Title: Board/Card Games that would translate well to Video Game format.
Post by: UncleBob on April 12, 2015, 08:58:10 PM
Yesterday was International TableTop day. I had fun at my FLGS - and I hope you did too!
Anyway, I got to thinking - we always get a version of Monopoly on virtually every console. There's often a chess/checkers game of some type released. Various card games. Uno was a big hit for XBL.
So, what are some board/card games you'd like to see get a digitized release?
I played Forbidden Island yesterday and it was a load of fun. I'd have to play it more, but I think it would translate well into a digital version.
Also a fan of Revolution and it would make a great DS title, for online or local play.

Merry Christmas.

My user name is RescueRaptor
OK, so technically this isn't really what Uncle Bob asked for, but hey it is over 100 table top games created in video game format.
I would like to see more games that have complex setups or customization in digital format to help play games faster.
Thunderstone, Dominion, Puerto Rico
Or table top strategy games like Warhammer, Heroclix, and what not created with a focus on giving players simple level creators.

Co-operative games like Pandemic1 or Ghost Stories2 would be excellent choices. Not sure about the former, but I know there is an excellent iOS implementation of the latter already available. (Actually, there are a good number of iOS implementations that would be good candidates.) Scotland Yard3 is another game that seems like an easy and fun fit for digital.
My personal wish, however, is that some hardcore wargames would come out. Stuff that most people probably haven't played like Paths of Glory4, We The People5, A Victory Lost6, or Warriors of God7. These games are long, very strategic, and often complicated experiences that could make excellent use of the Wii U interface. Depending on the game they could allow for online or local play, either asynchronous or in real-time. Single-player AI modes and/or challenges might be possible in some cases, although I'm guessing playing against other real people would be the big draw. Some games would work out better than others as digital conversions.
People already play these wargames on their computers with various tools (most notably VASSAL) but my guess is that it will stay that way - there just isn't a big enough install base to cater to these niche experiences on consoles, so it's probably not worth the effort of creating them. :(

ejamer is right about Pandemic (I haven't played the others).
I could see a game like Ticket to Ride fun as well, but I'm torn as to whether I'd want it to be a direct "board game" video game, or if we could see it evolved into something a little more fleshed-out. The idea of competing train lines fighting both based on cost & how they work the system to get competitive advantage in an effort to get the most amount of rail in the continent could be really neat.

I call it Safe Words and it's going to take the internet by storm.

I know there was a Penny Arcade joke about this, but it really seems ridiculous that some sort of pen-and-paper RPG program hasn't been released for the Wii U yet. Dungeon masters could sketch their maps in the program and host matches with other players. I think it would be neat.
I think that's the Kickstarter I really want to make.
