Title: Freewheeling Mario Kart 8 Thread.
Post by: Khushrenada on June 11, 2013, 10:24:31 AM
Guess they are sticking with the numbering system of the Kart games.
I actually really like the look of this game. So far it seems to be one of the more graphically advanced Mario featured games. It's like a blend of Kart and F-Zero with anti-gravity now intruduced and the tracks look more like F-Zero tracks. This could be good.

Bikes are also back! Hopefully Rosaline is too

It's hard to think of ways to add new ideas to racing games so I'll give Nintendo credit in coming up with the anti-gravity thing. They could (and I would have expected it) just make gloried track packs, one for each system, and probably get away with it.

Everything in the trailer looked good, but there's still a lot more I want to see before I get excited.

The graphics I impress me most about this game. Honestly when I think back to F -Zero, driving upside down and through cork screws don't mean anything when the camera moves with you. It all appears "normal" if you know what I mean. I certainly don't expect this to affect gameplay much at all.

speak for yourself. having the sky below me on those cylindrical tracks through me off, literally. I couldn't concentrate on going straight and if I turned too hard my machine would jump off the track and every now and again i would fly off the track entirely.

This was one of the most visually impressive games, and is making me think of buying Mario Kart again after skipping 7. The beautiful rendition of the Mushroom Kingdom and castle make me eager for the next full Mario title. I am glad to see them putting effort into the presentation, in addition to the cool new anti-gravity gimmick.

I found the trailer to be pretty lame but I have to say this is probably one of the bes looking games at E3.

I don't remember the last time I was legitimately excited about a new Mario Kart. I buy each one and it's Mario Kart so it's not like anything is a surprise. I just expect it to be announced and I have my fun with it. As long as Daisy is in it, everything else is a formality.

I find it funny that while the visuals really impressed me, the trailer was still a little dull. I don't own and I've hardly play mk7 but I know enough about it to know the gliders are nothing new, not sure about the submerged areas though..
I grew tired of mkwii pretty fast and it might be because mk64 and ds were some of my fave games that Wii just didn't add enough new to the formula to stay fun..
So I'm finding myself in a predicament:
I definitely plan on buying a 3ds soon (more like eventually) so do i skip 8 and buy only 7? Or wait until 8 is out, be as informed as possible, play a demo or 2 and then figure out if I'll buy that over 7...
You can't go wrong with portable Mario Kart, but if 8 has crazy new tracks and tons of new characters.. Blah I hate decision making

Mario Kart 7 is my favorite one. If you can stand to wait until Mario Kart 8, you might just want to do that since it's supposed to be the "definitive" Mario Kart.

For me, Mario Kart VII is a huge step down from the Wii game, it's missing a lot of the stuff I liked.

I missed the bikes, but I liked the new tracks more.

I actually don't care about the bikes. I missed the 12-player races, some of the items, the rear-view button, the larger character roster, sending ghosts to friends, automatic drift, and more I've forgotten about. Plus I can't play it in local multiplayer, though I can't really fault the game for that since it does have it.

I didn't use most of that. And the roster begins and ends with Daisy. I only use other characters until I unlock her. Daisy and tracks. That's essentially what I pay attention to.

Oh please... *goes to play GX*
Holy crap I forgot what it was like!!! Maybe this will really spice things up!
Oh but you know what? I don't know how you guys feel about this but snaking is back. Get on miiverse and complain right away if it bugs you. Best thing about MK7 was that there was no snaking. I don't know if I can deal with NK DS levels of it. ThatGuy and/or ShyGuy used to drive me nuts with drybones and that dry bomber.

Here are some more details I've compiled from the videos and demo impressions:
-Supports 12 racers both offline and online. -Custom karts returning from Mario Kart VII seems likely, as it appeared some of the same karts had different wheels. -Coins have been spotted and likely increase speed again, but not confirmed. -Glider and underwater propeller are in. -Items seen so far are bananas, red and green shells, mushrooms, golden mushroom, and fire flower. -Miiverse can be used to set up tournaments, and play with people in the community. -A 30-second "highlight reel" is recorded after each race. -"Mario Kart TV" can be used to watch and share replays. -"All controllers" supported.

Not sure if other forum members frequent the Pietriots site but you should. It's good stuff. Just wish it updated more.
The latest article was some impressions from Mario Kart 8. Most interesting factoid for me was how colliding with other racers in anti-gravity mode gave a speed burst to your kart.
All in all, it's sounding really good.
Read about it here: http://pietriots.com/2013/10/21/mario-kart-8-one-race-detailed-impressions/

Yeah, I hope the gravity thing changes some, because when I watched the demos it looked like it didn't add anything to the game at all. Instead it just made the tracks more interesting, but didn't actually change mechanics. When I heard about the anti-gravity thing I wanted the tracks to be more diverse. I would like to see anti-gravity gimmick to be used along with driving normal so that someone could be on the road and others on the side of a building or mountain, trying to pass them.
Also, I hope for F-Zero type speeds and level design...but we will see if we get that or not.

Ehh, I don't. That's a slap to the tits to everyone waiting for an actual new F-Zero game. If Nintendo gets that close, they should just make F-Zero and stop toying with people's emotions.
Ultimately, I don't get the anti-gravity thing. It looks cool, but like you said, I don't know of it adds anything to the game. We'll see, I guess.

I watched the demo video again, and I could see 2-3 track designs that really played with the idea of gravity to any real design effect.
I think Mario Karts driving mechanics and weapon game play are quite different from F-Zero so facing Mario Kart push for more creative and crazy track designs with F-Zero speeds don't bother me.
F-Zero is more about having that finely tuned vehicle perform perfectly on insane racing tracks. Where Mario Kart is just arcade Drift and attack game play.
The only thing I really wish Nintendo would do with Mario Kart is balance their weapons better. That really is the only problem with the series at this point.

The handheld MKs never seem to draw me in as much as the console counterparts. I have not touched MK7 and don't miss it. MK DS was the only one I ever played and I never felt there was a snaking problem. I power slide like crazy but don't consider myself a 'snaker' and I always seemed to do well online.

Here is something that can be taken as rumor. The post on New seed for the game in the feature says you can make your own tracks.

It's a mistake. Nintendo would never include a track editor because then they couldn't sell DLC tracks.

They had one in F-Zero GX. Wouldn't surprise me if they did one here as well.

That was also before DLC. I'd be surprised if Nintendo included a track editor in Mario Kart 8 just because the series never had one before. They can still include a track editor and DLC. Nintendo could offer other racers, different karts/pieces, and retro packs.

I would be willing to pay extra for a track editor.

No, it was in F-Zero X Expansion Kit, a 64DD game.

I thought you meant X. Apparently, F-Zero Climax had a built-in track editor (no expansion) as well.
As for Mario Kart, I would probably pay for a track editor... then never use it due to laziness. I always wanted one for the series, but I have less time these days for putzing around. If Super Smash Bros. has a souped up stage editor, I'd probably spend time of that, sleep be damned.

It is just like every other game that has a custom editor: I like to consume quality user generated content by nerds that have more time on their hands than I do. The only game I poured a lot of time into the editor was Starcraft.

The track editor for F-Zero X kind of was like DLC before DLC existed.
If one exists for MK8 then it's going to be DLC also. I just can't imagine including that in the base game when the potential for DLC is so huge, unless maybe it's an extremely simple one.

There is plenty of room for DLC just with official track packs from previous games. In fact, they could sell the tracks with all of the 'parts' of the courses getting unlocked in the track editor to use as you wished.

Mine arrived at my parents house. I ship important packages there because their gated community is a safer drop off point versus my sketchy apartment complex. Problem is I need to get down to their place. May be able to get in Friday evening but then I work all weekend. Hopefully I can hop on next week after my finals.

Hey dude! That's more PASSION! Not more time! Meanie!
(Kidding, though I do love level design.)
I'm finding the harder cc races much easier without another player, even though my brother and I weren't acting as opponents to one another. Though Dolphin Shoals was still hard!
