the engine they created.

The Playstation would not have existed, or most likely have been a flop. As we all know, if it wasn't for Nintendo the PS would have never came out. I think that the Final Fantasy series would still be around, and just as big as the Phantasy Star series. As for an Atari comeback, I doubt it would have happened. Sega would be today's Sony and Atari would have been today's Microsoft, only without the obscean (sp?) amount of money. As I recall, the Jaguar sold poorly in Japan like the Xbox today, so without the money to back it up, it would eventually die of. Instead of the N64 and the PS we would have had the Saturn. Microsoft would have most likely released their Xbox by now, but it would be struggling against the Dreamcast. We'd be eagerly awaiting Sega's next machine that would destroy Xbox. And Nintendo would be perfecting 3D on a portable.

More Detail on my thoughts.
Well before NES Yamauchi made alot of failures. His failed instant rice, his faield love hotel, and his faield radar scope alleys. By this time if Sega had acually beat Nintendo. I think he would have retired. He had a bad relationshiop with hsi daughter but a good relationship with her husband(Minoru Arawaka fromer NOA President, and Vice President). I beleive he would have sold the company to Sega(he almost did to Atari back in the day) and then patched up his relationship with his daughter. However Nintendo's franchises prolly would have been underplayed by sega and gone in a completely different direction. I bet Miyamoto would have left Nintendo and became some big Railroad Tycoon or created a huge toy company. When Piac means "Playstation" he is talking about Playstation in spirit and aura. Sega would have released Game Gear but it wouldnt consume as much batteries.
Atari tried multiple comeback attepts however with Nintendo and Sega in the way it wasn't able to get back in the industry. However with Nintendo out of the picture I imagien Atari makes a comeback and actually stays back.
The master System lasts a good four years before the Atari Alien comes out. The Atari Alien is a 16 bit system capable of graphics in between what Genisis and Super Nintendo's were. Anyways Sega loses a bit of market share and counters with The Mega Sega(as opposed to genisis's japanese name MegaDrive) and it is slightly more powerful then the Super Nintendo was and contains a cd-rom drive. However Sega is unable to regain market share from Atari till the next generation the 64 bit(no 32 bit systems) generation.

for the 64 bit generation a new system made by what was originally a pc company makes a system called Rockvision inspired for their love of Rock and colecovision. Anyways, this console is slightyly more powerful then n64 was and has of coarse a cd drive much like the 16 bit generation Sega had in the alternate timeline. Anyways this company launches with alot of variety and puts a big dent on atari and sega. They have Fighting game(2d), a shooting game, a racer, an rpg(its 2d), and a 3d platformer(that is better then mario 64). All at launch the company devised a way to save money by reusing engines and at the same time had quite an advantage of hardware.
Sega releases a 3d Golden Axe game, and gives Flicky a new look. People say Sega are too kiddy.
Atari is really hurting now. They release an awesoem space invader game, but have little 3rd party support other then squaresoft's awesome fighting games.

Mario never existed and the game was called The Adventures of Luigi. The Master System flops horribly, causing Sega to retreat for a few years and gather resources. The Intellivision 6000 crushes the NES because of an 8bit version of Drug Wars. The 16-bit era rolls around. The SNES is launched with a game called Nintendo Clash, featuring all Nintendo characters fighting in a 2D Street fighting style. Sega releases a system called the Demon. Knuckles becomes way more popular then Sonic, so Sonic dies off in the 2nd game and the series continues. Bill Gates goes bankrupt because Apple kicks Microsoft's ass. Sony releases a 16-bit console called Drifter. The SNES comes out on top, but Sony close behind. The next era is 64 bit, but the Intellivision Riptide is the first 128 bit console out. Sega goes bankrupt and is bought out by Sony, which comes out with a 64bit console called the Playstation, and Nintendo releases the NES2.
Sony dominates and causes Intellivision to go bankrupt, and Sony buys them out. Microsoft decides to release a 700 pound behemoth console named Oprah, that has the technology to tell you whats best for you, and how to live your life and how to tell when your lover is cheating on you. The Oprah dominates Sony and Nintendo. For the next-gen Bill Gates works on the Oprah500 "Bigger and Blacker then before" will be the slogan. The Oprah500 becomes the most successful console in history and Oprahsoft becomes the richest company in the entire world. The End.

Haha, there's no opposing funny posts though. *laughs*
Hmmm, what if Sega did well in the Master System days?
1987: Sonic becomes more well known than Mickey Mouse. Quality games (like those from the small, 20 person team from Nintendo) would be outlawed, and games must now consist of bloody fast gameplay, with no consideration as to how crap the camera and controls are. 1993 - Sega realises the problems with it's games, and asks Nintendo - a games only company - to make quality games for it's Hyper Drive system. 1994 - Microsoft becomes bankrupt from it's dependancy on the performance of the 'dotcoms' on the share market 1996 - Realising that Nintendo is a valubale ally, Sega asks Nintendo to come up with an add on to it's system that can play CD ROM games, which is the latest thing in multimedia. Gunpei Yokoi, who is still alive, comes up with the 'Game Boy' CD add on system. 1997 - Sega's shares drop dramatically, and Sega goes bankrupt. Nintendo's hardare project, the 'Game Boy', is continued and becomes a stand-alone console. It is a success, due to it's efficient development times, and the games NIntendo makes for it are realised to be of a higher quality than Sega's. 1998 - Nintendo's team becomes larger, consisting of over 1000 people. 2000 - Sony, who makes copper wires for computer parts, goes bankrupt due to the replacement of copper wires for optic cable, which allows for processor speeds of up to 100 terra hertz. Their failure to forsee this change meant their downfall. 2001 - The first Mario game is released. It's creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, states that 'I hope it's simplicity and non-violent nature will find a place in people's hearts'. Mario goes on to sell 1 million units in the space of two days, and is the beginning of a franchise. 2002 - Mario becomes more well known that Sonic. 2003 - Nintendo becomes the sole creator of console hardware, with it's 'Game Boy' system and 'Gamecube' handheld having 100% of the market.

well, there is one hint of truth there, and it's that there is the possibility that fibre optic cables will replace the standard copper in PC boards to increase their speeds.

Even if Sega was the market leader during the late 80s and not Nintendo I still don't think Atari would ever have made a comeback. Atari was run by a bunch of morons and no matter what they never could have come back. I mean these are the dipsh!ts that manufactured more Pac-Man cartridges then there were consoles sold. These are the guys who made ET! Plus Sega aren't exactly the most brilliant group of businessmen either. Considering the track records of both companies in making retarded decisions I think if Sega and Atari ruled the industry videogames would never have recovered from the crash.
