Title: Are there any games on Wii U that are not possible on PS360?
Post by: Nile Boogie Returns on February 02, 2015, 02:23:31 PM
I was just looking at Kirby and the Rainbow Curse ( 1080p 60 right?) with a sense of wonder at just how fluid and beautifully the game runs. While most of that is Art direction over technical prowess it got me to thinking about this topic. When I mean not possible I don't mean GamePad stuffs and the like, I mean would the game suffer considerably in playability if it were attempted on a 7th Hokage console.
Mario Kart 8 is the only thing that comes to mind but that may even be possible.
What say you?

Need For Speed: Most Wanted U.

I can't think of any games on the Wii U that couldn't run on the PS3 or 360 with some interface tweeks & perhaps some minor downgrading. Hell, the Wii U hasn't even managed a game as visually impressive as The Last of Us yet on the PS3.
Now, there are 2 games on the horizon that could potentially be dicey on the Wii U's contemporaries: Zelda U and Xenoblade Chronicles X. The PS3 never could run open world games very well while making them look good.

Need for Speed on Wii U did look and play better than on other systems. I thought they did an awesome job with the port...not the price however.(Stupid EA)
Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls are pretty impressive but I'm sure they could run on the Wii U without a hitch. (I'm not sure at all, Hell I'm not even sure if Bayonettta 2 compares to God Of War 3 in the graphics dept.)

Need for Speed on Wii U was great. The guys at Criterion were very vocal about how much they liked working on that hardware. I'm pretty sure that's why EA shut them down.

Mario Kart 8 would run just fine on XBox 360 or PS3. It's beautiful, but there are plenty of other racers that look better. Answer = no.

NES Remix
It would be tough to get the licensing.

I remember Frozenbyte stating they could do more effects in Trine 2 on the Wii U.
*shrugs* If that's the case, I didn't see it when I played Trine 2 on PS3, Wii U, & PS4. Looked like the same game across all 3 consoles. I don't doubt them, but whatever effects they added don't appear to be altogether noticeable.

Too bad they couldn't do more playtesting to save the game from suckage.
Scribblenauts Unlimited would be very cumbersome to play on a traditional controller. Even on PC with mouse and keyboard, it's rather cumbersome to play because it was designed for touch interface first.

Looks better than Mario Kart 8? I request screens and links and names.
Split/Second, in my opinion the best racing game on the PS3 & 360. Granted, it goes with a completely different art style than Mario Kart, but it has similar concepts and runs very well despite the track constantly getting blown up.

I've played Split/Second on PC. It's nothing special in terms of graphics. Maybe it's because i'm a spoiled PC guy, so i take 1080 60fps for granted... To really impress me one also needs to apply some great art design over dry math of resolutions (like DMC4 that i consider the best looking game i played).
But it definitely is a neat game and recommended checking it out. It was recently added to Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/297860/?l=russian) (after spending years on Disney's proprietary digital store) and my hand was hovering over it a few times but i ultimately decided against it.
I wished it supported more than two players and events could get a bit stale after a few races but it's a cool game.

For the record Mario Kart 8 runs at 720p.

I actually argue Wonderful 101 and also Pikmin. They both can have a lot going on and are also pretty nice looking games.

Pikmin 3 is a solid answer. That game is stunning in a few areas.

60fps seems to be something the Wii U can manage more then the 360 or PS3

How does one recognize a framerate? Like I can tell if a game is running chunky but that's probably a pretty low framerate. It would have to be like the SNES's infamous slowdown. I could probably spot something if I saw two games back-to-back or if you took a game I was currently playing and suddenly lowered the framerate on me. But I can't look at a game cold and say "that's running at 60 fps". Have I just not "learned" to recognize it or is deep down everyone kind of full of it when they spot it?

Use chrome and look at the Kirby Rainbow Curse videos on youtube, they have an option for 1080p 60, and its pretty easy to tell the difference.
Also, I'm not sure Kirby Rainbow Curse is altogether possible on older systems. The IQ is incredible and moves like silk. (Art direction and GamePad understood)

that just proves the VIDEO is running at 60 FPS not the actual game, that proves nothing.

I could be wrong but I'm thinking that if a video is playing at 60fps but the source is only 30fps, the video won't "upscale" or "hypothesize" the missing frames. If Kirby was 30frames per and Youtube "filled in the blanks" wouldn't the video be twice as fast?

Youtube wouldn't allow to to have a video that was only 30fps be marked for 60fps because its more work for them and bandwidth. The video was captured at 60fps but in the case of video games and anything digital really. The further you get off from what Native is the more weird it looks.

Running a 30FPS source video at 60FPS would be the same as playing a 30FPS game on a TV. You would just have double the frames for no reason and it would look the same. If you can't tell the difference between 30 and 60 then you need to see a neurologist. It's blatantly obvious, always. Play Mario Kart in single player, then do 4 player split screen, that's the difference.

Well I'm sure I can see the difference if I watch one right after the other like your Mario Kart example but could you do it cold? Like if I just thrust a game in your face you could spot the framerate with no reference?
As for youtube, most movies are shot at 24 fps. If you couldn't convert that to a different framerate without altering the appearance then every movie clip would look sped up on youtube but it doesn't. The video conversion fills in the blanks.

The 60fps isn't available for non-digital media (only video games, pixar-ish flicks and the like). However, I do believe there is a 48fps option coming for movie that are shot in that format later in 2016.

Add Xenoblade X to this list. I'm convinced this game would make blue smoke in my 360

You're totally right. The 360 could never handle open-world RPGs with online play, massive file size all while running 720p and (what will most likely be) 30fps.

I don't even know what he's trying to say. Anything can be recorded at 60FPS, provided that the hardware supports it. What does Pixar have to do with anything?

I'm saying that "Youtube 60FPS" was designed for Video Game and digital media and not traditional film since traditional Film is shot at 24/48fps and would not benefit from this feature. Pixar was used to denote digital media from a non-video game example.

traditional film is SHOT at 24 fps but converted to 60 for Blu Ray all the time. 24p is optional but not mandatory in the blu ray spec. Digital film is an entirely different thing, Pixar is no different than Rocky, or any other film its generated on a computer and PRINTED to film and then the digital intermediate is used to make a digital copy for the Blu Ray release. Youtube did not create their 60FPS for video games that is asinine. Television has been shot hit and miss at 60 fps since the late 90's so there is that also.
