Title: Mario Kart 8 Runs at 60 FPS, Considered the "Definitive Mario Kart"
Post by: Steel Diver on June 11, 2013, 03:56:33 PM

Mario Kart 8 did not receive the name just for its number in the series.

In a Nintendo Developer Direct, Mario Kart 8 was called the "definitive Mario Kart." Many other details were revealed.

Like Mario Kart 7, 8 will run at 60 FPS (frames-per-second) and will feature extensive online multiplayer. This time, Miiverse is utilized to create tournaments where you can set specific rules and play with friends. Miiverse is also used to share replay data.

Mario Kart TV is a new addition that allows you to watch 30 second replays of races, both yours and other players, which are recorded automatically while playing. This entry can be controlled with the GamePad, Wii Remote and Nunchuk, or just a Wii Remote, which can have a Wii Wheel peripheral attached to it while playing.

Mario Kart 8 is named not just because of it being the 8 entry in the series, but for one of its tracks which resembles a möbius strip. A möbius strip is a surface with only one side, which traditionally comes to resemble a figure 8.

Do 2 People ride on 1 Kart?  If not then lets not talk Definitive.

60 FPS is definitely nice for a racing game, but I just hope it's still 60 in the 4-player mode!

4-player? Try 5-player, with someone on the GamePad. Sonic Racing set the precedent.

GamePad isn't on the screen.

It still has to be rendered by the system, which would affect the framerate for everyone.

I thought the GamePad had its own separate processor or something, and what happens there doesn't affect the main screen. But I could have easily misunderstood how it works.

The GamePad is only a receiver. All the processing and rendering is done in the console and streamed to it.

I know it's handled by the system, but I thought the system had something dedicated to the GamePad. I guess not.

Source for previous use of the descriptor "Definitive" on previous releases of Mario Kart?

While I'm a huge fan of Double Dash, the entire dual riders mechanic simply made the game more complicated with little advantage.  My wife already doesn't care for Mario Kart - she hates Double Dash.

Announces Mario Kart. Shows picture of a bike. [sigh] Nintendo, why do you do this?

Well, no one's perfect, I guess.

Why is 60fps a huge deal? Both MKW and MK7 ran at 60fps.

The big question is if the game can actually do it in multiplayer, which MKW could not (at least online, from what I remember).

60fps should be a must for all games. It really makes them feel alive, fluid and with a real sense of speed... Even strategy games would benefit from 60fps... Its what makes the PS4 so heart breaking that the developers seemed to have decided to wring out as much fidelity as they can by sacrificing the frame rate. Every exclusive will be 30fps.  Nintendo targets mostly 60fps, as they are a gameplay over fidelity company and I appreciate that about them.

MK7 and MKW both did 60fps online... playing online shouldn't change how the processor/gpu perform.

So far we do know that its 60fps up to 2 players, and 4 players it drops down to 30fps... 60fps online play.

MKW did 30fps online, not 60.

Only in two-player split screen, if you connected with one player then it was 60fps.
