Title: I have a prediction... (Simpsons Marathon Discussion)
Post by: BranDonk Kong on August 20, 2014, 10:30:40 PM
...at least two people will die trying to stay up for the entire Simpsons marathon (12 days, 24 hours a day) on FXX. Starts tomorrow at 10 am.

I'd try to do it if I didn't have to work and such.
I actually put thought into it. You figure, there's 8 minutes of commercials every half hour - 16 minutes every hour - a little over six hours of commercials a day.
If you DVR'd it and were to fast-forward through the commercials, you could do it.

You know someone, somewhere is going to try and make it through with this (http://i.imgur.com/e6iaA1B.jpg) as their sole food source.

100 tacos for 100 dollars is a steal though. That would go good with some tomacco.

I was going to stop by Charter and get a DVR just for this occasion then I remembered how insane their DVR prices are and decided **** it I can just wait till the DVD's drop in price.

Yeah, I was going to say, the DVDs are the much less expensive option in the long term, and also don't include commercials, but do feature some pretty great commentary tracks from writers/cast members.

of all the cable companies I have ever had I HATE Charter the most. But to be fair Cable One was pretty bad too. I miss DirecTV but their internet sucks and charter internet is not worth it without the cable so its a bitch no matter what you do. I normally buy most shows on DVD anyways unless it is something I can get on Netflix like That 70's Show which I had on DVD but sold when I needed gas money because Netflix has it.

It's easy to forget since it hasn't been for 15-20 years, but oh man, this show used to be so fucking good.

The Monorail episode is really overrated. It’s great, but I wouldn’t even call it the best one Conan wrote, let alone of the series.

Hm. I'd be hard pressed to pick the best single episode of The Simpsons.

Homer at the Bat would probably be pretty high up there though.

From my years of watching the show, I settled on "Homer's Enemy" as being the best episode of The Simpsons. Top to bottom a solid episode that doesn't need to veer into some of the crazy territory that others would get to with a simple conflict that is perfectly ended.

Seriously? I was just taking a look at The Simpsons Wiki to see if I was mistaken about naming Homer's Enemy as my favorite episode (and there are some other good contenders like Homie the Clown) but I also checked to see what episodes Conan wrote and he only wrote 3: New Kid on the Block (where Bart falls in love with the neighbor girl but she loves Jimbo), Homer goes to College (where he dorms with the group of nerds) and Marge vs. The Monorail. I'd go with the Monorail episode as his best work.

I'd definitely take Homer Goes to College over it.
That one's coming up in a little over an hour, 11:30 Eastern. It'd be on my shortlist for best ever.
Man, the thing I always forget about and laugh the most at is when Smithers and Burns go through all the security to turn off the power and end up at the room with the screen door half off and a stray dog standing there. And as ridiculous as that is, Burns kicking the dog in the face to shoo it away just kills me.

My favorite part of it by far is Grampa's rambling "onion on my belt" story, but there are so many classic moments in that episode.

We can run this plant ourselves!
Sigh. Classic Simpsons.
I will say this though. While the show is on another level in its first, let's be generous and say 8 - 10 seasons, for a show that's been on for 23 years, it still makes me laugh. Sure, the newer stuff isn't as good as what has come before. Yet, for a show that's been on the air so long, it is surprisingly still funnier than a lot of newer shows and programs that have debuted and aired in the decades it has been on. Maybe that's a sad state of the industry but the show can still do a pretty great episode once in awhile and when I do catch a new one here or there, it does still keep me entertained so I'm not going to slam the later seasons. They just have a really hard act to follow.

Cape Feare is maybe the best Sideshow Bob episode, and I'd say that's a pretty high bar. In what seems like decades ago I came across a web forum that had done polls to find the best episode of each season and then pitted them against each other to pick the best ever, and it was in the final against You Only Move Twice, an episode that you might be able to infer from my current avatar is one I'm very fond of. I always like that pairing as well, as the title of You Only Move Twice is a subtle reference to Cape Feare.

I already stopped watching midway through Season 4, I guess I had been away from it too long nothing seemed as funny as I remembered.

A bit of a stretch to put this in here, but I don't think there's anywhere better: If you’re a fan of The Simpsons and haven’t read John Swartzwelder’s novels, you really should. Some of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.
