Gotta go fast to hype those new Olympic sports

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/40346/mario-and-sonic-qualify-for-2016-rio-olympics-on-wii-u-and-3ds

As is now a tradition, Mario and Sonic characters will cross over in the world of sport for next summer's Olympics, as Mario and Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games was announced for both Wii U and 3DS today.

Among the sports shown in the Nintendo Direct video were the new Olympic sports of rugby sevens (shown on Wii U) and golf (3DS), as well as soccer, rhythmic gymnastics, beach volleyball and the traditional 100m dash. Several new characters have joined up, with Nabbit, Diddy Kong and Birdo on the Mario side and Rogue the Bat, Jet the Hawk and Zazz on the Sonic side.

No release date was given for the games in the video.

I still don't see how "rhythmic gymnastics" and synchronized swimming are in the Olympics, but REAL sports like baseball aren't.

Kind of funny that people in Rio won't be able to play the game.

I figured this series was going to continue, though my prediction was that it would be announced at E3.

Looks like they're finally adding some new stuff to the game, took them long enough!

I hope you're kidding and/or trolling with the "real sports" jab.

Either way, multiple factors. The sport's not popular in Europe, where IOC holds a strong influence. MLB is not willing to stop their season so the top players play like the NHL does. Softball being totally dominated by the US. I'm sure organisers don't like getting stuck with purpose-built baseball/softball stadiums they'll never use after the Olympics end.

Also, Birdo is not a playable character. You lied to me!

I'm pretty hyped for this release. I liked the first Wii U game for its events and unlockable goods. You'd unlock stuff for completing achievement-like goals, such as gear, equipment, costumes, and music. It was really fun to play with my older brother. I hope Sega keeps that unlockable system since it offered plenty of replay value and was addicting on top of that!

They can use soccer stadiums for baseball, just like football stadiums do (see the Raiders and Athletics). And baseball is a sport, rythmic gymnastics is mostly just twirling a ribbon, and synchronized swimming is not even close to a sport. There is a strong anti-American bias in the IOC. And so what if MLB will only let minor league baseball players participate? Some of the more popular Olympic sports use amatuer players (like boxing and skating). Plus, the fact that baseball is becoming even more popular in Japan (which is hosting the 2020 games), increases its chances of being brought back. Besides, rugby is now in the Olympics and that is popular is a handful of countries (mainly South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand).

I am glad Nintendo and Sega are continuing these

It'd be interesting if this game gets amiibo support - and a dedicated line of amiibo.

Sit down, man.

It bothers me greatly how huge the idea of a Mario and Sonic crossover is and yet all they use it for is this Olympic series that I couldn't give the slightest **** about.  They aren't even well regarded games.  And they're made by Sega and there isn't a sane gamer in existence that would ever defer to Sega over Nintendo for development duties in this day and age.

At least we got SSB Brawl.  Still we could get better.  Let's get some Kingdom Hearts kind of thing going with Mario and Sonic and have a dev that can actually make a half-decent game work on it.  There wasn't one damn kid in the world back in 1993 that when thinking about a potential Mario/Sonic game wanted some half-assed Olympics game.  No one.  This series is such a damn waste of probably the biggest dream crossover there is.

Of course Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy have been owned by the same company for over ten years and the crossover game anyone actually wants for those series hasn't happened either.  Is there some weird hangup over giving the fans the crossover they actually would want?  Capcom vs. SNK worked out great so it clearly can be done.
