Title: LEGO City Undercover (Switch) AKA Not-secret best LEGO game - April 4th
Post by: Phil on March 12, 2017, 01:38:53 AM
As the title suggests, LEGO City Undercover releases on the Switch on April 4th, which is awesome as it should arrive right when I'm finally done with Zelda, and by the time I'm done with LEGO City (the Wii U original lasted me over 50 hours), Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will be out. The devs say the load times are much improved. The game is also coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC on the same date, but the Switch version maintains its Nintendo cameos. All versions have co-op, which is a totally brand-new feature for the game.
Anyone else going to pick up this game? Do I need to convince people by sharing my Wii U review from 2013?!!

I never played this on Wii U but was always intrigued. As I recall, that version didn't support off-TV play, which was a factor in me never getting around to it, so this version would be perfect.

I think that the Wii U GamePad options across all the remastered versions use the D-Pad to activate the scanner, for example, instead of requiring gyro-based movement and the extra screen. They were cool in the Wii U original, but nothing that will really be missed, as because of that, there was no off-TV play option. :)

That alone has sold me on this game! The one thing missing from the original was co-op.

Bah! The addition of co-op always trumps a Phil review. lol :)

This game is a buy for me on two conditions:
1) Loading times are eradicated. 2) Co-Op is fun to play.
If both of those aren't true, I can't do a re-buy on the game. Even if they are true, I think i'd need a low price buy-in.

It's been so long since I played the original and I remember enjoying it so much even with the loading (which was annoying) that that makes it worth a second purchase. (Though I really don't want to contend with the loading and GamePad of the Wii U version.)

I loved Lego City on the Wii U. Its a pity the 3DS version isnt as good. I dont have any plan on buying the Switch version, but I might eventually.

The load times never bothered me too much, though they were noticeable. I've played games with worse load times.

I find it odd that they're charging $60 for this game, which is $10 more than what it launched for on Wii U. It's also $20 right now on Wii U, and for that price difference I'd say it's still worth playing on Wii U for anyone who wanted to right now.
I felt the main thing lacking in the Wii U version was co-op, so I might be willing to grab this version when it falls to the $20 or lower mark.

I definitely couldn't have been bothered too much, I guess, since I played 55 hours and did 100% completion. It really was only an issue at the start or between missions, as the city itself was load free.

I still play PlayStation 2 games from time to time, so I'm used to long loading. I don't think Lego City was any worse at loading than some of those games.

NWR preview, a couple days old, but this LEGO City is aka not-secret best LEGO game releasing April 4th.
What the heck is the point of even doing a physical version if you have to take up so much space on your Switch hard drive? God, I hate third parties on Nintendo consoles. They just somehow keep shooting themselves in the foot and then wonder why we're so hesitant to buy their products.

Now that is weird. I can see two possible reasons why. 1. They cheaped out on the Switch game card and got the lowest capacity one. 2. This is their solution to improving the load times.
Both seem likely.

It's been clarified by WB. That was an error on the box, as the full game will be on the card, no D/L and no internet connection required to play the game.

This seems to be LEGO City Undercover (Switch) AKA Not-secret bad port - April 4th. All versions seem to run bad or have bad loading times still... ;_;

Well, sounds like if you didn't mind the load times in the Wii U version then it is still an improvement. Pros/cons from the link you provided:
+ Smaller footprint + Additional content + Multiplayer + Portable +/? Less crashing / freezing -/? 720p docked - 50 second load times (10-20 seconds better than Wii U, but still too long) - Worse framerate (sub 30fps for majority of video, really hope there's just something wrong with their capture process) - Still lots of pop-in - Full price enhanced port

The game still has performance issues? If true, that's a bummer.

The framerate issues are jarring (I don't remember the Wii U version being as bad), but the big thing is that the devs said the loading times were a big priority and would be "dramatically improved." They obviously are not.

Perhaps that was as not-secret as LEGO City Undercover being the not-secret best LEGO game. Maybe if the game was a major downgrade, yeah, but it'll be nice to be able to play the game while watching/listening to TV.

If they can improve load times with some patches down the line, I'm definitely curious about this as a co-op game with my wife. Seems up her alley.

Load times were a bit of a hassle in the Wii U version. I'm hoping the performance in handheld mode isn't too shabby (I'm not usually bothered by frame-rate issues, though), so when loading happens, I can just watch TV for the 50 seconds or so it now takes. With the Wii U version, you had to use the GamePad for scanning and the map, so there was no Off-TV option available. :(

So I got a good deal of time in with the game last night. Played co-op with my wife. First, she had a blast with it, way more than either of us thought she would have. Co-op was the one thing this game was missing and it makes it go from great to phenomenal.
Graphics are nice, no slowdown that I saw. I also never notices slowdown in BotW (other than the random freeze glitch) so take that for what you will. Loading times are very infrequent, and really not that long. It actually gave us enough time to read the little blurbs from Officer Honey, which were quirky, funny, and entertaining.
There do seem to be a few odd quirks with the navigation aid. My wife could not get the navigation studs to appear on her screen, so that might be a P1 thing only, but either player can initiate story sequences and other marker points.
My wife was an awful driver in-game, and coupled with her inability to get the nav guide up she just started riding on my cars. That was funny, but we also discovered that there are some vehicles like buses where the second player can hop on as a passenger.
So I highly recommend this game, even if you already owned it on Wii U. The only people I would caution against this game are Wii U game owners who will never use the co-op mode and people not fond of Lego games (though if you play one, this should be it).

Even at $60, I'm feeling pretty good about my purchase. The co-op mode has been the most pleasant surprise as my wife has really gotten into playing this game with me.

Big frame-rate issues in handheld mode, but not enough to make me not want to play it while watching The Golden Girls. Really enjoying this game for the second time. I'm just smarter this go around and not exploring the city until I have most of the costumes, if not all of them.

I've been playing it in handheld mode more since I have to share the TV with my wife, and I'm still not seeing any slow-down. But I've only been in the area surrounding the precinct and Albatross Island. Might be more when I head out to those far-off and open locations.

How far away from each other can players go in the city? Are they independent?

They are independent on vertical split screens. So pretty far. I've been on completely different parts of the map from my wife. I'll have to run some tests and see how the game performs while on opposite ends of the map.
This might explain the reason for the load times. If the game has to pre-load nearly the entire map it would take a bit, and due to the drop-in drop-out nature of the co-op the game may just be designed with the intention of being prepared for co-op at any given moment. In programming you build things with the worst-case scenario in mind.

It looks like whoever said there were Nintendo references in the Switch version of LEGO City was wrong. Got to the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa-like structure and got a LEGO City police badge instead of a Star.

But the legalese on the game's opening splash page makes mention of Nintendo imagery being owned by Nintendo, unless that was merely in reference to the Switch and Nintendo logos.

So apparently the 479 MB patch that folks downloaded patched in the Nintendo references. I had been playing without the patch and without the Nintendo references (for instance, the Power Star/Super Star atop the Leaning Tower in Fresco gave me a LEGO City police badge instead).

There's a Bob-Omb in north Pagoda that you lead to a cage. You don't need any special disguises for it. There should also be an item box along the coast of Pagoda (under a dock, I believe) that also doesn't require a disguise. Otherwise, I recommend exploring LEGO City for objectives to unlock Gold Bricks and find the Nintendo stuff after you beat the game. That way you won't reach a thing like a circuit box or planter that can only be interacted with with a certain disguise and perhaps forget about where it is later.
So yeah, the day one patch was for the Nintendo references.

The Wii U version was published by Nintendo so its price followed many other Nintendo games and didn't officially drop for a while. This version isn't published by Nintendo so its price will drop like a stone, just like every other LEGO game (and it's also a re-release).
