Title: Calling all Apple fans! (iPod, iPhone, iPad, Mac, etc.)
Post by: tendoboy1984 on September 12, 2012, 05:06:45 PM
At Apple's press event today, they unveiled the new iPhone 5, which has a taller 4-inch screen. The device itself is thinner than the older iPhone 4S, but it's the same width.
Apple also unveiled a redesigned iPod Touch. Like the iPhone 5, the new iPod Touch has the same tall 4-inch screen. It also has an A5 chip, meaning games play smoother and faster, with graphics that are more detailed. The new iPod Touch also comes with iOS 6 pre-installed, with features like Passport, Apple Maps (replacing the old Google Maps app), and even Siri. Yes Siri is finally on the iPod Touch, but of course it only works on Wi-Fi.

Siri on iPad 3, iPhone 5, and iPod Touch 5th Gen (http://images.apple.com/ios/whats-new/images/siri_overview.jpg)
There's also a new iPod Nano, with a slightly taller 2.5-inch screen. Pretty underwhelming.

Yep, it's still the same iPhone again - but now you can have...wait for it...another row of apps on your screen! I'm a fan of widescreen phones in general, but I think the iPhone actually looked better with a 4:3 (or whatever aspect it was) screen. The real pictures of the new phone look like bad Photoshop jobs from fans. Having the camera above the earpiece is an odd decision too...it looks like a room where you place all the furniture in a line, and while it looks "ordered" it makes it look kind of stupid at the same time. It's just my opinion though...and leaving out T-Mobile is a huge mistake. I like the new back a lot better (iPhone, not iPod Touch) and I'm sure I'll make a ton of money off of people breaking these things, so there's always that.

Honestly, I usually argue against Brandogg's claim of it being the same phone over and over, but the only thing separating this from a 4S is the wider screen and LTE, and I don't even care about the former. Still, though, as someone who has had an iPhone 4 for over two years, I'll be buying an iPhone 5, and switching to Verizon in the process. I'll probably hold off until early next year, though, to ensure that I have the money necessary for the Wii U launch and so I'll have an untethered jailbreak solution ready and waiting for me when I get it.

Switching to Verizon is always a good idea, unless you happen to live in that 2% of the USA where T-Mobile has halfway decent coverage (since you can do unlimited again now). The thing that will drive me even more crazy though, is that they call it a TALLER screen instead of a WIDER screen. For some reason the majority (if not all) of iPhone users have this problem where they take pictures and videos holding the phone vertically, which makes watching their videos actually hurt your eyes because it's such an odd aspect. Perhaps if they would point out that it's WIDE screen and not TALL screen, then maybe people would catch on.

Well, since I have mine locked into portrait orientation 99% of the time, calling it taller would be more accurate. I only ever take it out of portrait to watch/take photos and videos.

Most people who their phones vertically, and that is also how measurements are. So calling it taller is correct, it's not wider.
I don't plan to get a iPhone anytime soon anyways. I have a 4th gen iPod Touch and don't have the money to replace it, so it sucks that I won't get Siri (I just like to have more features. As for iOS 6, I am a little disappointed Apple decided to drop Google Maps due to their ongoing fight with Google. Apple already said that their first party map app won't have the public transportation option (which is what I mainly use Google Maps for).

I understand that most people hold their phones vertically, but the screens are still measured width by height just like a TV. You can jailbreak your iPod Touch and put Siri on it, but you'll end up just like most people with a 4S and never use it.

I would still like to have Siri anyways. I can't seem to find any legit ways to install it without having access to a iPhone 4S to validate it with Apple. I see sites claiming to have ways, but they seem shady based on user comments on those sites. Oh well.

Ahem... I wrote all of that in the original post. Calling it a TALLER screen was my emphasis, because most phones are held in the vertical position.

I only hold mine vertically if I'm calling someone or maybe reading an eBook, otherwise it's in landscape mode.

I have a iPhone 4S, and a third gen iPod Touch.
My iPod Touch is locked out of iOS 6. Nice. Thanks apple.
The only thing that excited me through that announcement was that (and this is relevant to almost nobody here!) it's compatible with LTE frequencies here. And as EE (the UK's first LTE network) started its launch process this week, it's pretty much a lock that we are getting a LTE iPhone.
I'd like to hear any Apple acolytes on the site defend Apple's absolutely horrendous earbuds. Say what you want about expensive hardware and battery life issues, but I'm of the position that those earbuds are indefensible.
I maintain my stance on this. It's too early to say about the earbud, but for anything pre-yesterday's announcement if you buy an iDevice and are still using the original apple headphones you deserve to have your iDevice confiscated from you. There is no reason on earth why you can spend several hundred dollars/pounds and THEN use those cheap shitty leaky headphones provided.

It's a pretty standard update which is expected. I'm not sure there's anything any smartphone can offer that will set the world on fire for me. I've never needed the latest and greatest, even if I like having it. I like the money saved more. The iPhone 5 is an easy upgrade choice if you have a 4 or 3GS. Nothing besides time travel capabilities would convince me to upgrade to the next year's model. 4G and a larger screen are nice and all, but I'll gladly wait for a 5S. Iphones have excellent trade value so I will likely get my next one for free. At this point, for what I use my iPhone for, I'd be way more impressed by a longer lasting battery or even the ability to delete Game Center, Stocks, and Newsstand.
The upgrades for the iPod models are nice and long overdue. I wouldn't feel apprehensive about getting one if I wanted one, knowing Apple didn't update them last year.
I'm waiting for an iMac update though I'm secretly hoping Apple pushes that to next year when I can afford one and because I will have had my MacBook Pro for 3 years and will be due for a new computer.

I Never really got the whole hype surrounding Apple products. They make slick looking technology and software, but quite frankly I don't care enough about the tech to care. I have a Creative MP3 player, I have a Nokia Phone and I have a 3DS.

I like having access to the Internet practically everywhere I go. That's the appeal to me. It doesn't have to be an Apple product to do that. I'd probably be just as happy with Android, Windows Phone 8 or even the upcoming Blackberry 10. The iPhone does what I need it to do and until it doesn't, I'll stick with Apple.

I think Apple should just kill off the iPod Nano, Shuffle, and Classic (especially the Shuffle, since it's just a few buttons, with no screen to see any song details). Those iPods really aren't needed since the iPod Touch does all those things and more.

My family is under the iOS umbrella, so I think we are sticking with iphones for at least a little while. My mother has a 4 and while she is due for an upgrade, I think she is going to wait it out because the 4 is fine for her and she now has a new iPad. My wife is going from a 3GS to a 5. She will love that. Her 3GS has been slow for awhile now. She got it from me when I got the 4S last year. Only my dad doesn't want one. He's not tech savvy and he had a blackberry for years and years from work before he retired. When he retired, he wanted another blackberry even though I tried to point out to him that everything is probably easier on an iphone or Android or WP device. His choice. They used the new iPad as their sole internet source while in Europe for the last four months and he doesn't want to change after that, so he probably will never change.

You make no sense. If they sell, they keep them. Simple as that. People who jog love the shuffle. The new nano will probably be very popular.
You want Apple, a company notorious for not giving options, to get rid of all their options with the ipod?

That's like saying the world should have stopped making bicycles because cars exist.
The different iPod models serve different segments of the market. Some people love the Shuffle, for example, because it's relatively cheap and they just want music playing while they work out. The Nano is a bit strange because Apple made it larger and it's only $50 cheaper than the Touch, but I suppose there are people don't care for more than music and video. There are many people who love the Classic dearly because of it's enormous HDD.

Because not everyone wants a Touch. Some people like simplicity and minimalism in the shuffle. Or they really want something that will fit in a small pocket like the nano. And Apple makes money on all the ipod models. Why throw away a revenue stream to try and get a small percentage more people to buy a Touch when they aren't going to use it to buy apps?

Exactly, Apple makes a big profit on the iPod hardware, and all those models can play music (and the Classic video) bought on iTunes. If they make profit for Apple, there is no reason to stop selling them.

I can't find my old thread about AT&T finally letting you unlock your iPhone, but I just want to say that I can factory unlock ANY AT&T iPhone if you need. Price currently ranges from $35 (for 1-24 hours turn around) to $50 (less than 10 minutes) if anyone is interested. I don't need your phone, just the IMEI - again, this works on any AT&T iPhone (2G, 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S...5?) but it does NOT work for Sprint or Verizon. Once it's done you just pop in the SIM card you want to use and plug your phone into iTunes (internet connection required) and it will be activated and PERMANENTLY unlocked. If you don't have the SIM card you want to use, you can just do a full restore and it will unlock that way as well.

Wired has a pretty glowing review of the Earpods. Honestly, they look uncomfortable even though that's the exact opposite thing Jony Ive was going on about. I wouldn't feel right complaining about them if I bought an iPhone 5 since the Earpods come with the phone. It's like the Wii Remote jacket. I hate using them, but I also don't have to and it was nice of Nintendo to include them. I probably won't have a chance to test the Earpods out until next year when I upgrade and I'm not going out of my way to buy a set since I still the regualar earbuds.

What was that podcast app that Jonny recommended on RFN? Was it Instacast?
iOS's handling of podcasts has been shoddy since v4 with the chapter bug.
4 - Cannot see chapter titles. 5 - Fixes it. 5.1 - Cannot see chapter titles again. 6 - Ejects podcasts out of the default music app entirely. Download the default apple podcast app and it doesn't show chapter titles (or have any indication that it's a bug, implying this is intentional!).
Why is it so difficult to get right?

5 didn't fix it (at least on my iPod Touch, I still just saw "Chapter 1", "Chapter 2", etc.).
What are you talking about with iOS 6? I downloaded it last night, and podcasts are in the exact same spot that they were before.

There is no reason that even the iPod Touch 1st gen can't have Siri, other than Apple trying to convince you to "upgrade."

iOS 6 is kind of a letdown. It has some nice improvements over iOS 5 (Facebook integration, redesigned apps, etc.), but there aren't many substantial improvements over the older iOS versions.
I saw the iPhone 5 at a Verizon retailer today while I was at the mall. The bigger screen is nice, but again, the whole unit looks like a slight upgrade to the iPhone 4S. The "Panorama" feature is amazing, kudos to whoever finally convinced Tim Cook/Phil Schiller/etc. to go ahead with that idea.
The new iPod Touch (5th Gen) looks awesome. I want to get one, but I can't believe they're charging $300 for a 32GB unit!
There are a few Siri-like apps in the App Store; I use one called "Evi". And there is a very helpful text-to-speech function (called "Speak Selection") that's hidden in the "Accessibility" menu under "Settings". Once you activate it, you just select a block of text and then tap "Speak", and a Siri voice reads your text out loud.

Hopefully Apple gets their head of their ass and quickly fixes their Maps app (which seems to be the biggest complaint about iOS 6). It was clear Apple replaced Google Maps with their own program purely because of this ongoing feud with Google, Apple's Maps app is so much inferior. Besides having wrong directions sometimes occur, their is also the issue of no public transportation on it (which is what I personally use the maps app for).

Agreed, though when you click on the transit icon, it takes you to the App Store so you can download a separate transit app. I still hope Apple includes transit info with the next update.
It's odd, because Apple and Google built the original iOS Maps app together, and it had transit info built-in, so why would Apple remove it with their new Maps app?
Google Maps can't come soon enough!

The problem with transit apps are that not every area has one, and they can vary wildly by quality.
Apple and Google started becoming more enemies than friends when Google released Android. And Apple was not too happy that Google refused to put turn-by-turn directions into the iOS version of Google Maps. This new Maps app is one Apple built themselves (the Google Maps app was made by Google, with Apple providing the info from cell towers to help improve directions).

Why is Apple singling out Google as their main threat when Microsoft has been their biggest competitor for over 30 years? Microsoft has Windows PC and Windows Phone, but it seems Apple is focusing all their hate against Google. Yes Android is extremely popular, but their PC OS (Chrome) is languishing, so they aren't on the same level as Microsoft in that sense.

Apple is not stopping Google from releasing iOS apps, they are just not gonna have Google Maps or YouTube pre-installed anymore (Google released a separate YouTube app last week, though they don't appear to have plans for a separate Google Maps app).

That's not what I meant. I was asking why Apple has this constant hate against Google, when Microsoft has been their main competitor for over 30 years. You never hear about how Apple "hates" Windows Phone, it's always "Android this" and "Android that". It's almost like Apple doesn't expect Windows Phone to be a success, so they aren't considering it a threat.

It makes sense to not want to depend on your biggest competitor for one of the main components of your OS. I'm sure the maps app will improve over time; luckily I don't have to use it very often so it doesn't really affect me much.

If Apple really wanted to, they could block Google apps from iOS. And why would Google want to keep supporting iOS devices when Apple has said repeatedly that they want to "destroy" Android?
Google and Microsoft make apps for Apple devices, yet they get nothing in return (Apple doesn't make apps for Android or Windows Phone). So how is that a fair deal?

Google makes money off those apps through ad revenue. They also encourage people to continue using their services by making sure they support one of the most popular platforms. Apple isn't in the same position, so they don't need to support the others.

Apple has no reason to block Google from iOS, as that would just give people more reason to switch to Android (and Apple would like like douches).
Google doesn't get anything from Android either, as they release it for free to companies. They want to get their products out to as many people as possible (even if the iOS versions have fewer features than the Android versions).

Nope, but the interface is nice. Very "Metro".

Apple made the YouTube app, and it absolutely sucks, which is why they finally ditched it. Apple got rid of Maps because they are Android's biggest competitor (not the other way around). There was no navigation in iOS Maps because there is zero benefit for Google to include it.

In a particularly cool move by Verizon and Apple - the Verizon iPhone 5 is factory unlocked from the start (even if you buy it on contract), and will work on ANY GSM network (including AT&T and T-Mobile). It won't to LTE on AT&T, but it WILL do HSPA, and AT&T's LTE network is all but non-existent anyway.

I'm a bit of a disgruntled Apple fan as of late, as those who follow me on Twitter know.
I'm quite upset with the iOS 6 update concerning the iPhone 4, and I don't feel that all of the actual iPhone 5 adjustments (I refuse to call them advancements) warrant upgrading to that phone. There's no reason in the world why the 4 couldn't have gotten at least the 3D flyover navigation in Maps, or even the panorama capabilities, too. Turn-by-turn, I can see...sort of. That requires voice, and Siri was never part of the 4 to begin with. Though, can Siri work on a 4?
Anyway, all of this nonsense is really making me want to switch OSes. And Lindy and Ceric are really pushing me to go Windows Phone - the Lumia 920 does look awesome. But I'm also seriously considering the Galaxy S III because, well... Android is Google, and I've really immersed myself into Google's whole schematic within the past year. So this is a tough decision for me. :P
SO. As an Apple fan, why should I stay? Why should I upgrade to an iPhone 5? I want logical reasons for doing so, because right now... Apple's iOS is looking quite bland.

iTunes and GarageBand? I can't think of any reason to stay with Apple, really.
You'd get a better experience with Android, one that is more customizable. The Google ecosystem is better than Apple's, and having Google Docs built-in for document creation is great. The only downside is that software updates are rather sporadic; Samsung devices and Google's own Nexus devices take precedence over other manufacturers. I really want to get a Google Nexus 7 tablet, but those reports of hardware defects are making me reconsider...
Windows Phone is a very smooth OS that hardly has any "crashes", and the whole interface is designed around social connectivity and cloud storage (Ex.: all your photos and videos are stored on SkyDrive). My girlfriend has a Windows Phone and loves it. No crashing apps, a smooth and fluid OS with a unique interface, native cloud storage with SkyDrive. It's a great product.

Windows Phone is nice and sleek - but you would very much in the minority if you went with Windows at this time. I don't know how much that matters, but you'd be making an investment (kind of) in a mobile OS that is constantly shrinking.
The Panorama "feature" in iOS6 is nice...but my Samsung Omnia (Windows Mobile) from almost 4 years ago did panoramic photos, and my DROID RAZR has always had this "feature" as well.

Everyone who thinks Microsoft can't turn things around with Windows Phone needs to look at the bigger picture. Windows 8 (PC) and Windows Phone 8 are coming out next month, and Microsoft is going full force with integrating the two OS's; they're bringing native cloud support via SkyDrive, with cross-compatible apps and games. Complete integration is the key here. It's like iOS and Mac OS X all over again.
And there have been plenty of instances where a product (or company) that was deemed unsaveable managed to turn around and become a success. See Apple, the PS3, and the Xbox brand, for instance.
- Apple was on the verge of death before Steve Jobs returned to head the company. When they released the iMac and iPod, the company's fortunes, marketshare, and profits improved dramatically.
- The PS3 was being shunned by developers and gamers due to it's high launch price, and it took the redesigned PS3 Slim and a new $400 price to improve its sales.
- The original Xbox was a niche console with a small, yet dedicated fanbase. Xbox Live and Halo kept it alive during it's relatively short 4 1/2 year lifespan. Luckily, Microsoft had the money to burn, and they managed to turn things around with the Xbox 360, which became the de-facto standard for console developers.

I don't think anyone here's saying Microsoft can't turn it around with Windows Phone, just that they've given no real indication that they're going to anytime soon. Just because it can happen doesn't mean it will. I also think a lot of people are upset at Microsoft's apparent strategy of crippling their desktop OS in order to support their mobile one.

See Apple, the PS3, and the Xbox brand, for instance.=
Apple is the only 1 of the 3 that reversed their fortunes without burning money. When Steve Jobs returned, he reduced Apple's product line down to 4. He saved Apple by saving money and making smart deals. If anyone is skeptical of Microsoft, it's probably because, like Sony, they've been known to try to solve problems by throwing money at it. It can work (to a certain degree), but there's no guarantee that it will.

So Apple is a lot like Nintendo in that regard. They both love saving money by cutting costs, which in turn makes them money.
Microsoft and Sony could learn from them, but both companies are too set in their ways to change, I assume.

I honestly do not believe for one second that Microsoft CAN turn it around with Windows Phone. Their market share shrinks every month, just like RIM's. They need something completely different in order to win people over (as in a completely new OS). It's not like Apple was releasing old iOS phones and then they finally released the iPhone and "got it right" and people started buying them. You have to start strong, just like iOS and Android. They both get more customers every day, while every other OS loses market share. Windows Phone has 1.3% of the market (according to Q2 2012 stats) - to put that into perspective, Windows Mobile (which has been defunct for a couple of years) has 3%.

Apple is not stopping Google from releasing iOS apps, they are just not gonna have Google Maps or YouTube pre-installed anymore (Google released a separate YouTube app last week, though they don't appear to have plans for a separate Google Maps app).
Or do they? (http://9to5mac.com/2012/09/20/google-has-an-ios-6-maps-app-awaiting-approval-it-is-solely-up-to-apple-to-approve/)

Lulz. To be at least mildly fair, it was his thread to derail.
The only legitimate reasons are your own. Deciding which OS route to go is entirely dependent on what your needs are. I could pretty much go with any of them. I just like going on the internet and they all pretty much do that well, even RIM is getting there. I don't think many people chose an iPhone for the reasons I did, but that's what made it the right choice for me.

Very true, Adrock. I suppose what I'm looking for then are valued opinions on why a person chose what he/she chose. I'm this close to going with the Galaxy S III, but now I'm hearing that a new Nexus phone may be coming shortly.
Also, Lindy and Ceric are really pushing WP8. And it looks very enticing. Ahhhh... I'm undecided!

I'm sticking with Apple because I'm lazy. Keeping my music in the iCloud is easier than moving it to Google. More customization in Android is nice, but I wouldn't spend enough time fiddling with it to make use of it. I've never seen anyone use NFC features from a phone in real life, so that means nothing to me.
Hope that helps.

You can get most of the customization of Android in iOS via jailbreak, which I highly recommend. It'd be hard to go back to not having some of the Cydia tweaks I've got installed.

Yeah I don't give a **** about hacking. Nintendo, Apple, Microsoft, Sony, are all against it. If you guys want to "stick it to the big bad corporations" then go ahead. Sure customization is nice, but that's what Android is for. No need to tweak your devices just to get features that will come in an official update later on.
You guys have unofficially gotten stuff earlier that Apple recently added in iOS6, but what's wrong with being patient and waiting for an official update?

For the record, I have never used my iPhone jailbreak for piracy or anything illegal. I just like some of the tweaks that you can do that way. I don't see why I should wait for an official update that may never come to get some simple improvements that aren't hurting anyone.

I may consider getting Cydia, one of the appealing features I have read is the ability to get rid of the annoying "Other" space taking up precious space on my iPod Touch (currently it fills 820 MB, i've had it up to 1.5GB).

Title: Re: Calling all Apple fans! (iPod, iPhone, iPad, Mac, etc.)

Apparently some kind of system process. However, I have the 8GB iTouch (which is actually only around 6.4, ugh) and all that Other space really ticks me off. Plus, even after I reset my iTouch, the battery life is still absolute crap. No way to replace it either, since jailbreaking void the warranty.
Oh well, time to save up for an iTouch 5G?

If you wipe the device and restore it from a backup there's no trace of the jailbreak, so while they say it voids your warranty there's really no way for them to know it was jailbroken if you did that. I got a warranty repair on my iPhone that was jailbroken right up until I sent it in. They even tell you to erase the device before you send it in.
Title: Re: Calling all Apple fans! (iPod, iPhone, iPad, Mac, etc.)
Post by: TJ Spyke on September 28, 2012, 12:48:41 AM
It's basically cache from doing stuff. That space is also stuff like your Safari browsing history, Notes, email downloaded to your iOS device, etc. You can take care of stuff like your browsing history, but it barely makes a dent in the Other section. From a search online, the only way to erase it (other than jailbreaking) is to basically reset your iOS device (essentially restoring it to the state it was when you bought it). You can put your apps back on of course, but you will lose all that data.

Well, I think the battery problems have been alleviated ever since I did a full restore without backing it up, but I still get an issue every once in a while. Is there any way for me to cheat the system to a get a new one? I have about 50 days left on my hardware warranty.

The iTouch 5G looks like a huge imrovement over the older versions. They finally added a decent camera, LED flash, and a new case design (that unibody aluminum looks very sleek).
I don't care about hacking or jailbreaking. I actually don't mind waiting for official updates from Apple/Microsoft/Nintendo/Sony/whoever, because unlike many people, I have patience (not directing this at anyone here, just people in general).
And I hate how Apple lies about their battery life. The battery dies pretty quickly even when watching a video (podcast). 10 hour battery life my ass.

Got to play with Apple's newest tech from the last year. My impressions of each:
iPad 3 - Pretty lame, actually. I've always thought this. I mean, what's the niche of tablets? Word processors? You have laptops for that. Web browsing? Your phone or media device. Movie player? Meh. Not have a 16:9 screen really kills that experience for me. There's nothing on the iPad 3 that I can't do just as well if not better on other devices.
iPod Touch 5G - Pretty damn slick. Putting my 4G and the 5G together, you can tell there's been a huge improvement over the last two years. It has all these little things the 4G should have come with, but didn't, and I really want to upgrade, if only so I can get more than just 8GB of storage. Plus, having Siri is a big plus too.
iPhone 5 - Really digging the screen. Feels natural as the previous iPhone screens, but better in every way. Watching their test movie was much more enjoyable of the iPhone 5. The camera is freaking brilliant.
iPod Nano - Piece of ****. I have no idea why anyone would buy this. Especially without a retina display.
And **** all the Siri haters. I gave it ten different commands, while being in an extremely loud Apple Store in the biggest mall in Washington State and not talking very loudly, and it heard me perfectly and did exactly what I wanted. The hatred and parody of Siri is unwarranted, in my opinion.

The point of the iPad (and all tablets) is to be a portable media consumption device. They also play games much better than the small-screened smartphones and iPod Touch's.
Plus, if you look at the Kindle Fire as an example, tablets are great for eBook reading. Browsing the web on a smartphone is rather mundane, simply because the screen is so small.
Title: Re: Calling all Apple fans! (iPod, iPhone, iPad, Mac, etc.)
Post by: Shaymin on October 22, 2012, 07:32:28 AM
But the main niche for the nano is music and mostly working out which they fucked upwith a touchscreen. Having retina display on such a small screen makes no sense. Its not like your going to be doing any reading or something that takes advantge of the retina like font.
At that point your adding more cost to what is supposed to be a mid-range device when you should just grab a ipod touch or an iphone.
If anything were to be added to the nano than it would have to be icloud/itunes support.

iPods are getting more and more pointless. If you don't have a smart phone (or a phone), then sure, go for it. If you do have a smart phone, chances are it can do everything that an iPod can do, has a bigger screen, and probably has removable storage. However, I make a lot of money by fixing broken iPod Touches, so by all means, keep buying them.

I like the new iMac, but I have to wait for next year's model since I only budgeted for Wii U and I haven't saved enough points on my credit card to make buying a new computer not a financial burden. Maybe Apple will put a Retina Display on next year's iMac.
If I were to get an iPad, the mini is the one I'd want. It's the right size for when I'm laying in bed watching Louis CK clips on YouTube. $329 is too much for my limited budget, especially for something strictly for recreation. $250 would have been a lot harder to pass up, but I don't expect that to ever be a reality.

using other 7 inch tablets I find the ipad mini to look weird. It really brings home the whole giant ipod more sothan the regular ipad. I'm also suprised apple went ahead with the ipad 4 so early. That's where subsidized cell-phone contracts come in. But I see your point. I have an iPod Touch because I don't want to be stuck with an expensive data plan that has limited data caps. That's why I use Boost Mobile for my phone, and I have an iPod Touch for my apps.
But the huge popularity of tablets may make the iPod Touch obsolete. Apple is trying to hold onto the iPod brand because they know it still makes them money. But I still think the 7-inch tablets are going to eventually kill the iPod market (along with the Samsung Galaxy Player). Especially since the newest iPod Touch costs $299, yet you can get a similarly priced iPad Mini for only $30 more (The Kindle Fire and Nexus 7 are cheaper than that, despite having more advanced hardware and bigger screens).

There is no distinction. Apps can have a single installer that contains all the necessary files/UI adjustments depending on the device it sits on.
For example, in the store for Evernote it says "this app is compatible with iPhone and iPad". The same file is downloaded from the server, there is no specific version unless the developer has actually split them for a particular reason. If it's compatible with iPhone it is compatible with iPod too. Nearly all iPhone apps are compatible with iPod except for those that need voice features.

Why do you hate Macs? I've never really understood that line of thinking, since even right now after making real gains over the last few years they've only got about 10% of the market, so it's not like they're destroying any other options. I can see not being a fan of the OS personally, or not liking some of the drawbacks of the platform, but far too many people actively hate them for no real reason.

I am torn when it comes to Apple, I love the iPod classic, I have a brand new 180 GB model I got less than a year ago. I also just got an iphone for my 30th birthday which was a major upgrade to my previous outdated flip phone I had since 2006. But I hate everything they make that has the name Mac in it.

I find that it is mostly a dislike of the OS and the hardware Design choices over the years. Which is most of the Mac package.
*Shrug*
Personally not a really a fan of the Apple Desktop UI philosophy (I'm extending this to even Pre-OSX). I'm not really talking about the look portion much either. Its designed by and for a different mindset then what I have. Which is fine. Its much the same reason I can't get into Quicken or Complex Excel Spreadsheets.

The iPad mini is the first time since Jobs built the iPod that Apple has been "forced" into a market. It says and does everything Apple shouldn't say and shouldn't do.
Jobs would be pissed.
Now where is my iPocket Watch.

I fucking hate apple, their retarded legal spat with Samsung has forced me to put off the Wii U to get the Samsung bptivate glide (before a sales ban is implemented because apple is too busy throwing a temper tantrum in the courtroom to make a better product. I likely wont be able to get a wii u untill mid next year at least. The wii u was to be my first console bought at launch.

For me it is about options for one, Mac's are just not that customizable and they cost way too much for what you get. But really it was when I started going to school that I developed a hatred for them. I started out in Broadcasting and everything we did was on a Mac. They drive me crazy I can't stand them. I don't really care for the iPod line or iPad line much either to be honest. What I love about my iPod classic is it's basically the same as the first one I bought in 2004 only progressively better, I don't like change for the sake of it and sometimes simplifying things only complicates them.
I have nothing against AT&T when I lived in Nevada, but when I moved to Nebraska where they don't have service all of a sudden they started treating me like a criminal.

I really don't understand where all these people are coming from arguing that Macs aren't customizable. I've tweaked so many things about mine that it's pretty jarring to use anyone else's Mac.

I'm hooked on Letterpress and looking for more people to play. Anyone with an iOS device should at least try this game, and if you do, add me on GameCenter. I'm insanolord on there too, of course.

So... I'm in the market to buy an iPad Mini. This is going to be my personal test/development/I'mprobablygoingtobreakthisdevice. Thankfully, I have a company perk where I can get 90% of the purchase price reimbursed.
But... I've never really bought one of these iOS devices before. Where do I go to buy one? Online? Big Box Retailer? Apple themselves? Are iPad Minis sold out or something? Will I have to wait a long time?

Your best bet is probably to go to one of Apple's own retail stores if you've got one by you.

Too bad that is not an option for most people, I know the closest one to me is an hour drive. If you don't mind paying full price and waiting, you can order it from Apple's site since they offer free engraving. Otherwise, I recommend going to Best Buy if you have a Reward Zone card.

Yeah, the closest one to me's like an hour and a half away, but I'm pretty sure Carmine's in the San Francisco area, where I'm sure he has several options.

Is it just me or is it really hard to find an iPod Touch 5G retail without having to go to an Apple Store?
