Title: Is this RACIST, stupid or funny?
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on April 21, 2014, 07:52:58 PM
slippery slope thread. here we go.

Seriously though. In a discussion regarding Wizards in Action Fantasy movies (such as Conan The Barbarian, Red Sonia, etc etc) someone made a suggestion and i made a reply.

Would you considered this racist? just stupid? or mildly funny?

I wouldn't say it's that offensive, but it's way too forced to really be funny.

Which option is for "Meh, not really funny. Not sure if it's racist"?

Sorta mildly racist. Not even remotely funny.

actually I do have a semi-serious racism related question. If a white person where to make a rap song talking about how bad Racism used to be in the US and references the KKK and uses the N word and the W word that rhymes with it in this context where the words are used both ironically and as a reference to the period, would that be acceptable or does that count as racist?

If you have to ask, it's racist.

If you're a white person, the only way it's acceptable for you to use the N word is if you're reading from a copy of Huck Finn.  Also, the "W" word you're referring to 1) doesn't have the historical context that the N word does, and 2) is typically used in a joking or teasing fashion.

I remember a CNN segment which had the on-screen headline: "Which word is worse? The N-word or cracker?"

Ummm... probably the one you didn't spell out, geniuses.

One of my favorite stand-ups has a bit on that. A network wouldn't him put the word "midget" on TV because it was "as bad as the n-word." As he argues, if you're trying to decide which of two words is worse, and you won't even say on of them, that one's worse.

If you have to ask, it's racist.

Explain. If it is a song being done as an artistic expression and is representative of the struggle how is that racist? The song is anti-racism and attacks the KKK and other hate groups. Also who gets to decide what is racist or insensative, I can accept something being insensative but think it is wrong to assume it is because of racism especially if the speaker is not racist.

In your rhetorical scenario, what does this magical song gain by including the usage of the N-word, especially if you're non-black?

Sensitivity is about considering how others may perceive the way you interact with others.  Isn't it insensitive to say the N word then, if it's clear most people will feel offended by its usage?
