Title: Anyone read/write fanfiction?
Post by: Oblivion on May 17, 2014, 12:52:06 PM
I used to love a good fanfiction story a couple years back when I was hardcore into the Avatar: the Last Airbender fandom. I recently came across MasterGhandalf again, an AMAZING writer with some good AU stories for Avatar or other shows. Seeing his stuff again has rekindled my old love for fanfiction and I was wondering if anyone on here had any recommendations for some good fanfiction for anything at all, or even something you've written yourself. I myself am a big fan of AU or "sequel" FF.
Considering the people here, I can bet that a grand total of like one person probably does, but I figured I would ask anyway.

Does Fox News count? It's historical fan fiction.

When I got on the internet for the first time back in... 96? One of the first things I read was Highlander fan fiction on usenet.

There was one where the immortal shot off the other immortal's head with a machine gun because he wasn't from olden times. And another one where Batman was Highlander and another one I think where the X-files investigate. They weren't completely terrible.
Typing this make me miss Usenet. It was nice when the internet wasn't all WWW.

I too did like Shyguy and used to read Fancitions all over usenet. Unlike Shyguy I do not miss usenet, no amount of nostalgia would make me want to go back to the dark ages of the internet.
I also am a writer in real life and I do fanfiction of all sorts. Mostly Star Wars, Freddy Kruger, Transformers, X-Men, Doctor Who, and now that Psych is over I might try to tackle that just for the hell of it.

You could find the answer to any technical question on Usenet, it was a good resource for computer issues.
You used to be able to download files from FTP sites instead of file hosting services with a dozen "download now" ads trying to trick you into a getting a virus.

I am going to dodge that one because there are too many things to say. I did however once win a fanfiction contest on alt.toys.transformers.classic.moderated once upon a time.

When i often have no time for real deal, i'm not gonna bother with fanfics.
Though i think i remember reading a page of two of that MasterGandalf person, i think it was ATLA/Star Trek TNG thing. it was okay i guess.
Also i remember reading a few unofficial continuations of LOTR (not fanfiction technically because those were actual books published on paper). One dealt with seven rings of Nazgul (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ring_of_Darkness_(Nick_Perumov)) and how someone used their power, it was pretty trashy (mary sue-ish Frodo clone and his two dwarf friends becoming orc slaughtering machine). The other one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Ringbearer) twisted original LOTR story on it's head and turned it into more of a spy thriller (think le Carre or Robert Harris). It was very, very good.

Well as an aspiring writer I do it more as an exorcise when I am in a rut. I like to write my own fiction but sometimes I will start with a fanfiction and then once I get inspired I will either adapt it into something my own or scrap it and pick out the good bits. I don't share them with other people outside that one time I did to win a contest.

I really don't understand why anyone would want to read non-pornographic fan fiction.
