This is obviously a very tenuous assumption to make. Perhaps Nintendo is just moving things around on their website. Or updates will be so few and far between that it's not worth having a whole separate section on their website for them. Or they are killing the Virtual Console but they'll call it something else when they merge their two eShops into one. Or maybe they're just done releasing old games digitally. WHO KNOWS MAN.

The 3DS VC is still (relatively) alive and kicking, so I highly doubt they're killing the service.

The entire Virtual Console service, regardless of what console, needs a massive stimulus package of more games.

If I have learned anything from the people in power is that Virtual Console doesn't need a stimulus but a cutting of its debt and refunds to its highest game buyers. These means that older games will need to go away.

The upcoming *Wii* Virtual Console page has been removed from the Japanese site. Because the one for Wii U is now being made... This is a good sign. Just be patient until the Wii U Virtual Console arrives. Good things come to them who wait.

This is for Japan, whose Virtual Console on Wii has like 200 more games on it than ours. At current release rates, Nintendo probably has enough games to keep supplying North America for the next two and a half decades.

Keep in mind how long it took for the 3DS eshop to really get going... or exist... at all :P Nintendo doesn't rush into things, we wait longer, but we aren't bombarded with patches every ten minutes either. Hopefully what they're working on is getting their emulators running on the wii u so we don't have to play virtual console in wii mode. Is that an emulator within and emulator? emuception.... O_O

The games for WiiU will be enhanced! Awesome. If you re-buy a game transferred from the Wii it will cost $1 - $1.50.

This says 6.4 MB: http://www.wiiwarewave.com/t3136-balloon-fight-wii-u-vc-review , which seems much closer to what you would expect for a NES game on the service.

These are Wii Virtual Console games. Here you go: http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33105 (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33105)
It's to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the NES/Famicom in Japan. So Wii U owners will get a different VC game for $0.30 each month. The North American/PAL list is similar to the Japanese list, except Japan will get Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem in February and EarthBound in March. This is noteworthy because this is the first time Japan is actually getting EB, despite the Japanese copy of Super Smash Bros. Brawl having a demo of it in the VC section).

I would not be surprised if the reason we're not getting Earthbound in this promotion is Nintendo wanting the Westerners desperate to play the game to have to pay full price instead of just 30 cents.

For the record, I would GLADLY pay import pricing ($9) for a VC release. Yes, that's over MSRP. I lost my copy of Earthbound in 199-friggin-6 and want to buy it legally.
Title: Re: Virtual Console dead? Something new to rise from the ashes?

What if Nintendo releases it only on the Wii U's VC, so that existing Wii owners will have to buy the Wii U if they want to legally be able to play it (without playing the original SNES cartridge)?

I don't give a **** about paying full price or not, I just want my game. The cartridge battery save is dead and I don't know the know-how to fix it. I was playing through the game on an emulator on my android phone but I made the mistake of installing an os update that reset everything, and the emulator (the only freaking free one with save states enabled) was no longer in the google shop...
sigh

My Earthbound cartridge's battery was dead when I bought it used years ago. I considered returning it since the store I bought it from is very good about refunding defective used games but I thought twice about it considering its rarity. I was able to get a friend of mine who is familiar with electronics to replace the battery going from a guide online. The battery replacement is totally doable but you'll need someone involved who knows somewhat what they're doing.
Is there any real threat of a lawsuit or is Nintendo just being overly cautious?

Probably a little of both. Thing is, I'll bet if Nintendo had just confidently released the game on the VC years ago and acted like there was nothing wrong with it I doubt anyone would have taken action, but they've gone out of their way to act like they're guilty, which I think would make it more likely for someone to call them on it.

I've always found the alleged legal issues surrounding a VC release of Earthbound to be sketchy at best. There are other games from that same era with similar issues that have come to the VC, like Chrono Trigger, and those came without incident.

Yeah, no one noticed until the game was sat on for seemingly no reason and thus we went looking for the reason.

I wish there was a way for the internet to quietly sleep all that stuff under the rug. slowly take down all mentions of what the legal issues might be, tweak wikipedia etc then let Nintendo release the fucking game. All the fans will remain quiet, no one will speak of the music "inspired" by the Beatles and such, we'd be happy - new fans who honestly have no idea about the games history will enjoy a unique and charming RPG, life will go on.. but we'll know.

In a baffling piece of news, Kotaku reports that Virtual Console games on Wii U will not be able to access save files from the Wii versions. This means that if you decide to go ahead and pay that $1/$1.50 fee to upgrade your Virtual Console Wii games to the Wii U versions, you will have have to start over and not work with your existing save data. http://kotaku.com/5979631/wii-u-virtual-console-games-wont-work-with-older-save-files

While that's pretty poor planning on Nintendo's part, I honestly can't think of a game I'd care that much about having to start over with.
Title: Re: Virtual Console dead? Something new to rise from the ashes?
Post by: Kytim89 on January 28, 2013, 10:27:56 PM
There are only two games out of my forty Virtual Console games that I will not upgrade to the Wii U due to the fact that the saves do not carry over and they are Super Metroid and Super Mario RPG. I feel as though the amount of progress I have achieved in those games is not worth the effort to replay. However, if I can repurchase them as a blank slate for the Wii U and not have my old save erased then I might be open to dong this. Ironically, those would have been the first games that I paid to upgrade had the save files been able to transfer over to the Wii U's VC.
How will GBA games be played on the Gamepad? Will the games take up the whole screen? Will Nintendo be emulating the GameBoy player for the Gamecube?

Wait, you say you won't pay to upgrade them, then say you would be willing to buy them? Well, at least with Super Metroid you will be able to buy it for $0.30 in a few months.
Title: Re: Virtual Console dead? Something new to rise from the ashes?

Even without the save transfer, I don't know how you can say no to Super Metroid for 30 cents.
Title: Re: Virtual Console dead? Something new to rise from the ashes?
Post by: azeke on January 28, 2013, 10:38:43 PM
That's retarded.
What's the point of this transfer then if you don't actually transfer your saves?
Title: Re: Virtual Console dead? Something new to rise from the ashes?
Post by: TJ Spyke on January 28, 2013, 10:43:30 PM
You can still transfer them from the Wii to the Wii U and keep the save files, but only if you play the games in the Wii Mode. So you either have to keep them in Wii Mode, or upgrade them and lose your save file (which I suppose is fine for games like Super Mario Bros. which have no real big loss starting over).
Title: Re: Virtual Console dead? Something new to rise from the ashes?

Maybe they'll release a transfer tool six months later like they're doing with retail and eShop 3DS games.
