Title: Modern Metro - The Official Windows Thread
Post by: tendoboy1984 on November 30, 2013, 06:20:38 PM
This thread is for discussion about all things Windows (W8 and WP), including Microsoft's upcoming purchase of Nokia.

For reference, I have a Nokia Lumia 810 (T-Mobile).

Hey I have a 360, and a Asus touchscreen ultrabook running Windows 8.1. I'm getting a Lumia 510, an xbox One and maybe a surface next year.

So what do you guys think of the Threshold update?

I think the vast majority of business and professional users will continue to run Windows 7.

Microsoft Build their annual developer conference (think google I/0 or WWDC) has been announced for April 2-4 next year.

http://www.buildwindows.com/

The Verge and Windows Phone Central both had details for the Windows Phone 8.1 update slated to release around the same time as Build.

http://www.theverge.com/2013/12/16/5215484/windows-phone-8-1-features-notification-center-cortana

-Cortana voice program to rival siri and Google Now
-notification Center
-separate voice and volume settings
-Bing Smart search like Windows 8 have
-Xbox Music and Video are being separated from the OS to ensure faster updates
-VPN for enterprise
-deeper integration for social services for the people hub

Two new Nokia devices codenamed Moneypenny and Goldfinger are in the works as well. The update sounds like a big one and should bring WP to Parity with ios and Android. At this point all three are mostly about refinement and are barley doing anything new.

Some of these enhancements feel like a step back.

Didn't you see the title of the thread? It's Microsoft.

They're already competing with Siri, no one uses that either.

Honestly, I'm as much of an Apple die-hard as anybody and I've never used Siri.

My experience with Siri is that its just as good at what it does as what is already built into Window's Phone.  In fact Siri may be worse, it seems to mess up contacts more.

In the end neither of them are close to Star Trek yet and I can't say anything about Google's because I haven't used it overly much.

I was annoyed by how Siri couldn't understand certain words I would say. Then after switching to Android, Google Now is a godsend. It understands about 99 percent of every word I speak into the mic - even with background noise going on. Siri couldn't do this.

Remember kids, why innovate to compete with your competition when you can litigate to get rid of it through the wonderful US patent system.

what does this has to do with the thread at All?  I mean this could literally be said about apple going to the farm against samsung, or google forciably closing Android.

Seriously thinking about getting a Windows tablet now (or laptop/tablet combo). I would only consider a "high-end" one like the Surface Pro 2 since I need the horsepower and real Windows 8.1.

I'm thinking of getting the Dell Venue 8 Pro. I've heard good things about it. Lenovo also has their "Miix 2" tablet, which I saw at Best Buy. It looks very well-built and durable, unlike their cheap quality Android tablets.

Also, the charger port on my Nokia Lumia 810 (T-Mobile) is dying, so I need a new smartphone. Should I get the Nokia Lumia 521 ($99 on Amazon) or the Moto G ($179)?
