Title: Demo disc
Post by: JSasky on May 29, 2003, 12:11:08 PM
Maybe I missed something but how do I get the demo disk for the GC? Do I have to buy a new GC, or can I order it?
What's the deal?

It's incredibly screwed up is what it is.
If you buy a GameCube console right now, you are almost assured a demo disc. (ask first though). Some stores seem to be giving them out if you buy a GameCube game. Other places are selling them for $10 USD. I also have a store in my town that's selling them shamelessly at $20 USD a pop.
Call around to your retailers and see who's doing what. Find the deal that looks right for you, and take it. The demo disc is VERY good. I don't really like Sonic Adventure too much, and the Splinter Cell demo pissed me off (I couldn't figure out where to go... I hadn't gotten that far in the full game). Billy Hatcher is amusing, but kind of strange and short. But the Soul Calibur II demo is worth every penny of the $10 you pay to get the disc.

Of course the best thing is to have a friend in retail.

If none of the stores you know do not have the disc, your best bet is probably eBay. Or Amazon, as yegO mentioned.

My friend went to Electronics Boutique and they were giving away the demo discs for free so he got about three and gave one to me. Trust me ... you dont want one - they're highly over rated. It's a mini disc that doesn't even run in the Gamecube. you put it in a computer and it just has movies (non-interactive) of the worst games that are already out.

You've got no friggin' idea what demo discs everyone beyond you and your friend are talking about. You're describing the mini CD-ROMs that went out early after the Cube launch, containing aweful Quicktime movies, encased in a little Indigo Cube-themed paper slip case. That's all year-2001 stuff.
Come back to where the rest of us are, in May 2003. The real demo discs (called so cuz they really have playable demos) have a custom Cube/DVD style disc case, and may be bought at some stores, while others will only give it out with the purchase of a new GameCube system. Some places sell it for $9.99, or $39.99 if they don't like you.

I'm a Nintendo Power subscriber. NOA should seriously consider distributing all future promotional discs through their magazine. That would spike subscription sales.

Don't put it past them, they still may, there's still the July issue. Now me, I didn't want to trust them with that so I went out and picked one up at my local Best Buy.

Hey, I just bought this demo disc at Target. The price was $10. Worth every penny. Viewtiful Joe Rules! This game is seriously old school w/ some incredible next gen flair! I'm buying that one the day it is released.

Nope. Sorry, still thinking of the wrong disc, but you are a lot closer this time. It's set up like one of the store demo discs, but it's intended for the end user. It's being given out to people when they buy a GameCube, and the promotion is only a week or so old.

I highly doubt they will add one every issue. It is probable that they will issue four, one for each quarter of the year.

Besides they would just lose money giving them away every month. sure they might give one away for free, but that's only cause you bought a gmaecube. Burning short version games (about 6) onto one mini dic is not as easy as burning 7 full games onto a big CD rom.
Yes, Yes fine so I was talking about the horrible quicktime movie demos. aargh (shiver) horrible. Isn't 1 little mistake forgivable? You mate all mate know mate how mate dum mate Aussies mate are mate.

I began my search for the Preview Disc on Thursday. Game Stop was sold out (they said it was a very popular item and sold out as soon as they arrived). Sam Goody had one copy (priced at $0.01 - yes one cent!), but after the Manager called 2 other stores - he refused to sell it to me, citing that if it's priced at a penny it must be part of some special promotion that he isn't aware of. Then he stressed the fact that the back of the packages reads "NOT FOR RESALE". I went to Game Gallery - they didn't have any.
Friday, I went to Game Champ (a nice little place here in Philly, at 15th & Chestnut Sts). I find myself buying games from this store alot. I went in there to buy SPEED KINGS (it looked promising, but it's not so great) - No preview discs.
Before giving up, I went to Target on Saturday. There were no Preview Discs in the case that they keep the games in. Before leaving, I decided to ask the guy at the Electronics Department cash register. Sure enough, they had a few copies but for whatever reason they were behind the counter next to the register.
SOUL CALIBER II is going to rock!

Any one else think that Rebel squadron 3 grapics looked pretty weak. Specially bad was the speeder bike section, what was that filmed on a N64?

F zero looked pretty sweet. But you would think they could'ne got a guy who knew how to play the game for the movie. The guy is like crashing into every wall.

Nope. You are the single person in the world who thinks that. To tell the truth I thought that Rogue Squadron 3 was the only game safe from the graphics whores. I guess I was wrong.
When photorealistic graphics just aren't enough anymore... *sigh*

Umm... thats the same trailer they have on the demo disc.
I liked the graphics in hoth and the flying scenes they looked on par with rebel squadron 2.
But, come on! You actually dug the speeder bike graphics? The trees looked like brown piles of dung flying by.
The character animations of the foot missons looked awfull as well. They we running around like something was stuck up their arses.
I dunno guess Prime spoiled me, and I was looking for a more dramatic improvement over the RS2. Which I guess is pretty hard, because the graphics were really good in it.

The trees look like trees, with leaves. What more are you asking for? They look remarkably like California Redwood trunks, except for the fern-like branches. How the hell do you expect tall, skinny, brown-barked trees to look? Metroid Prime's trees looked like cardboard covered with Play-doh, but they were "artistically" nice, but not nearly on the same realistic calibur as Rebel Strike's. Prime as a whole wasn't in the same ballpark with Rogue Leader's model complexity. If you were spoiled by anything, it was the pretty colors.
http://www.lucasarts.com/products/rebelstrike/images/screens/12.jpg This looks very similar to a redwood forest, not a dung forest, and Luke looks like he's riding a flying ant.
Character animations do look strange. It's a new thing for Factor5 to try.
And the last game was called Rogue Squadron II, not rebel squadron 2.

Dude, all I can say is that these people are right. RS3 looks absolutely fricken' amazing. Personally, I think that comment about the graphics being "unimpressive" was possible the dumbest thing I have heard all day.
and no, I am not polite

Ok, if you drive, go out into a forest with your car and start driving really fast down the road. Then look out the window to your side. What do you see? Flying dung is what you see. At that speed, anything that is brown is going to look like flying dung. While you are doing that, try to keep your eyes on the road. One addition I would really like in the game would be when you shot down fighters, that they sometimes should distinegrate piece by piece. Wreakage flying everywhere styles like in the PC/MAC game X-Wing. A SSD level would be sweet.

I thought RS3 looked pretty good, I wished I could find a GC demo up for grabs. I've tried Target here in Ocala, FL but no one ever has any idea, As well as walmart and EB which can't give any unless you buy a new gamecube. That really ticks me off, especially people who are in these departments know absolutely nothing about games or anything at all for that matter.
Nintendo should give those thing's out, especially for those who already brought the Cube at launch at midnight at walmart "Me" I want to try Viewtiful Joe and SC2 along with Billy Hatcher and DL some of those games to my GBA would be nice.
"sigh" Nintendo Let anyone get the demos.... Please!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe I'm just jumping at shadows, but I'ver heard a lot of rumours on some other boards that there are some secrets on the demo disc. Something about unlocking another level for Billy Hatcher, I dunno. Do any of you know about this? Oh, and F-Zero looks incredible!

Here's my story. First I went to KB Toys and the lady behind the counter said she has none but she didn't even bother to check. I went to EB and they refused to sell it to me. I went to EBX and they didn't have any either. Then I went to FYE and asked the lady behind the counter and she said she didn't have any and she didn't check either. I was really mad and really dissapointed and bummed out because that was the last electronic sotre in our mall. I was leaving FYE when I look on the new titles rack in front of the store and there was 2 copys of the demo disc! It was my happiest moment in a long time. Me and my best friend bought the game and then we went back to EB and flashed the demo discs in their faces. HA HA HA. You should have seen the look on there face. I still feel bad though, for people who haven't got the disc. Nintendo's screwing thing's up and they better get their act together.

Yeah, all you do is hold A during the title screen until the first level appears, and it should be different.
But really, can anyone get enough of Viewtiful Joe? I don't think I could count how many times I've played through that one.

I had enough of Splinter Cell the moment Sam-Fish refused to grab onto the little shade/overhang thingies that were all over the insertion zone. Climb up the building, jackass! For a black ops agent, I wonder why he was standing in the alley ever-so-conspicuously like that in the first place.
