Title: What are your favorite video game soundtracks?

Hopefully this topic hasn't been done to death, but I am always fascinated by video game music. I enjoy doing some compositions of my own that are inspired by what I hear in games.
I tend to enjoy Eastern game soundtracks more. Perhaps that's not fair to say. I guess I'll revise that by saying I like soundtracks in the types of games that don't try to be movies. Said games don't have much in the way of melodic structure, and focus more on ambiance and accentuating action. Indie games prove me wrong immediately, as does the Rayman series, for instance.

Ambient music is the worst thing that happened to videogame soundtracks. It's more akin to doing a mere sound effects that work for one specific moment in the game rather than doing music pieces that have worth by themselves.
Another thing is western composers have started to forget the importance of easily recognizable melodical leitmotifs. There are some exceptions though:
Bryan Tyler is a composer so good, his OST for "Children of Dune" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGYiX1beDlk) became more famous than rather middling tv series. Recently, he also did music for Ass 4: The Black Flag, and it's very good and i found myself whistling theme tune while i was going to work which always a good sign that it's good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JudtkSaTuE

Modern King's Bounty games were okay and in general their music was okay if too generic fantasy, BUT that one track really stood out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jyDFm_FTws I remember when i came to the elf forest, heard this melody and just stopped playing right there, listening to it completely in awe. And THEN lady started singing...

It was conscious decision from Kamiya to make the music "more feminine": as in less or no drums and piano track DOMINATING everything giving the music elegant feel.

A good mix of East and West in there, I think. Note that I love the Legend of Zelda music, but there isn't any one game in the series whose soundtrack I favor more than the others so I view that series more as an aggregate (especially since they all remix each other's music fairly frequently).

I'd pick Ocarina among the Zelda series, but that may just be because of when I played it. I do really love the Ballad of the Wind Fish, though.

Rock Band has the best soundtrack (a little unfair though), but the best song from a video game is Gerudo Valley from Ocarina of Time.

I liked Donkey Kong Country's soundtrack so much that I did the code to access the sound test and attempted to make my own soundtrack by holding a tape recorder up to the TV speaker. This was an old TV and the SNES was connected using R/F. It didn't work out and I abandoned the idea after one song as the whole thing sounded like crap. No kidding. Funny to think that now I can access any game soundtrack I want on Youtube.
For other examples, Chrono Cross has some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard and it came in this great middle time period where we had CD quality audio but the composers were still relying on catchy hooks like they did in the chiptune era. A big reason why those old games have catchy music is that you couldn't do anything else and have it sound half decent. Now you can do anything so they can make more subtle atmospheric music. In the Playstation era they had not quite caught on to that so you get a more old school style with modern sound quality.
Secret of Mana's intro brings tears to my eyes.

Agreed. Kirby's Epic Yarn's soundtrack is exceptionally good.
This is still my favourite track from that game. At the 1:00 mark, that music still gives me chills.

Yes! Lava Landing is one of my favorite tracks. Its reliance on the piano solely for both melody and accompaniment is fantastic! I love the melody, too!

Mine were Mystic Cave in Sonic 2 on Genesis Super Castlevania 4 main theme first level music, Super Mario World Super Mario Bros 3 underground theme most of the music from FF7 everything from Turrican the main title screen theme and the attic theme from Nightmare on Elm Street NES the opening music from SMB 2 the original Zelda theme and the Link to the Past music was all pretty great. Donkey Kong Arcade, and DCK music Mortal Kombat Pit MK 1 Genesis version Mortal Kombat 2 entire arcade soundtrack Pac-Man not the music just the sounds, like it better than Ms. Pac-Man even though I like Ms. Pac-Man more as a game. the music from TMNT Arcade (first one not Turtles in Time)

I adore the Beyond Good and Evil soundtrack. 'Course, I adore most everything about that game.
I liked the Zack and Wiki soundtrack. Pity I never got the full torrent before I stopped doing things like that.
Mario 64 and Shadows of the Empire were also great. I have the CD for Shadows somewhere in my stack of random music discs. I really need to get around to ripping all of my eclectic physical CDs.
