Title: RetroActive #30: Nintendo WiFi Connection Last Chance Edition
Post by: Jonnyboy117 on March 16, 2014, 05:06:18 PM
Please use this forum thread to lobby votes or ask questions about the nominees! The plan is to set up online matches in the winning game so that the RFN hosts and listeners can play together before Nintendo WFC is shut down in May 2014.
*Note: Excitebots was not released in Europe because Nintendo hates you. But we love you and figure it's worth consideration. Besides, you can easily figure out a way to play it on your old Wii.

Vote Advance Wars: Days of Ruin. It didn't get much love when it came out.

So little representation for DS, JUS is probably the best online game on Nintendo systems.

Mario Kart Wii Advance Wars: Days of Ruin (DS) Excitebots (Wii) Goldeneye 007 (Wii) What's the internet?

Can anyone comment as to which of these has the best single-player experience? I think I'll be voting based on that, considering what limitations the game will have once WiFi is shut down.

Defintely a no go with Smash... that game never worked. I voted for Advance Wars. Its one of the IPs I'd really love to see Ninty bring back

Excitebots!
I pity the fools who haven't known the joys of this game.
Unforunately "fools" includes all PAL people.

Advance Wars was voice chat if you swap friend codes. Plus it has a good single player mode. Pick Advance Wars!!!

I picked Smash Bros. Brawl, just to hear the crew continue to complain about how completely unplayable that game ever was online. :P: There's really nothing to say about any of the other games.

I voted for Excitebots. That is a fun racing game and the online actually worked, so this could make for some good discussions.

Playing card games on motor buggies! Online!
No, seriously (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvHfF9jBzVA)!

I voted Brawl because not only is it the only one of these I currently own, but also because some of the episodes where the RFN crew laments the bad online in Brawl and the Subspace Emissary also happen to tie in with subjects such as Dr. Metts' crippling addiction with Magic: the Gathering and I believe Greg talked about Brawl on the corrections episode after 103

I voted for Advance Wars because its the only game I own but never got to use the wifi feature. But I'll be happy to play MK Wii, Brawl, Goldeneye if they win. I'd have to go buy Excitebots if that won, but I might if it does.

I voted Brawl because chaos. But I'm fine with any of those Wii games.

ExciteBot also involves Betting and a Ladybug Robot Racer among other things... I need to bust out that game.

Being in Europe I unfortunately missed out on Excitebots, but I've always been interested in it. If it ends up winning it would be a good excuse for me to finally pull the trigger.

If we're voting for a NWFC game, why not choose the one that uses it best? Mario Kart Wii. I'd love the swansong to be some great 12 player online racing with all y'all. Let's do this!

Wait, a Nintendo developed and published game has voicechat?!? You're kidding right? Dude this will be much more fun than trying to make Brawl work online. I've been trying to justify buying Days of Ruin for awhile now. If this game wins I'll finally have my justification. All those Wii games I've played already.
Johnny can you tell us who's in the running still? (based on current votes)

Fred has a great point, if we exchange friend codes on this forum we can use the voicechat while playing (assuming it actually works can anyone here confirm that it does?) It would be a lot more fun to chat with you guys while playing.

I voted Mario Kart Wii, should provide some laughs. Or maybe swears. Which would make me laugh.
Can anyone comment as to which of these has the best single-player experience?
That would be Advance Wars, which is the only one of these that I would say is better in single player than multiplayer. Has a campaign of decent length and some stages that certainly require strategy.

Don't short-change the multiplayer part of Advance Wars, it's plenty of fun just not as fast paced as Mario Kart. I'd rather play a slower paced multiplayer game WITH voicechat, than Mario Kart withOUT voice chat. When I play Mario Kart, Sonic Racing, NBA 2K13 ect. online with buddies we pull out out headsets and plug them into our phones because they're just so much more fun to play when you can poke and prod each other.
If a tree falls in the woods and nobody's around to hear it, does it make a sound?
If there are lots of laughs and swearing while playing Mario Kart, nobody will hear it. If there's a moderate amount of laughter and swearing in Advance Wars it can be heard (even if only through the low quality 3DS speakers).

I think you misinterpreted what I said. I was simply saying that Advance Wars singe player is better than Advance Wars multiplayer, whereas with the other games, their own multiplayer modes are better than their own single player modes. I made no comparisons between the games.

If the topic game ends up being Smash Bros then it would be cool if Jump Ultimate Superstars! could be a side topic game along with it. ;)

Went with MKWii since it is only game I still own. Would have gone with Days of Ruin if I still owned it.

It's a shame that brawl wound up losing because it's online is the best representation of Nintendo Wifi Connection as a whole.
It feels like it never works and when it does it's all the more amazing.

I had a bunch of fun with Goldeneye online. Unfortunately, after a few weeks the performance (freezes, lag, frame rate issues) eventually got on my nerves and caused me to put the game on the shelf. When it worked though it was as good as you could hope for from a goldeneye re-make.
Hell, even the campaign managed to offer up an interesting take on the original story.
