Title: Batman: Arkham Knight
Post by: tendoboy1984 on March 04, 2014, 12:34:25 PM
WB Games just announced Batman: Arkham Knight for Xbox One and PS4. No Wii U this time, unfortunately.
I thought WB Games was one of Nintendo's biggest supporters. At least we still have support from Ubisoft and Activision.

So, based on what I read on the Kotaku article, the main takeaways are:
Release in 2014.
Next Gen Platforms only (PS4/Xbone, No Wii U Version)
Kevin Conroy reprising his role as Batman.
Open world, and bigger than Arkham City.
You can drive the Batcar.
I'll go ahead and admit that I'm not too enthusiastic about the game (I thought the open world in Arkham City was the wrong direction), but I'll watch with curiosity as more info becomes available.

Last game in the Arkham Series as well. The current rumor is that what comes after Arkham will be multiple games taken place in the same universe like how the live action and animated films now do.
Apparently DC wants to expand beyond Bats and Supes using the Justice League brand like Marvel has with the avengers. WB Montreal is supposed to be working on a Suicide Squad game and all future games will take place in the same universe to make engine and asset share easier. Kind of like how the Injustice Arkham map is obviously taken from Asylum.

Most likely this is the Unreal 4 title that Rocksteady Studio was working on which would explain why no current gen version.

That reveal trailer was pretty lame, looked like it was trying to juice the worn-out Christopher Nolan aesthetic. No gameplay though, so can't draw much of a conclusion. Hearing that it's open world, with driving, on a larger magnitude than City does not give me the warm fuzzies, however.

Wait... So an open-world superhero game where you drive the Batmobile is bad? I thought open-world games were the future? That's what GTA taught us.

I'm getting a little hyped, may get this used for the PC eventually.
What ticks me off is we are going to have yet ANOTHER empty city in the Arkham series. That is lame.

Yeah, I am getting sick of open-world game design, and this one sounds like it's getting even further away from Asylum's structure, which I think worked considerably better than City. Maybe Knight will take the genre to the next level or something with the extra pixels available on next-gen platforms.
I guess I'm also bummed because of all the Rocksteady rumors: they were making a TMNT game, a Silver Age Batman game, a Justice League game, a Superman game, and then the reality is: the 4th Arkham game in five years.

We have not seen anything from the game itself yet. How could you possibly make such a statement?
For all we know it could be a lavishly detailed and densely populated Gotham city.

The trailer says 'they have evacuated the city.' I'm reading between the lines.

Hopefully it's better than Origins. Origins started OK, but for me it ran out of steam quickly. Of course it doesn't help I was late to the Asylum party, so I played Asylum and City in very close proximity. I was happy when it looked like Batman games were going to every other year, and not an annual franchise. I think games Arhkam and Assasin's Creed are best with more time inbetween. but alas, sales figures and dollars usurp all. Go figure.

Hoping Warner keeps the executive meddling to a minimum so I can possibly pick up the GOTY version for a tenner once I actually have a system that can play this.
Obviously, I have no confidence that they can resist. Enjoy your fee-to-pay, everyone.
