Title: Did we ever get a game based on the secret levels in Mario Sunshine?
Post by: Nile Boogie Returns on January 08, 2015, 11:55:00 PM
So my daughter found Super Mario Sunshine in the bottom of a scuzy duffle bag. She wanted to play and the only Mario games she knows are on Wii U and 3DS. So I goes in to the closet, dust of the GameCube and we away we go. Anyway, we're going through the first few shines and we get to the "Hillside Cave Secret" (you know, the ones with no waterpak ) I remember thinking back then that there should be a game based on just these levels. Then I remembered that was to be the case a few years later. What ever happened to that game. Did it evolve into Mario Galaxy? Did it get scalped? I wish I could find the thread on here about it but no luck.
and I died 19x on the first level. 12 years ago I 100% this game. The suckle creeps in with age!

I'm pretty sure that was what turned into Mario Galaxy.

considering Twisty Trials Galxy from SMG2 is pretty much ripped directly out of Super Mario Sunshine, I'd say that this game you're thinking of got turned into Super Mario Galaxy.

I shutter to think how bad I be at Mario Sunshine right now but, I would buy an HD Remake of it with fixed Camera. I buy it at launch if they got rid of Bowser Jr. from it.

It's much harder to me now than either Galaxy or 3Dworld right now. Some of the Shines are still fairly easy but those stages with no water pak are brutal. Maybe the gamecube controller stick is more sensitive than the wii/u cause this Mario just does what he wants. Graphically it holds up pretty for a 12 year old game. HD would get bought so fast (if it's packed with 64 and SMG 1&2)

*shrug* I rather have a remake of the DS Remake of Mario 64.

Yeah, I want to pick up the Mario 64 DS game but just know that we will probably be getting a port of that sometime soon. The 20 year anniversary is next year and there are also the rumors of the Re-U-magined N64 titles.

Mario 64 DS or any of the good DS games updated on Wii U would be nice, for some reason I sort of expected that to be the norm considering the touch pad and all but it seems like Nintendo really can't get anything right these days.

I never get why people ask for ports of non-rare titles that they almost certainly already own a copy of. If you want Super Mario 64 it's on the Virtual Console and the DS version is playable on a 3DS. So the game is playable on both of Nintendo's current videogame systems.
Did Nintendo actually promise a Mario game based on the fludd-less levels of Sunshine back in the day? I agree that Galaxy seems the most similar. The levels are largely linear and the space theme is pretty similar to the general void of the "secret" levels in Sunshine. Of course since fludd only appears in one Mario game isn't almost everything else like those levels? The fludd levels are the exception in the grand scheme of the series.
I remember some of those "secret" levels were really hard. Lots of loud swearwords could be heard from my room when I would play one of those. One thing Sunshine did poorly that 64 did right is that you couldn't break the sequence on shine order so if you got stuck you couldn't get a later shine from the same area to pad your totals. In 64 you could usually collect stars that you hadn't formally unlocked yet and that let you skip parts you had trouble with. With Sunshine if you were on one of those secret levels the game just halted and you beat it or your whole game was pretty much over. I really didn't like that since practically all of those levels were hard and often killed you with wonky camera angles. Sunshine is kind of an odd game for me as I played the **** out of it but don't know if I was ever truly having a good time doing so.

Mario 64 DS added a decent amount of content and improved the game significantly, and people would like to have all of that but also be able to control it with an actual analog stick.

Yep, that's the reason.

I'm pretty sure they at least implied it. We had a thread about it back then I just can't find it. I never played Mario64ds since I hated the controls and now I think its crazy expensive (or still full price even used)

I think those levels are just the inspiration for Super Mario Galaxy so maybe that's what you heard and you're just getting the details mixed up in your memory. Memory is a fickle thing and is never 100% accurate.
I wouldn't mind seeing a remake of Super Mario Sunshine, but it would be a lot of work to fix its issues. It isn't just a simple matter of fixing the control and camera, but they'd have to alter all those coin stars to cut down on the tedium. If they added in the cut worlds to replace the blue and red coins, then it could be a great game.
But with that kind of effort needed, I'd rather just see a sequel.

One game that is carrying on the spirit of the secrect levels in Mario Sunshine is a Hat in Time. I just hope that game will eventually comes out of alpha.

I can't speak for everyone but I don't have any model of DS and I already have the original on N64 but that doesn't change the fact that porting the DS game to Wii U would still make more sense than not as it could be done in HD something the previous ports lack, and it can allow people who don't have a DS of any sort a chance to revisit that version of the game, plus the mini games were fun, they need to bring those back for the Wii U at the very least.
This whole attitude of Nintendo support sucks so pick up the handheld is lame, not everyone likes portable gaming either so it makes sense to have games that appeal to both groups on both consoles.
:EDIT:
Back on topic, I was thinking the same thing someone else said, aren't *ALL* Mario games just like those levels anyways? I mean not just like but it seemed like Mario Sunshine was different and those were supposed to be the familiar Mario levels? I never played Galaxies even though I did just buy it recently maybe I will pop it in and try it out. Does Wii U support Off TV Play for Wii games?

I'm sure Nintendo would never do it but having a 3D Mario HD collection would be awesome. I have all of the original games but the convenience of not having to hook up old systems and graphics that are updated would sell me on it.
Off-TV play for the Wii lets you use the Gamepad as your screen but you still have to use the Wii controllers to control the game.

The camera in Sunshine is ace, much better than the camera in Galaxy was, that's for sure.

I don't know if I ever had any problems with the camera in Galaxy. Sunshine on the other hand...

I don't remember having any horrible issues with the camera in Sunshine. Maybe it's been too long to remember properly but all that I remember having issues with were the super hard secret levels and Yoshi dissolving in water. Yoshi was mishandled in that game.

I never even got to Yoshi, I couldn't get past the first of those secret levels and I always got frustrated and quite the game. To be fair though I been playing it on a laptop and that is not the ideal situation, using a PS2 style controller also. If I could get a gamecube for a reasonable price and the game cheap I would play it properly then I never have time to play the games I have anyways so its not looking good.

How does the ps2 handle the Gamecube click feature on the triggers?

I stole this image off of Phil's website (which he stole from Gamespot) This is the section that had the nightmare camera issues. It was a 90 degree angle off the back of the amusement park if I remember correctly.

I vaguely remember the back of the amusement park level. This game is certainly deserving of a new run-through by me.

That's the spot. The camera made it nigh impossible. It was like playing the game blind. There are a few other spots. If that wasn't in the game probably say nothing about the camera. Most of the time its pretty good.

Yeah, I never get the blanket camera statements about Sunshine. There are maybe 2 or 3 spots where something went wrong, but overall it just introduced a pretty radical (for the time) lack of camera AI, making moving it part of the texture of the gameplay. I can see not liking that approach, but it's not broken, and at this point many, many contemporary games require constant camera babysitting. Nintendo completely reversed course with the Mario franchise, obviously.

I do think one of the most underrated accomplishments of EAD Tokyo's Mario games is how well the camera works with little or no babysitting. 3D Land/World are kind of designed in a way where that's not an issue, but Galaxy was really well done, and pretty much had to be with the limitations of the controller it had to work with.

I know for me that when the Camera was bad it was uberly frustratingly bad. That being said though its up there in the most enjoyable Mario game that I've played when I played it.
It probably top that list for the one I enjoyed most playing totally alone.

I remember Mario Sunshine's camera would show ?'s for items you couldn't see if the camera angle put a wall in front. While I'm sure Nintendo thought they were very clever to come up with that, about 10 seconds after encountering it the first time I thought "why not instead just make the wall become transparent if I can't see my character?" What good it is it to only sort of but not truly see what's going on? Clearly Nintendo recognized that sometimes the camera angle screws everything up but why did they only half fix it?
