Title: They found E.T
Post by: marvel_moviefan_2012 on April 27, 2014, 10:36:43 AM

I know not very exciting for most people but I think it is very exciting that they actually solidified decades old myths about an obscure game nobody played. Not that it matters but I actually liked this game as a kid, until I played better games that is which is strange because I actually didn't care for the movie much.

Should've left it buried.

That comment section is just a complete riot.

I remember someone else did this years ago. There were photos on the internet.

Good. Now people can finally shut up about that goddamn landfill and go chasing after the next urban legend.

Seriously, it's cool that they found them and proved the legend true, but at the end of the day it's just a landfill filled with one of the shittiest games ever made.  But truly, "IT BELONGS IN A MUSEUM!"

Could get a bit political.

*looks up Polybius*

Yeah...OK, that'll do. On a side note, I think this E.T. landfill find was a fake. The cartridges they found were in way too good of condition for having been buried in a landfill for 30 years, and there were too few of them if they were that intact. Plus, I vaguely remember Atari once saying they had those cartridges sliced up and ground into scrap before disposal, so why did they find intact cartridges?

Still, if it makes people stop chasing after the legend like it was the frickin' Ark of the Covenant, I can live with this "discovery".

I've seen several other photos from the dig site that lead me to believe this was it.  Crushed shipping boxes full of games and more.

The story was never that they were "shredded" - just that they were steamrolled and paved over.  It's feasible that, in the dry desert, under cement, it'd still be in decent (although crushed) condition, with stuff near the bottom holding up decently.

Keep in mind, most of the photos ran by the various news sites are of good-ish looking stuff because... well, it's a landfill.  It makes for a better article to show a guy holding up a mostly in-tact cart rather than something like:

Now that's a better photo.

Hopefully they will pile up all the Atari stuff they found and snap photos of that.

This was a pretty cool find to me.  I always remembered that landfill being a running joke more than an urban legend, but it's awesome to find out that it's true.

So, what do they do with all the junk now?  Put it in another landfill?  Recreate the landfill in a museum?  Burn it?

People will have the privilege of recreating the ET landfill in their own hometowns. (totally stole that joke from Idle Thumbs)
