Title: Just Finished Eternal Darkness. WOW!
Post by: OsonCubed320 on July 10, 2003, 04:38:41 PM
Wow you guys, you all have to go out and buy this game if you haven't already. It is probably one of my favorite Video Games next to Super Mario 64 and Legend of ZeldaoT. Just please go out and buy this! It is a really good under rated game and deserves some recognition. I promise you it will leave you with some great memories.

We're all proud of you.

Now if only more people bought the damn game WHEN IT CAME OUT, it would've had an even stronger show of support.

I don't think it's underrated, it's just a sleeper hit.  everyone seems to love it, it's just that that everyone is a small group.  Anyway, i gave the game a rental, and i didn't like the controls, especially fighting.  But i loved the atmoshere, it's not the things that scare you, it's the anticipation you have waiting for something to pop out and suck on your innards that gave me the creeps.  I just didn't give the game enough time to unfold.

I recently bought ED because of the "Buy Eternal Darkness in 2003 Campaign" over at IGN.  I got it for $15 and could not be happier, I clocked 14 hours and beat one of the three paths in less than four days (which is alot for me).  It definitely jumped up to one of my favorite titles available for GameCube.

The game was brilliant. The gameplay wasn't quite up to par with other Nintendo titles IMO but most games with as complex a story and as many cinamatics as ED have barely any gameplay and hardly qualify as games at all. So ED is definitly in a league of its own.

I'm actually hoping SK will remake ED for Nintendo's next console.
It could even be marketted as an entirely original game since so few people played the original. The game deserved to be a massive hit and Nintendo should give it another chance at becoming one.

Yes ED is great.  I want Too Human now.  Are you listening Silicon Knights?

I think the gameplay is the best of any cube game to date.

No, it blew past it.

Man, this game owned everybody else's nuts so bad that it can't be put into words.  If anybody hasn't yet beaten it through all three paths, do so now, because the additional ending sequence that gets tacked on adds the final and ultimate twist to the whole story.  *voice=diabolical laugh* Mwa ha ha ha! *end voice*  Talk about passive agressive.  *voice=diabolical laugh* Mwa ha, ha ha, ha ha, ha! *end voice*

ED is such a great game.  I saw it at Babbages for only $15.  I haven't beaten any of the paths yet, but I'm close, since I've only rented it and played it at my friends house.

It constantly amazes me how many people haven't played the game.

Anyways, I'm glad that you enjoyed the game, and I assure you that we were all just as amazed when we played the game for the first time.  Without a doubt, it's one of the greatest games ever made.

Underrated? No- it got rave reviews. Hardly anypne bought it, though, which is really a shame because it's easily one of my favorite games ever. I REALLY hope Silicon Knights makes a sequel- I want the rest of the story, Denis!

I find it really weird that ED sold so little copies and that so many people on this forum haven't played it.  I remember when it came out everyone on the forum was talking about how great it was.  Where did all you people who have never played it come from?

ED is proof that Nintendo needs to improve their advertising.  Almost everyone I've met who has played it thinks it's amazing.  If Nintendo just f*cking told the public about it then the damn thing could have been a big hit.  The way Nintendo advertised ED it's like they wanted a mature Nintendo game to fail.

Exactly, Ian- Eternal Darkness commercials only aired real late at night on channels no one watched a total of like 3 times. I'm SURE if the general public knew about the game it would've sold a lot better. I don't think I've met anyone who actually didn't like it.

Mouse Clicker, describe to me an advertisement about Eternal Darkness that would explain why you wanted to buy the game without spoiling any story details, and takes 30 seconds or less.

I think it's like Denis said.  Eternal Darkness is a game that is simply impossible to advertise.
Title: Just Finished Eternal Darkness. WOW!
Post by: mouse_clicker on July 11, 2003, 08:35:20 AM
That doesn't mean you don't advertise at all- you're acting like it was doomed from the start. An ideal advertisement would start saying "For two millenia an ancient evil has been plotting the demise of mankind and 12 people must stop them, before they go INSANE! From the makers of Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain comes the most epic game you will ever play- Eternal Darkness. Only for Nintendo Gamecube"- all the while they'll be showing shots of the FMV and zombies and various other monsters getting destroyed. If there were any reviews I'd include some quotes from them as well.

"describe to me an advertisement about Eternal Darkness that would explain why you wanted to buy the game without spoiling any story details, and takes 30 seconds or less."

There's a couple options.  Show a combination of game footage mixed with the opening FMV with review quotes from it.  Review quotes always work well.  Another option is to show something similar with the Edward Roivas voiceover from the beginning of the game.  Hell just show the Maximillian "may the rats eat your eyes" scene and that would get people curious.  Like many Nintendo games ED had some pretty cool trailers.  Nintendo's trailers are often WAY better than their commericials and if they just showed their trailers on TV it would really help with their marketing.

I suppose.  But I remember seeing the commercials on TV all the time regardless of their quality.

"But I remember seeing the commercials on TV all the time regardless of their quality."

That was likely the Canadian commercial.  I believe they showed different ads in the US and Canada.  ED ads were shown much more frequently in Canada, probably because it's a Canadian game.

Nope, in the US.  I saw tons of ads for ED.  Some on cable some on the network channels.  For a while, they were playing them at least once during every show.

yeah I got it in November, after I saw an article about it in Gamepro and another one in Nintendo power. Up until then, I barely knew the game existed. I got it for $40, and I would have gladly paid $50 if I knew how good a game it was.

I played through all 3 routes. The first time took me about 20 hours, and the last took me about 4:30. That's because I wanted to see how fast it could be beaten

I got this game in the IGN ED campaign.  Right now I'm on Paul's level.  Just wondering- what path do you think is the easiest? I'm doing the green path this time.

now, this is only my opinion but i dont think the game is that great. the story IS great though, and its really the only reason i made it throught the game once.  the game is just far too linear and easy for my tastes. i've owned this game since the day it came out and just cant bring myself to play it again. not that i havent tried, i just end up turning it off out of boredom. to each their own i guess.

Blue is easiest.
Red is hardest.
Green is funnest.

Don't really have much else to say right now.

I like playing blue because then you face green and your sanity meter is always low.

Actually I like green, because you face lots of sanity draining monsters, and I get to see lots of my lord and master, Xel'lotath.

First time I played as green and I loved Xel'lotath. I loved how when Pious would be talking to her and she would be normal talking and then in the next sentence she would follow with a whisper. I loved that. It made her sound so evil. Now I am playing the blue route and I dont like Ulyoath. Why I dont know I just seemed to like Xel'otath. Maybe I will quit playing blue and start the red route. Is the red one better?

Everyone's different, finish blue and then play red and see for yourself which is better.  You get to play the game more, plus, as I've heard (I don't actually own the game, but for 15 bucks I can't resist), it's worth the surprise to finish each path.

But yea, it's surprising how many people don't even know about this game.  I was talking about it wityh my friend and I was like,
"Yeah thinkin' about gettin' Eternal Darkness"
And he was like,
"What's that?"
And then I explained it too him, and he said,
"Sounds bad"
"It's supposed to be awsome, and it's only $15 bucks"
"Yeah, prolly cause it's bad"

...or it's because it's been out for a while, but who cares, i won't let him play it...
MWAHAHAHAHAH!!!

Just to tell you, he's a GC owner too, and he hasn't been known to make stupid desicions when buying games.  He's just horribly uninformed.  Makes me sad...

If you play all 3 paths, you get a cut-scene that basically explains how each path fits together and answers some questions you'll probably have about the story. It's very informative and a real treat to anyone that likes the story.

Okay, I have a problem.  I really, really want this game.  And at 15 bucks, i want to run the the store right now in my underwear, grab the game, hand the clerk a 20 and run out.  But I am only thirteen years old.  I don't have much experience with horror movies or games, so I don't know what to expect, and I don't really know if I can handle it.  I don't picture myself as a scaredy cat or anything, or squimish for that matter, but tthe thing of it is, really don't know.

Question one:  Am I too young? (I disregard ESRB ratings, since SSBM got a T...hogwash I tell you)

I accidently read about some of the more serious insanity effects, such as the fake reboot and error messages and some more
Question Two:  Will this seriously ruin the insanity factor of the game?

Request:  If any of you guys can do this, it would be greatly appreciated.  I want the title of a horror novel that is similar in the, how do you say, "fright factor" of this game.  I am about to start either "The Shining" or "Misery" by Stephen King (for those of you who participated in the good book thread, I gave up "It" becasue I wanted to get used to Stephen King by reading his classics).  So if one of these books is a phycological thriller such as Eternal Darkness in "fright factor" I'd be all set.

Really?  I'm up to Edward Roivas' chapter on the Ulyoth path.  Is it true that if you beat the game in all the paths you get an unlimited ammo cheat?

you can get some eternal mode where you can play any chapter of the game and have max health if you want (that's nice for those rooms where you like to check out the stuff.. i love the artwork on the walls outside The Great Lord Mantorok's chamber

After you've gotten the special ending, in the Chapter Select part you have the option of playing with your character being immune to anything that drops magic, health or sanity- it may have infinite ammo, too, I'm not sure.

If you're reading the Shining and Misery, I think you can handle this game. Truthfully, there's no real horror in the ghost aspect of it. If you want the closest comparison, read the shortstory The Call of Cthullhu by H. P. Lovecraft- Eternal Darkness is pretty much a videogame adaption of it. There's nothing that will really scare you, but it is very creepy and the storyline is very deep- just pay attention.

Question Two: Will this seriously ruin the insanity factor of the game?

Nah- I think I read there's something like 65 insanity effects and I barely experience half of them after all 3 play throughs. There's a good chance you won't even see the one you mentioned, and if you do there's others that are just as good if not better. Just don't go reading about any other insanity effects.

KnowsNothing, personally the game didn't scare me.  Mind you, no movies or games have EVER scared me, and I have been watching all manner of things since I was old enough to talk.  Hell, my favorite movies when I was 5 were "Red Dawn" (graphic war movie), "Conan The Barbarian", and "Terminator"

In some ways, I really love my parents.  Censorship is completely retarded.

Stimutacs, start with Call of Cthulhu.  It really describes much of the Lovecraft lore.  It can be found on hplovecraft.com.

It's not too scary, but there are some parts that kind of surprise you.  Regarding books to read, I think any books by H.P. Lovecraft would work out.  I haven't read any, but it's mentioned in the game and my friends have read them.

Well, i just got the game.  I have a few complaints already, but the good outweigh the bad.  I just wish the game wasn't so damn dark.  I can't see a thing in the mansion.  I know it's supposed to be like that, but I had to make it brighter not becasue I was scared, but because i couldn't find the door! (or alot of enemies for that matter)

Battling is ok so far, but I'm not even up to casting magick, so I'm sure it will get better.  I seem to have a hard time targeting the enemy I want, so it makes it harder.  contrary to most everybody, i actually like the basic style of the enemies so far.

On a good note, I thought I had played for 15 minutes, and it ended up being 41 minutes (by the games clock), so at least it's captivating me.

I have a feeling this game will creep me out alot.
Title: RE: Just Finished Eternal Darkness. WOW!

Eternal Darkness has a gamma adjust built into it.  If you have a dark ass TV with no brightness control like I do, the feature is essential.  Just go to the options menu and turn up the gamma until you can see where you are going.

Targetting enemies isn't really that hard.  You just have to have an idea of what you want to do.  But if you've only been playing for 41 minutes, you probably haven't seen magick, and aren't past Ellia's stage yet.  Let's just say that the flavor of combat might be changing on you soon.

Post by: KnowsNothing on July 21, 2003, 11:40:11 AM
Yeah, I just started Ellia's stage and I haven't really done anything.  I used the built in gamma control (or as I call it "Brightness Thing") because although my TV has brightness controls, I finally got it perfect for games like Metroid Prime, and for regular TV shows and I didn't want to ruin.  I always have a hard time getting it right.

Title: RE: Just Finished Eternal Darkness. WOW!
Post by: Grey Ninja on July 21, 2003, 11:48:47 AM
When adjusting the gamma, I always watch the rocks carefully behind Alex, so that I can just barely make out the cracks.  The trick is in getting it bright enough to see, but still dark enough to keep the ambience of the game.
