Title: My Nintendo Gold Coin Expiration Extended
Post by: Shaymin on August 31, 2016, 03:29:52 AM

And rewards scheduled to change tomorrow.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/43313/my-nintendo-gold-coin-expiration-extended

Heavy eShop buyers with My Nintendo accounts can be a little bit more patient.

The site updated today to announce that Gold coins, the credit earned from eShop purchases, will now expire 12 months after they are earned. Previously, both Gold and Platinum (website use and Miitomo) coins expired after six months and the Platinum time limit is not changing.

A large portion of the current My Nintendo rewards in North America are set to expire at 4am Eastern time tomorrow morning.

Haven't they kept extending the deadline for Twilight Princess Picross as well? The number of people redeeming rewards must be extremely low.

Im glad it has been extended, but I think they shouldn't expire at all.

Absolutely. I don't even mind Platinum coins expiring because they're earned by playing games. Gold coins, however, are earned by purchasing digital content. I don't want to be forced to get something I don't really want just because my Gold coins are due to expire and something I want is unavailable.

It's always had an expiration of October 1, as far as I can tell.

Agreed, but this is so much better than it was.  I will have no problem finding something to use them on over the course of a year.

1. They should never expire.
2. We should be able to buy a VC game of our choice with 20-30 gold coins
3. Seriously how is this better than Club Nintendo, it's not enticing anyone to do anything
4. Hardly a good step forward going towards NX

How is it not better? All the neckbeards (not me I swear) can't go into Gamestop and take photos of the Club Nintendo codes nobody used.

Seriously though, this new system just switch from physical and digital giving coins to just digital and improved reward variety, which Club Nintendo could have easily done. Hell they don't even offer physical merchandise anymore.

Objectively comparing similar rewards, MyNintendo is FAR more generous than Club Nintendo. For example, to get a free 3DS Virtual Console game, I had to spend I think 45 gold coins in My Nintendo, which I imagine is roughly equivalent to $45 real spend. But in Club Nintendo, similar games cost 150 Club nintendo Coins, which was roughly equivalent to $150 real spend. MyNintendo redemption values are VASTLY more in our favor than Club Nintendo.

The REAL drawback is the switch to all digital rewards, which has so constrained the reward options as to really give fewer desirable options. Mere physicality and limited supply is a huge draw even if I had to spend $800 real spend for what is a deck of cards. But because I own so many eShop games already and don't have much time, it's hard to get excited about spending even 45 gold coins for a VC back catalog title that has a retail value five times a deck of cards.

Of course, the switch to digital rewards is easier for Nintendo to run. But the limited number of rewards really ham strings them in other ways. I've personally thought that low-lying fruit to improve the situation is for Nintendo to offer way more DLC options as rewards, like Mii Costume DLC in Smash Bros. Imagine if a new reward was a Hyrule Warriors DLC? An increased offering of DLC rewards would be easy to implement and keep costs down while widen the rewards offerings for gold coins.

It's nice they changed it to a year, but it's still worse than Club Nintendo which was two years plus the remainder of the third.

My Nintendo has been pretty disappointing compared to Club Nintendo, and the Digital Deluxe Program. Both were leagues better.

My point was this new system was supposed to reward players for buying and playing games frequently, but they replaced all the rewards with discounts or digital t-shirts, not full games, VC or eShop games.

One cool thing though is that you got the coins for the original price, not the discounted price :)

So far I have got Twilight Princess Picross and WarioWare Touched for free, which isn't something you could say about Club Nintendo.

Huh? There's like five VC games you can get for free right now for gold points, and one game you can get free for platinum points.

The game rewards are pretty awesome actually, IF you don't already own them.

Honestly a HUGE thing they could do is to commit to reskinning the Picross game and just releasing a new one of those at the 1000 point level every three months. Metroid Picross? Donkey Kong Picross? Kid Icarus Picross? YES PLEASE NINTENDO!!!!

This can all be tweaked easily in the future. The main improvements are that the web interface is much better and that coins are automatically awarded after a digital purchase.  I personally think the rewards are better. I've already used a 30% discount on OOT 3D and gotten TP picross and a Zelda theme for free.  The rewards also seem to be rotating more frequently than Club Nintendo.

I think if they increased/doubled the reward variety, especially for the gold point rewards, then it'd be like night and day better. Also, if the coming Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing Mobile Apps are tightly integrated to MyNintendo that'd naturally triple the sorts of things you could use points for. Oh geez, I need to start stockpiling stuff!

Lolz, exactly!

I think discounts/skins/pointless crap should be restricted to Platinum coins, free/full games should be exchanged for gold coins.
Then the dream of "buy games, get more games" comes true.

Yes it's true in the latest update they do have a few things in that category, but no where near enough. Also I'm cautiously optimistic things will get better. Maybe.
At a guess though, NoA will screw things up, NoE will be slightly better, and NCL will have the best stuff :

I was actually considering this if it were the 3DS game, so it is actually the 3DS game or is it mistakenly Dr. Luigi?

Yeah, I agree, though it's also too bad it doesn't work more like the Digital Deluxe program which was pretty awesome. It feels like a hollow shell of a rewards program and still needs to have a lot of things added to even match Club Nintendo, let alone surpass it.
