Title: Who would be interested in a real-life forum get-together?
Post by: Khushrenada on March 24, 2014, 02:25:42 PM
It's a rather odd question for me to ask since I generally try and put as little of my personal information out on the internet. Yet, of all things, here I am trying to start a topic about us forum users gathering together to meet each other in a weekend of gaming frivolity.
What I'm thinking is this: We find out who wants to participate. Then we pick a date and location that is as finacially as reasonable as possible. Then we meet up and game on.
This isn't something to do right away. I'm thinking 8 months to a year away. That will allow people a chance to save up and to hammer out some details. But that might allow for a larger contingent to join and make this a big success.
Wouldn't you like to have do some 8 player Mario Kart: Double Dash? Or an 8 player Mario Party 7? Or any Mario Party for that matter. Smash Bros. Fortune Street. Heck, even just showcasing gaming skills.
We could dine out a bit, find out how little we have in common, be disappointed in meeting the real life counterparts behind the avatars, vow to never do it again. It'll be great!
So, for now, I'll kick the tires and see who's interested. Sign-up below.
Interested:
Khushrenada (Obviously the headliner for this act) Ceric Oblivion BlacknMild2k1 Insanolord Unclebob Stratos Stogi

I go again but, only if there is Faceball :P: . This time I won't feel so bad and not have a possible baby on the way and the snowstorm...

I would love to do this, but I don't know if I could.

I think it would make more sense to meet at a convention and just meet up that way, organizing a meeting on a web forum is not a smart idea, just saying.

Why not!?
We can all meet in Unclebob's basement like last time.... I'd tell you to ask everyone else that was there.... but they haven't posted since that day.... they haven't been back on the internet since that day.... :creepy evil grin:

I might be interested. I don't really have the means to easily get to wherever it'd be, but if we're talking a year from now I should. UncleBob's thing always sounded like fun.

You know, it's funny. A friend of mine just got a "clubhouse" - it's a nice, built in shed that the previous owner used for drinking and playing cards. We've been fixing it up and put a nice, flat panel TV in, replaced the carpet (the old stuff smelled heavily of smoke), bought a pool table... Great timing, eh? :D

Maybe, but I'd be hoping to round up say 20-25 people for this and I'm not sure that sounds big enough. Plus,
We can all meet in Unclebob's basement like last time.... I'd tell you to ask everyone else that was there.... but they haven't posted since that day.... they haven't been back on the internet since that day.... :creepy evil grin:
there's been stories.......

Actually, it's plenty big. We're thinking it'd make great for NYE parties. Currently has a futon, couch, two recliners, a card table with four chairs and a church pew (which is probably going to be replaced with some cool chairs from an old theater if he goes to pick them up). There's a little bar counter, stove, refrigerator, bathroom... and this is just in the front half. There's a back half, but it's sooooo full of the previous owner's junk, we haven't dared to do anything back there yet. ;)
But, if there's a more centrally located place, by all means. ;)

Well, sign me up! I could arrange something where my wife goes to visit her long time friend in California. Could be fun.
Where are we thinking about doing this?
Title: Re: Who would be interested in a real-life forum get-together?

I was thinking about doing it in some central location like North Dakota. Maybe if people wanted to road trip, it would only take a couple days driving or something. However, I figured I'd wait and see who is interested and whereabouts the particpants mainly live. For instance, if it is a majority of west coasters than it would make sense to have the location more westerly and vica-versa.
Guess, I'll start making a lits of who is interested. I'm going to say the magic number is 20 people. If that happens, then we can start more serious planning.

I'm currently in Nebraska which is close to North Dakota, and I am always but for a road trip, but I don't know any of you well enough to meet total strangers from over the internet. But I have always wanted to go to a gaming or sci-fi type convention thing so maybe that is more for me.

PAX East sold out so fast this last time. The year I did go, I didn't get to hang out with anyone other than who I went with.
The Uncle Bob Basement Adventure was fun. I'd like to do it again. Only more embarrassing photos need to come out of it. Right Ceric?

If you have a car, you should just go get a license. take lessons if you need some practice. The written portion of the test is harder than the driving portion.

Well I'd be down (depending on where and when of course). I've been on these forums for so damn long that it would be weird to ignore a potential meet up and crack a few back, play some games, and joke around.
Just prepare to get whoooped

I'd love to do an Australian visit. Maybe if this thing actually takes off and is successful, we'll do NWR Meet-up 2: 'Ello Bruce! in Australia. Most likely not but keep hope alive I guess. Plus, with Lucariofan and Dasmos putting up a couple people, that solves lodging for a few. It's like we're halfway there already.

That reminds me. Did you successfully do some Couch surfing here in the States?
I'm pretty sure that was RAB, I haven't been to the states as of yet. One day, everybody, one day.

Here's an idea - Why not have two meet-ups, one in the states, one down under. Have them at the same time (which might be hard to work the details out), but have a constant Skype cam going between the two locations and have something like Mario Kart and such so we can play online vs. each other.
International NWR Meet-up!

It'd be neat if we had large TVs and HD web cams that made "portals" between here and there. ;)
Title: Re: Who would be interested in a real-life forum get-together?
Post by: Dasmos on April 06, 2014, 11:33:41 PM
That would be a lot of fun, but I'm pretty sure all the members are fairly spread out over here. For instance there's about 3.5 thousand km's between RAB and I.
Maybe we could just all join in via the Interwebs from wherever we happen to be.

kms? What's that, 30 miles or something? ;)
Seriously, though, I'd say we're in a similar boat here in the US, with folks in New York, Florida and on the west coast...

isn't there a multi-user video chat program out there that's easy to setup and use?
I've seen it but don't remember what it was called. Some people can meet up, start the group chat, and everyone else that couldn't meet up and set up their own webcams and join in.

I'm always down to see you guys. Sign me up. Though getting around and doing some real traveling has been a lot harder since my daughter was born.
If people collect for E3 or San Diego Comicon at Nintendo's Lounge I could easily do that and bring everyone back to my place. Still sign me up and lets see what happens.

And now you're going on my list of enemies. Which I copied from Nixon, America's Greatest President.
I can't believe this was over 2 years ago. (Thought it was longer.) Was just thinking about it a couple weeks ago. What a coincidence.
