Title: Two Years Later...
Post by: UncleBob on March 14, 2013, 03:21:33 PM
I'm curious, two years later, what does your 3DS collection look like?

Not including digital downloads or duplicate games, I've gathered a collection of 25 retail purchases (that's like one a month!  Weird.  Totally not something I've budgeted or something...)  If you throw in "retail" downloads, you can add two more to that.

So, what does my collection consist of?

First Party:
Art Academy*
Crosswords Plus D
Freakyforms Deluxe*
Kid Icarus: Uprising
-Kid Icarus: Uprising Canadian Version
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
Mario Kart 7
-Mario Kart 7 #2**
Mario Tennis Open
New Super Mario Bros. 2 D
Nintendogs: Toy Poodle
-Nintendogs: French Bulldog*
-Nintendogs: Golden Retriever*
Pilotwings Resort*
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask
Paper Mario: Sticker Star*
Spirit Camera*
Starfox 3D**
Steeldiver*
Super Mario 3D Land
Tetris: Axis*

3rd Party:
Adventure Time
Centipede: Infestation*
Crush 3D
Heroes of Ruin
Jaws: Ultimate Predator
Resident Evil: Revelaittions
Rollercoaster Tycoon 3DS
Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure
Skylanders: Giants
Super Street Fighter IV

So, while my collection is slightly 1st party heavy, I think 3rd parties should be fairly happy with my collection.  Why?  Go back and look at all those titles with asterisks on them.  Those are titles that I purchased for less than half of the original retail price.  Two of those, the two with double asterisks on them, were bought "new", but at a location that was selling them used. The little D, for those who couldn't guess, indicates a "retail" digital purchase.

So, what's yours?

Fairly small. I end up selling my collection every few months. If I don't include what I've sold, I have:

Mario Kart 7
FE:  Awakening
Kingdom Hearts DDD
And I have a few VC and eShop games.

Retail:
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
- StarFox 64 3D
++ Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask
++ Nano Assault
- Resident Evil: Revelations
++ Shinobi
++ Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
++ Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward

I've owned a handful of other 3DS retail games, but regularly trade out games once finished so that I can try new titles. Some of the games in my collection now probably won't be there next year... and the circle of life continues.

Digital:
- Bit.Trip Saga
- Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D

Edit: Wasn't going to do this, but since others are keen on putting up full eShop lists I figured why not be complete? Quite frankly, eShop has been the only thing to justify my 3DS purchase so far... and I'm pretty happy with the vast majority of these titles.

DSiWare:
- Alpha Bounce
- Alt-Play: Jason Rohrer Anthology
++ Art Academy First Semester*
- Art Style PiCTOBiTS
- Dragon Quest Wars
- Electroplankton Rec-Rec *
- GO Series: Undead Storm
- The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary*
- Mario vs Donkey Kong: Minis March Again*
- Petit Computer
- Pop Island: Paperfield
- Primrose
- Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords
- Rytmik Rock Edition
- Starship Defense
- Tetris Party Live
++ Zenonia

eShop (non-retail):
++ 3D Classics TwinBee*
++ 3D Classics Kid Icarus*
- Colors! 3D
++ Crimson Shroud
- escapeVektor
- Fluidity: Spin Cycle
- Freaky Forms
- Gunman Clive
- Mighty Switch Force
- Pushmo
- Pyramids
- VVVVVV
- Zen Pinball 3D

3DS Virtual Console:
- [20 ambassador titles]*
- Avenging Spirit (GB)
- Bionic Commando (GB)
++ Blaster Master Enemy Below (GBC)
- Donkey Kong (GB)
- Gargoyle's Quest (GB)
- Kirby's Dream Land (GB)*
- Mario's Picross (GB)*
- Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 (GB)

* Free game from Club Nintendo rewards or 3DS giveaways.
++ Little, sometimes no, meaningful time spent playing the game so far.

I got mine a few months later in June, so it isn't quite two years for me yet. Hard to believe it's been that long, the whole fiasco is still fresh in my mind. Or maybe that's just because people still complain about the 3DS and think it's doomed. :/

In any case, since I didn't own a DS and the 3DS acts as two systems in one for me, I've spent the last two years collecting DS games, hoping to buy up all the good ones before they become hard to find and expensive. Unfortunately, this has already begun to happen with some of them, so I may not be able to get every single game I want for the platform. But, it has a large and extensive library, so I should still have a respectable number in the end. Plus the 3DS doesn't have very much which interests me right now, but it'll all be cheap by the time I want it.

My digital stuff is all the freebies. 20 Ambassador games, 3D Classics ExciteBike, Zelda Anniversary Four Swords, and an assortment of videos and demos.

Also, I traded up to a 3DS XL this past holiday, and sold off my regular model.

For the rest, you know what they say about pictures...

Super Mario 3D Land
Mariokart 7
Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure
Skylanders: Giants
Starfox 64
Lego Lord of the Rings
Dead or Alive Dimensions
Art Academy: Lessons for Everyone
Pilotwings Resort
Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy
Fire Emblem: Awakening
Sonic Generations
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
Shinobi
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask.

I can't be bothered to look through my 3DS downloadable games.

Now to be fair, my new job has me traveling quite a bit, so my gaming budget has been largely going towards handheld titles lately.

Downloadable -  Um...this would be easier to say what I DON'T have:

Gameboy VC - Avenging Spirit, Alleyway, that Pacman game
3DS Eshop - Dillon's Rolling Western, Samurai Sakura, Night Sky, Escape Vektor, Colors 3D, Pokedex Deluxe, Johnny Kung Fu, Kerploosh
GameGear VC - Crystal Whatever, that isometric Sonic game
NES VC - SMB Lost Levels

And I've got everything else.  Seriously.  Except for DSiWare, cuz that library just sucks as a whole.

Begs the question: why not?  It's an awesome retro action game where you can possess many different characters - each with their own properties for health, speed, jumping, attack type and power. Easily one of my favorite 3DS Virtual Console that has been released so far.

While there is a lot a garbage, there are also some really great games on the DSiWare service. I'd argue it's better than WiiWare.

What game was that? I could look it up but for some reason that feels really ardous so I'll make a guess that it was Shantae: Risky's Revenge or whatever it is subtitled.

Now, are you saying that game sucks or just being sarcastic to the comment by leahsdad?

Um, IGN's 2010 Game of the Year was Mass Effect 2.

You IGN's Game of the Year, that means the overall game of the year.

Also, WiiWare has a lot of good games. There is a lot of garbage, but there are quite a lot of good games too.

Yeah. I clearly got that he was referring to IGN's DS game of the year. Good thing we got clarification on what the OVERALL game of the year was. That's what Mass Effect 2 was. But with Pokepal just saying game of the year that could refer to a number of categories such as Xbox, DS, PC. Pokepal never stated specifially which game of the year category but considering that we were talking DSiWare on a DS forum, I don't know why you would jump to Overall Game of the Year winner. Don't be so anxious to correct people. No one was having trouble following the conversation. My forum advice for the day.

Back to the topic: I figured it was Shantae because IGN really tried to promote that game but I always viewed as a conflict of interest since Mark Bozon who worked for IGN back then is the brother of Matt Bozon who created Shantae and I always felt like he was trying to help his brother out and promote the game and hype it up more. Was Shantae considered a DS game of the year anywhere else? It's probably a fine game but I'd put stock in some else's review of it than someone who's partiality could be questioned.

Not sure. NWR, GameTrailers, Nintendo Power, Gamasutra, GameSpot, and GameSpy all picked Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies as DS Game of the Year.

It has been a slow two years for me on the 3DS. I only have a handful of games outside of the Ambassasor titles.

Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars
Mario Kart 7
RE: Revelations
Kid Icarus (I still haven't finished due to the awful controls)
Paper Mario Sticker Star

Pre-ordered Fire Emblem.

I haven't brought a single thing from the e-shop. In some ways there are more games avaliable, but none of it is what I want. I am still waiting on the yet to be annouced Advanced Wars game, but that's it on the horizon. I don't get any of the indie games, not because they are bad, but because I am better served by Steam. There is a lot of potential left untapped.

that was my personal pick
but tbh imagine the backlash they got for picking a dsiware game for that
Title: Re: Two Years Later...
Post by: Khushrenada on March 27, 2013, 11:02:07 AM
I'm not sure there would be that much backlash since they already set a precedent for doing something like that when they made World of Goo the Wii game of the year in 2008 I think. I could be wrong on what year it was so, if TJ Spyke wants to correct it, have at it. Regardless, having done that, for them to choose a DSiWare game as game of the year later wouldn't be that shocking. Plus, I should take a look at 2010 DS games but I think the library was starting to wind down in quality titles by that point with 3DS coming around the corner so I don't think there would be a feeling of any major game getting snubbed by that selection.
Title: Re: Two Years Later...
Post by: TJ Spyke on March 27, 2013, 11:38:21 AM
You are correct, they gave World of Goo their Wii GOTY. I strongly disagree with that since there were far better Wii games that year (like Brawl). I like WOG, but I fell its over-rated.

And it makes it seem odd for them to pick Shantae when every other major gaming outlet picked Dragon Quest IX. Not saying Shantae isnt a good game (I havent played it, but I have never heard anything bad about it), just makes it a little more odd that they are pretty much the only ones who picked it as GOTY and the director of the game only left IGN 10 months earlier (Mark Bozon worked at IGN until February 2010, the GOTY was announced that December)

it was Matt bozon who worked on the game, Mark is the one who worked at IGN and i think they're cousins or something

They are brothers, and both work at WayForward (Matt since 1995, Mark since February 2010). Either way, it casts doubts on the validity of their pick for GOTY since Mark was in charge of IGN Nintendo until a few months before the game came out.

Mario Kart 7
Super Mario 3D Land
Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Days
And some eshop ****.

My 3DS policy is to not buy a new game until I beat the previous one. See if I can knock over Lugi's Mansion before Fire Emblem hits the Euro shop, if not i guess we'll see whats next.

I doubt Luigi's Mansion: Dark Days is that long. While the first was criminally short when I 100% that game in single digit hours, twice. The underlying gameplay isn't the type that has a long haul element to it. While they could resort to kill rooms, that isn't really their style unless it is "Extra" or new gameplus stuff where you kill 100 floors of something.

Think of it like a Metroid game. If you played through that game going from one gameplay upgarde to another, that game isn't that long. What makes it look is all the scanning and back tracking for more powerups as you get more equipment. LM is going to play similiar to that except it does it without using a single gun. I figure 10 - 15  hours on a first run without 100% unless they didn't learn anything from the first game.

I would get myself when it gets cheap. Got plenty of other games to play.

My collection is tiny:

Super Mario 3D land
Theatrhythm
Cave Story 3D
Star Fox 64 3D
Paper Mario Sticker Star

Kirby's Pinball Land
Super Mario Land 2
Liberation Maiden
Gargoyle's Quest
Gunman Clive
Link's Awakening DX

It's not been bad for me. I wish virtual console was just loaded up with Gameboy Color titles and I wish retail titles were as cheap on eshop as they are in real life after a couple of months. I really want Luigi's Mansion, but it's hard to buy when I know Gamefly or someone else will be selling it for $25 in four or five months and $15-$20 in eight or nine months. So yeah

How do you guys have time to play all these games? I have a job and university and girlfriend to do. I wouldn't be able to afford all these either.

Time to play them all? No way. But why should that stop me from collecting?

My guess is that most people with big lists are in the same situation: more money than time, but a desire to collect (usually with the intent to play "eventually").

My main hobbies are running, basketball, and video games. Sports have essentially zero cost for me (other than replacing shoes every couple of years) so my entertainment budget is basically dedicated to video games. The only consoles I own are Wii, 3DS, and PSP. Wii doesn't get any new games; PSP only gets attention when PSN sales are appealing; so 3DS gets games almost by default.

Any game I pay more than $10 or $15 for has either been played already or will be played in the near future.  If the price is in that $10-15 range, then I don't mind splurging once every week or two for gaming treat even if I have no intent to play right away.  (I have no plans to buy a new gaming console - either handheld or portable - for years so don't mind having a backlog of games available.)

Just for fun, I tagged my list to show which games haven't been played more than an hour so far. Outside of getting 3 big retail releases close together - 2 at no cost by trading games I had finished playing - it really doesn't look that bad.

I used to collect a lot of games too thinking that I would at some point have time to play them.
But I never did.

I also have a full schedule and not a lot of extra cash, but you just buy games cheap. Outside of Sticker Star the last game I payed more than $20 for was probably DiRT 3.

I just got my 3DS when the Pikachu Edition was released a few weeks ago... but here are my games:

Super Mario 3D Land
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
Professor Layton and The Miracle Mask
Etrian Odyssey IV: Legend of the Titan
Fire Emblem: Awakening

All digital download and I probably wouldn't have gotten Luigi's Mansion if it wasn't free with a special offer.  But it's a nice little game.

I'm conflicted on whether or not to buy Ocarina of Time 3D.  I've beaten the game once way back in 1996/1997.  I remember liking it.  But the problem is that Wind Waker is my favorite Zelda.  If it were Wind Waker, I'd pick it up no problem.  (I know they're remaking it for Wii U, but I'm never going to buy a console ever again for reasons I won't get into here.)

Hm...

Ocarina of Time 3D is a great version of the game. In addition to the graphical upgrade, it includes a number of gameplay tweaks that, while not major changes, dramatically improve the game. If you ever want to play OoT again, the 3DS version is definitely the way you should do it.

It's really the little things that make OoT3D the ideal version of the game, which it is. If you're unsure, I'd look for it a less than full price. It's a tough sell at $40, but definitely a good buy.

Kid Icarus is great.
Zelda is the same old thing with less traveling in between menu screens.
Haven't played Metal Gear, I hear it has frame rate issues, though.
NSMB2 is more of the same, but has some unique ideas. DLC is worthless.
Tales of the Abyss also has some frame rate issues, but it's good.

If you don't own Pushmo and Crashmo, you're not playing a 3DS correctly.

Beware of the controls for Kid Icarus. There is a good game in there, but the controls are sub-optimal to put it politely. The ground combat is pretty hit and miss which would have been less of a problem if they allowed you to carry a second weapon. The flying bits are fantastic though. It might be very different if you have a circle pad plus.
