Title: 3DS Homebrew channel for 3DS release on Nov. 22nd
Post by: ObbyDent on November 17, 2014, 11:27:41 PM
The game to perform the exploit is Cubic Ninja. Grab the game while it's still cheap!
The guy who made the exploit claims that it will prevent people from being able to rub backups and pirated games but we all know that eventually someone will crack it. In the meantime, we will be able to enjoy region-unlocked 3DS consoles and some sort of homebrew gaming, one of which is Minecraft ported to the 3DS.

As if the 3ds wasn't getting enough "stability" updates.

Oddly enough, I already own Cubic Ninja. Got it for $3 at a K-Mart on clearance. :D

Refresh my memory, please, by explaining why homebrew is important?

Region-locked consoles are a dumb fucking idea.

Because homebrew developers can create their own games and programs too.

wat
Region free and homebrew development is huge, brah so is eventual piracy

Region free isn't that big a deal to me. At the most, there are like 2 games on a Nintendo system that I'd want to play but don't come to N/A which I'd have to get from Europe or Japan. I can live with that.
I've never looked into any homebrew applications or games. Heck, I don't even really keep up with Nintendo's output of games so I've hardly looked into or bought any indie games because of it so homebrew games are even further out from my sphere of interest/need.
As for piracy, no interest there and I don't engage in it.

This'd probably be risky to try in the early goings depending on things like how Nintendo try to block it with updates, so I'll wait and see how it turns out over time. I might be interested in it if they do some of the cool things that were on the Wii, such as changing the controls in games and making custom Mario levels.

It can't and won't be blocked. The exploit is not done at an OS level, but through buffer overload from a save file on Cubic Ninja. Not only that, the developers of Cubic Ninja went bankrupt in 2011 so there's no one to even patch the game itself. It's even compatible with the New 3DS, which is only out in Japan so far. The most Nintendo will be able to do is block the sale of the game on the eShop (which is only in Japan, btw).

Nintendo could always update the system so that the game simply won't run. Sucks for the three people who purchased the game though. ;)

I dunno, the sales of the game jumped like 2000% once it was announced as the source of the exploit. Hell, EB Games (Australia) is yanking it from sale. (http://www.vooks.net/3ds-homebrew-means-people-actually-care-about-cubic-ninja-now/)
It's available on the eShop in Japan only, so that'll probably go down pending an update (happens a lot with PSP stuff).

Okay, so the three people who bought the game before this hack was announced. :D

Yeah, I'm sure there are things Nintendo can do to stop it if they truly want to. Time will tell.

I don't know if Nintendo would go that far out of their way to kill it until it's able to actually pirate current games.

There are a bunch of exploits for the Wii and even the Wii U (in Wii mode) that work (essentially) the same way, through a buffer overflow. They have not been patched (for the most part).

Yeah but the 3ds firmware seems to be much more rewritable.

Based on what?

It's not firmware, that bugs me about everything. People call everything firmware - iPhone updates, Android updates, PS4, Xbone, etc - notice the people who never call them firmware updates: the manufacturers, because they are not firmware updates. /mini rant
I'm not even sure what you're trying to say there, all of the consoles have flash system storage and their system software can be updated, they would be obsolete within months of launch if they couldn't.

The exploit is out, two days early. I won't link it here in case I can get banned for it.

What, you, banned? I can't imagine how that would happen.

Just ordered Cubic Ninja on eBay. No interest in piracy (honestly I never even play anything on my 3DS), just want to try my hand at writing my own code. Maybe a "flash card" type math game for my daughter.

I saw there's a guy making a Virtual Boy emulator for it, which seems like the most logical thing to do.
