I agree, I believe a modern 2.5 d mario game would be much more fun than the 3d ones

How about Mario and Luigi? Though it's not really a classic platformer, it has plenty of platformer elements plus I hear it's pretty cool.
As for a new Mario adventure, heh, I'll just say that they are gonna run out of things to port sometime

Yes! I want a sidescrolling mario! And in the style of the first NES game! I hope N grants our wishes... Hell, a new Super Mario Bros probably wouldn't take that long to do, after all it's much less complicated than a full 3d title.

I agree, 3d mario just ain't the same. I hope they do make that game but nintendo seems to do the opposite of what I want them to do lately.

I'd like to see another side scrolling Mario game but I don't want it to be "2.5D" with polygons. If they're going to make it sidescrolling then do it right and make it 2D with sprites. That way they can make it on the GBA and the next 3D Mario can be on the Gamecube thus giving us the best of both worlds.
Mario in 3D is generally fine. What they have to do though is make the next 3D Mario game more action based with smaller levels that revolve around the idea of making it from the beginning of the level to the end instead of all this "collect useless crap" stuff.

I want them to bring back wart and maybe have him launch an attack against bowser something like happened in The orginal RPG. I love playing as bowser.

My issue with the 3-D Mario games is that they've taken all the "arcade action" out of the franchise. The old Mario games used to be about precision jumping, eye-hand coordination and reflexes. Now they're puzzle-solving games. It's not the same...they aren't TRUE Mario sequels. As far as I'm concerned the last real "Mario" game was Yoshi's Island on the SNES.

I think a game that had a hundred or so of the "special" levels from SMS would be awesome. Trying to pull off crazy wall jumps with nothing beneith you gets me excited.

Hmm...I could see this happening on GBA.
As for 3D Marios...only two true 3D Mario games have been released. One of them has been hailed by many as one of the best games ever. The other...did not live up to expectations. Wait for Mario 128...let's see what direction Nintendo is taking the series in before you truly start complaining about the 3D Marios. Most of you had to admit, Mario 64 is a damn great game. And I'm happy to admit Mario 64 is my favorite game of all time.

Yeah, those levels were mega fun in SMS. MEGA I say! A whole disc of them would be nice =D

I still haven't beaten some of the SMS bonus levels (too busy w/ school and WW) but they are awesome. A disk with those...and throw in random items, like some could have the water hose, others could have the racoon suit, others give you a super mushroom, the cape, a fire flower, or a starman. they chuck you into a SMS bonus style level and give you an item of some kind from the mario series and say "get from point A to point B with only this". That could hold some potential.

Mario 64 does rule - can't dispute that. Problem is, it's so good that they pretty much killed the concept to the point that any sequel is fairly redundant and derivative.

is sms like sm64? cuz i hated sm64 and if its the same i'd probably hate sms. All i want is for super mario games to be more challenging like how they were in the smbworld and more linear. I hate all that freedom that they give you. thats why 2d would rock.

SMS gave you quite a bit of freedom, much like Mario 64. SMS was quite similar to Mario 64, but definatly harder in my book. The game was good, but I never ended up finishing it, got 59 shines or something.
A 2d Mario would be great, those levels were fun, but it would need to come with a stress ball...they were very frustrating. Always gave you a life too, so you had no reason to quit. Evil Nintendo.

The collecting of shines/stars and what not needs to go. Nintendo should go back to its old roots and release Super Mario World 4. It should be the most realistic Mario game ever released. It should have multiplayer features (no gba crap) Yoshi should be in the game, the Fire Plant, Cape, Racoon Suit, Frog Suit, Hammer Bros suit should all come back. Wario should be in the game but be on Bowser's side, and when you beat the game you can play through with Wario. Waluigi is a joke, dont add him. The Koopa Kids should come back, Mario and Luigi would each have different skills. Mario would jump higher but run slow, and have more powerful attacks. Luigi would jump lower, but longer, and have faster more agile attacks. This would put Nintendo right back up there where it belongs.

Yeah, I was thinking, it'd be crazy if they made something with the secret levels of Sunshine, but let you play it multiplayer, where you had to race to get to the end of the world or something. And putting back in the ol' Tanooki Suit/Fireballs/Etc. so it was a bit of a battle. Something like that would go over well I think, and it'd be kinda fresh and new.

I'd like a new 2D Mario game, but I personally prefer 3D. There's simply nothing that can beat just running around Delphino Isle's main city and jumping on roof tops and pulling crazy backflips and triple jumps everywhere, not to mention the awe-inspiringly fun wall-jumping.
I'd love a game of just those kind of levels from SMS. Those were great. Just as long as the included a TON of them. And how about a level editor? Those were simple enough for one.

I'd prefer 2d. There are things that simply can't be pulled off in 3d. While on this, what about a Giana Sisters remake?

A different type of 3-D Mario, we've only seen Nintendo use the 'collect stars/shines from a few levels' forumla yet, I'm sure something a little more similar to the extra levels in Sunshine would be pretty cool.

"All i want is for super mario games to be more challenging like how they were in the smbworld and more linear. I hate all that freedom that they give you "
Most people who hated Mario 64 for that reason seemed to like Mario Sunshine a lot better. The game is far more linear. There are even arrows that guide you along each mission and, at the start of the stage, it shows you exactly where you need to go. The greatest part of the game is the "secret levels", though, most of which are entirely linear. Best of all, the red coins aren't annoyingly scattered everywhere like in Mario 64. They're usually in one distinct section of the levels. The game is definitly more challenging too.
I am hoping the next Mario game will be a side-scroller though. I think it should be cel-shaded to capture the look of the NES/SNES games but also allow amazing 3D effects.

The exploration aspect in Sunshine was great...but from what Miyamoto has been saying, looks like we'll be seeing a 2D Mario soon.

Realism is not something often associated with Mario. And I hope you know the fire plant, cape, raccoon suit, frog suit, and the Hammer bros. suit have unrealistic effects. No one can just put on a cape and fly after a running start.

For sure this would be awsome, if it was in SUPER High res 2d. Would it sell ? yes and no...some losers would probably say oh it sucks cause its not 3d and nintendo would probably not make another game like it.
But it would be awsome none the less.
Well, at least we get mario 3 redone and M&L soon.

By Realistic I mean realistic graphics. I know for a fact SMS did not use the GameCube's power to the fullest, I want the next Super Mario Bros game to have the most realistic graphics the cube can handle. And the idea of all those power ups I think is cool, the water pack thing was so stupid, things like that dont belong in a Mario game. I mean, mushroom, leaf, waterpack?

Remember the 3D renders of Mario that Nintendo used (and still uses) for the concept art in SM64 and SMS? The visuals should be like that in the next 3-D Mario game. Realistic to a degree, but with a soft, cartoony feeling to it, all very smooth, polished, and easy on the eyes --- just the right balance of realism and cartooniness. To name a few effects that I think should be included, I'd like to see the water and heat effects from SMS kept, as well as the morphing, cel-shaded clouds in the sky from Wind Waker. All in all such an approach would combine to make a very visually pleasing game.
As for the game, I think each world should consist of a huge, wide open central region with plenty of nooks and crannies to explore and things to do, but with paths branching out from around it, paths that seamlessly lead into more linear obstacle courses and such (like SMS's Warp Stages) where the real meat of the game would be.
For instance, imagine Mario hopping out of a Warp Pipe and landing knee-deep in snow on a windswept valley swirling with ice and snow. You flip to first person perspective and examine the area. Behind you is a skyscraping mountain rising straight up from the valley floor, and you can see hundreds of slippery ledges that you could clamber up to reach the distant top. You run, hop, skip, jump, and flip your way to the mountain and begin the perilous journey up, warding off assaults from airborne enemies as you tread carefully across icy ledges and skillfully jump to and fro. Then, when you finally reach the summit, from which you see the entire valley, with its snowy forests, sparkling caves, and misty lakes, you are faced with very linear obstacle course filled with all sorts of insane platforming challenges, just like the Warp Zones in SMS. And at the end is your Star.
In my opinion, it's the best of both worlds, and should suit Mario fine, with the right curve of difficulty and implementation. And yes, the game should be seasoned well with TONS of nostalgic touches, with everything from the Super Mushroom and Fire Flower to the Tanooki Suit and Hammer Bros. Suit, from the Koopa Kids to Wario and Wart, from worlds of fire and ice to climatic battles aboard airships, everything, all brought to new life on next generation hardware.
Now THAT would be quite something!

"By Realistic I mean realistic graphics. I know for a fact SMS did not use the GameCube's power to the fullest, I want the next Super Mario Bros game to have the most realistic graphics the cube can handle."
So you want Mario to look like an actor in a suit? What you mean, I think, is you want GOOD graphics- Mario has always had a very cartoony look to him and making him look like a real person would completely screw the whole style of the game. I agree SMS didn't use the Cube's power to the fullest, but lots of polys doesn't equal realism- realism is an artistic style and Mario does not fit in that style. The next Mario game should have incredible graphics while still retaining the fun graphical style of SMS.

The next Mario game should decide whether it wants to be linear or non-linear, and go all the way with that. SMS had fairly large levels, but on any given task you only needed a small part of it. I like being able to explore around and get Shines. I'd love a Mario game with one Zelda-style continuous world, but in the Mario style - tons of action-based objectives, but lots of exploring as well. If not that, though, I want a totally linear game in old-school style. That would be awesome as well.

I certainly hope you're not talking about making Mario looking something akin to Resident Evil 4. I agree with Vanilla Thunder though. That concept art looked rather sweet. A cartoony touch with them would compliment the Mario world nicely.

Are you both idiots? Or just acting dumb? Seriously you know what I mean, but if I have break it down into easier terms I guess I will. By REALISTIC GRAPHICS I mean I want Mario to look as best as the GameCube can handle. Not realistic like a person, as realistic as he can be in the Mario world. As good looking as a Mario game can get, they way Mario looked in SMS was nothing compared to what he can look like. Do you understand now? Or must I keep explaining?

The problem is you're acting like "realistic" graphics are synonymous with "good" graphics. That's not always the case. Take Wind Waker for instance. Toon-shading is a difficult effect to pull off and actually requires more effort from the hardware than "normal" realistic graphics. Wind Waker isn't realistic at all but it is still one of the most graphically impressive games ever and made great use of the Gamecube's hardware. Nintendo could take FULL advantage of the Gamecube's power for the next Mario game and have it end up looking less realistic than SMS.

Do you know what realistic graphics are? They are not the same as good graphics. If you want realistic graphics, go check out Resident Evil 4. If you want good graphics, go check out The Wind Waker.
