Title: PS4 web browser
Post by: tendoboy1984 on March 25, 2014, 03:46:31 PM
It's a nice improvement over the PS3's, but you can't even use the touchpad to control the mouse pointer. Surprisingly, the Wii U's browser is faster than the PS4's, despite the Wii U being significantly less powerful. How is that possible?

I've had the PS4 since launch and haven't actually used the browser yet. I think my experience of the Wii browser sullied my opinion of all console browsers.

The Wii U's browser is a huge improvment. The Wii U is a lot more powerful than the original Wii, so the browser is faster, plus the GamePad's touchscreen makes navigating and entering text much easier.

Wii U browser is pretty cool (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=40269.0). Spend notable time on it just browsing internet (including reading and posting on NWR).
majority of porn sites works totally fine on Wii U and headphone jack is a godsend

I don't think I've ever used the PS4's web browser, but keep in mind once you get to a certain point, CPU speed doesn't really affect how fast a web browser can display a page, it's about the framework used, etc.

As a software developer who did develop a rudimentary browser for my graduation project and can speak from some experience, browser is rather CPU intensive during the initial rendering process and when doing javascript stuff but even more than CPU it requires a lot of RAM.
Which is curious because as we all know Wii U is even more constrained there compared to PS4.

I thought it the WiiU browser was using a specific tailored version of Webkit. *looks real quick* Yeah, its suppose to be Netfront which is based off of Webkit.
But I agree. You get that initial burst of data from the page where the browser is trying to figure out what to do and then afterwards pages are mostly static.
