Title: Help me patent this idea...
Post by: UncleBob on January 31, 2014, 10:51:12 PM
Ad filtering at the ISP level that actually *replaces* ads with ads provided by the ISP.  Instead of the individual sites getting ad revenue, the ISP gets all the money and can do more targeted advertising based off the account (and based off the account's personalized browsing history).

I'll make a fortune.

As an ISP employee, why would a website owner like such an idea if they aren't getting paid for it?

As a service provider to end users (homes, businesses, etc.), I don't care what website owners think.  I care about my bottom dollar. ;)

Pretty sure there are many other cases of this in the past, but that was the first thing to pop up.

Interesting.

Why don't all ISPs do this?  What's the downside?

Doesn't that infringe on net neutrality a bit,

What's net neutrality?

Real answer: The only websites left on the internet would be behind paywalls. It'd basically kill everything.

What customers are going to leave because they're seeing these ads instead of those ads?

Doesn't that infringe on net neutrality a bit,
Doesn't exist.

You mean the many customers like me that block ads? Or would I still be blocking their ads in this situation?

Now that Net Neutrality has been killed I don't think there is really a legal reason they couldn't.

I would presume that you'd still be able to block the ads here as you can now.

Shaymin's got the right answer. This would kill large sections of the internet, which would in turn lower demand for internet access, hurting the ISPs.

I don't think it would really hurt demand for the internet.  All the various online shopping sites, things like Wikipedia, etc. they don't depend on advertising revenue.

It would really be interesting if something like this were to roll out on a major scale though.

It would also probably strengthen the movement for net neutrality quite a bit. ISPs got what they wanted there, it wouldn't be in their best interest to do something like this to show a big easy reason to point to for why net neutrality legislation should pass.

This is why I'm digitally doomsday prepping. All the games, movies, music and books I can fit on to a  1.15 Petabyte  storage. The net as we know it will be gone within 5 years or so and theres really bad net speeds in my fortified subway bunker. So glad for the replay value of tetris, chess and call of duty.
