Title: Wii U System Update Likely Releasing Thursday

UPDATE #2: Our sources say Thursday is the day.

UPDATE (4/23 at 3 p.m. ET): The system update is most likely launching on Thursday, according to our source close to the eShop. That means that the Virtual Console will likely launch Friday, as Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said that it was hitting the day after the update.

UPDATE (4/22 at 11 p.m. ET): The update appears to not be coming tonight as seemed likely. The maintenance is done, but the update is not live and the page for Excitebike has been removed.

Original Story (4/20): The Wii U system update, which will add quicker loads and the Virtual Console, might be coming Monday night after a period of extended Nintendo Network maintenance.

Scheduled between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. PT on Monday, the maintenance will affect the downloadable stores for the Wii U, 3DS, Wii, and DSi. Generally, all of Nintendo's online stores are affected right before major updates.

Additionally, a listing on Nintendo's website shows that Excitebike for the NES is scheduled to release on the Wii U on Tuesday. During the latest Nintendo Direct, the company announced that the Virtual Console would launch after the update.

In addition to the faster system load times and Virtual Console, the system update will add the ability to download and install games while the system is off or you are playing a game, and a quick access to Wii Mode. Wii U Panorama View is also slated to come out around the same time as well.

I think Nintedo's Facebook mentioned the update coming Monday or Tuesday with the VC. I say count on it.

Downloading and installing while playing a game would be great. Especially if you can do it while playing an online game. This is the only reason I can see that you would have an entire 1GB reserved for the OS while gaming.

All great additions.  But am I the only one who thinks it is odd that they announced this update and features a month ago?  I just figured when I heard the press release for a quicker operating system I could go download it and update.  Then I repeatedly checked the eshop to no avail.


Really?  Hyping an update?

this isn't the first time and they stated repeatedly that the update would come in april

I don't think they were hyping it as much as assuring people it was coming. People were very upset by the speed and stability of the OS for a while now and Nintendo wanted everyone to know a fix was coming, even though it wasn't ready yet.

It seems to me that if it was to address people's concerns that it was coming they should have addressed them a while ago.  But that's a valid reason to announce a fix ahead of time. 


And I know they said April, but they said April the last week in March leading me to believe it would be released first week of April.  Especially since they showed a video of how much quicker the boot time was.  So you'd have to assume the update was complete a month ago.

yeah doubtful, it likely needed to have bugs ironed out, at least it didn't get delayed to june, *cough* eshop *cough*

I think it's more likely it was complete, but they wanted to roll out the VC update with this update instead of having 2 large updates in back to back months.

eh possible, but i doubt it is completely betatested, the vc would just take an eshop update

From what I saw on Nintendo's Facebook page the Wii U VC update is coming Tuesday to NA at least. My wallet is ready for transfers :D

Yea, sorry for taking Nintendo's Facebook page saying "VIRTUAL CONSOLE IN TWO DAYS!" to mean that the update was actually launching today.

On Nintendo Earth, "Virtual Console in Two Days" means "We'll reveal the launch lineup for the launch likely coming later."

Boooo! Just wasted the better part of an hour fiddling with the wii u and trying to figure out why the update wasn't taking. Did get in some Kirby, though, so not all bad.

lets be fair.. "sources"... where were these sources when everyone thought the update was Monday? it doesnt take a genius to do the math now... it wasnt Mon-Wed and we know its coming DURING this week, and the update is a day before VC, also launching this week, Thursday is the only day it could come out on.

Could be Friday and if they want to go to the European week that Starts on Monday it could be Saturday.
