In a developer interview on Nintendo's YouTube channel, Sakurai detailed several new features about the game, and spoke about the three new characters announced.

Both the 3DS and Wii U versions of Smash Bros. will feature the same number of characters, however, the 3DS version will have some exclusive stages based on handheld games such as The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks and Nintendogs.

While speaking about the artistic changes in the new game Sakurai also stated that the characters in the 3DS version have dark outlines around them to make the characters easier to see on the smaller screen.

Below is a listing of moves for each character

Character Details:

Mega Man

Villager

Wii Fit Trainer

I was thinking they might be the same game. I don't think I'll be getting the 3DS version even with the extra stages.

Won't there be some sort of connectivity between them? There might still be a reason to get both.

When do you think it will be released? Sept, October 2014?

Think you can chose from a Male or Female Wii Fit Trainer?

Possibly. I expected the gameplay to be the same, but I thought there would be more to separate the two and make owning both something I wanted to do immediately. If it's just some extra stages, I can probably live without the game (or wait until I can get it on sale). The problem with the 3DS version is that I'll have far fewer people to play locally since, for example, my brother doesn't have or want a 3DS. To me, local multiplayer is the main reason I enjoy the game.

We'll see, I suppose. The 3DS version would have been the perfect excuse to upgrade to an XL.

They were very clear about connectivity very early on.. so as long as they have the same character lineup, it's a somewhat fair assumption that the 3DS version will enable 3DS users to connect and play with local Wii U sessions using the 3DS as if it were an additional GamePad. But, I'm a little curious about the wording used-- "same number of characters" isn't necessarily the same as the same lineup of characters...

I assume they announced the Wii Fit Trainer after the Nintendo Direct? Because they didn't announce it during the ND.

I would give anything to have heard James Jones' response when he realized that was Megaman!

Yeah, she was announced at a press event yesterday on the show floor.
