Title: Post happy video game music here
Post by: Phil on October 22, 2016, 08:52:37 PM
It's sometimes nice to just have a nice and happy video game song to enjoy and listen to. My offering is a song from Paper Mario: Color Splash.

The Color Splash soundtrack is ridiculously catchy innit.
Here's my offering, hopefully I can get the embedding to work, but if not - it's the bicycle theme from Pokémon Gold/Silver. For everyone's convenience I've been so nice to link the 10 hour looped version because obviously nobody's shutting this off after a minute or two, let's be real.

Yes! A lovely theme that's so simple being 8-bit but so good regardless!

Here's my pick for today:

Honestly the Sonic Mania trailer music is really good. I could see it being the music to an early, easy track in an F-Zero game. Here's the full track.

Kirby is happy, I haven't played Epic Yarn yet but it's on the list to play one day. This one's called Butter Building and has a fantastically happy piano arrangement.

Kirby is a REALLY easy place to go here in most cases, and I feel there's a lot of directions you can go with a simple cue like "happy music." do you go for something that's low energy and fills you with contented feelings? do you go with something that has a bit of energy to it? Something that feels grandiose...? There's so many directions my mind is tugging in right now.

That being said, let's go for an obscure little gem that is a jaunty little tune that fills one with a sense of adventure and hope for the future. For those who are nostalgic for a certain pre-pokemon game for the game boy, this might ring as familiar.

Not to turn this into a Kirby song topic, but one of my favorite Wii U soundtracks is none other than Kirby and the Rainbow Curse! Seriously, it's such an AWESOME soundtrack!

Love this song! Here's an orchestrated version that never fails to put a smile on my face (Except when it doesn't, of course).

a new day (where I live) brings us a new piece! I suppose going obscure didn't impress much, so let's go with something iconic and filled with an incredible amount of grandeur. This piece of music is possibly one of my favorite things to come out of the N64 period (as in... listening to this song is preferable to playing most N64 games.)

There are remixes I prefer, but I figure i'd post the unvarnished version first.

Still my favorite Mario Kart ending. The overview of the tracks, the Kenta Nagata-composed piece, it all fills me with such joy, happiness, and nostalgia.  :D

Given the size of the grin I had when I first heard "Don't Worry" in context, it qualifies.

This happy song takes the edge off of some of the difficult puzzles.

Not 'happy' perhaps, but I've always found that Star Fox Adventures has some of the best soothing, calming music of the GameCube era. Game itself definitely has problems, but wandering through the gorgeous Thorntail Hollow while several variations on this tune played was a nice and peaceful experience.

This happy song takes the edge off of some of the difficult puzzles.

This game is still on my list but might have to move it up in priority if all the music's like this! :)

How about some de Blob 2 for your evening?

Ohhhh great pick! Allow me to follow up with another one from De Blob 1. All that groovy slap-bass and the big band brass section almost manage to cure my instant carpal tunnel syndrome flashbacks whenever I remember this game! (Who mapped jump to waggling in a platformer?!!?!)

This one is WHITE HOT off the presses of Tee Lopes' music mixin' machines, pieced together through gameplay Polygon has posted to their youtube channel. it's poppy and brings to mind many things... besides having that classic riff from "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" there, the use of synthesized trumpet and 90's pop-ish tunes really makes me think of Sunset Riders... of course, Mr. Lopes is also amazing at capturing that sound I feel is so indicative of Sonic CD.

Without further adieu, allow me to present to you...

MIRAGE SALOON!

A timely song for a certain sport concluding its season this evening!

Since this comes out on the North American Virtual Console today:

One of my favorite Mario sports soundtracks. Same composer did music for Final Fantasy XIV.

So as far as soundtracks go, The Last Story has your fairly standard epic RPG music. But the very last song on the official soundtrack, composed by Nobuo Uematsu mind you, has this gem simply called "Meowmeowmeowmeowmeow~". As far as I know it was not used in-game.

I feel that this preamble to today's selection may be a little bit on the ramble-tastic side, so please bear with me.

Bomberman is a WEIRD franchise for me. I really don't like the 2D top down games. maybe I just never had the right multiplayer experience with the likes of Saturn Bomberman or the TG16 stuff or something, but... my favorite entries into this franchise are the n64 titles.

Maybe this was born out of some sort of lack of other titles to play, or maybe I enjoyed the experimentation going on, but I feel this was the era where Hudson was in their top form. Each of the 3 N64 titles are so different in flavor as they all struggled to find identity for Shirobon, and I delighted in this. This experimentation shows in each game's soundtrack as well.

I couldn't choose just one game to reprisent, so today, I bring you THREE seperate songs!

First on the docket is Blue Resort from Bomberman 64. Bomberman 64 was composer Afumi Tada's only video game composition credit, but there's some real awesome variety in this soundtrack in the early parts of it until it really starts getting to that House/techno sound for it's later levels and bosses in particular. Blue resort is my go-to song for the sort of French quartet thing that a lot of the Layton games and Pokemon X and Y went for.  I think it's the drum beat underneath giving it a bit more energy and drive to it.

Secondly, let's go with Redial from Bomberman Hero. possibly one of the most upbeat and adventurous D&B/Jungle songs I've ever heard. Composer Jun Chikamura really went out of her way to infuse Bomberman Hero's more action-y soundtrack with Drum n' Bass goodness. it fits perfectly with the 3D Platformer experiment, given that the genre really had hit it's stride in that late 90's period. I really think this piece in particular transcends the game and ends up being one of the best composed D&B pieces I've had thte pleasure of listening to, period.

The Second attack was more of a... weird Metroidvania-ish sort of game that actually adhered more to traditional bomberman gameplay while departing at the same time. with the mix and variety of environments, the elemental bombs, and the weird sort of co-op partner in pommy, it's no surprise the game has a bunch of composers. Epykyur here is one of the optional last planets that's based on weird puzzle elements and  this... weird amusement park idea. the music is jovial, but also a little off-putting, which is why I felt that maybe for a change of pace it would be the ideal pic over something like Starlight's Las Vegas Muzak or Horizon's airy flute melody.

I think Yasunori Mitsuda of Chrono Trigger/Cross and Xenogears fame composed the music for Second Attack. Great soundtrack for a verrrrry expensive game!

How about some Sonic Runners for this Sunday! Sonic Team games always have one thing in common, a great soundtrack! Sonic Runners is no exception!

THat is deeply upsetting to learn. :/

I had a pretty decent N64 collection at the time the system was out, but I hung out with a lot of kids who'd try to steal my stuff, and... a vast majority of my N64 games were a casualty of that. Bomberman 64: The Second Attack and Clayfighter Sculptor's Cut are among the casualties of my collection from when I was but a wee lad.

Since I'm playing Mario Party: Star Rush, how about a song from the series and my personal favorite in the series?

Anyway who remembers Monkey Racing?!
